Making Fry Bread (How we were taught)

This we how we make our fry bread. A very simple recipe. Remember everyone makes their fry bread different and each fry bread is unique. :-) Our recipe doesn't use measuring utensils but more so "hand memory" lol so bear with us.
If you want a recipe using measurements, here's one you can use from Indian Country Today:
Traditional (Old Fashioned) Indian Frybread
Makes 16 frybreads
4 cups all-purpose white flour
2 tablespoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups warm water
About 2-½ cups vegetable oil or shortening for frying
In a large bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually stir in the water until dough becomes soft and workable without sticking to the bowl. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface 5 minutes. Return dough to bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let rest 30 minutes to allow it to rise.
Shape dough into 16 evenly-shaped balls. Place a piece of the dough between your hands and pat it from hand to hand as you would pizza dough, or roll out to ½-inch thickness on a lightly floured board. (For crispier bread, roll dough to ¼-inch thickness.) Pat or roll the dough until it stretches to about 10-12 inches in diameter. Repeat with the rest of the dough.
Cut or poke a small hole in the center of each piece to prevent breads from bursting during frying.
Pour about 1-½ inches of oil into a large frying pan and heat over medium heat until the oil shimmers-hot but not smoking.
Carefully place a dough round into the hot oil, taking care not to let the hot oil splash. Cook until dough turns golden brown and puffs, about 1 to 2 minutes. Turn over with a fork and cook until both sides are golden brown.
Remove and drain on paper towels or a brown paper bag until excess oil is absorbed. Repeat the process with each piece of dough. Keep warm between two clean kitchen towels in the oven set on low or warm.
Serve immediately.

You bring me back to my childhood 55 years ago when Paul & Robert Kellwood and I would go see his Aunt Connie and Uncle Roy in Window Rock, we ate fry bread until all of the 10 pounds of flour was gone... This is a great memory for us, and you two have revived it so sweetly by making it the same way as his Aunt Connie does. Man-o-man going to have to make myself some fry bread and share it with the spirit of Paul and Uncle Roy.

My grandmother taught me to cook and I use the same measuring system. Grandma was part native American but I know others whose families can from Europe who use the same system. Things to use for measuring were in short supply and took more work to clean. This works and people who don't like to see it can just watch something else and miss the joy of watching the two of you.

Yep! That's the same recipe. That my late grandma from New Mexico. Used flour, salt and baking soda. And also, many Navajos from the New Mexico areas. Relatives on my dad's side of the family. My mom also learned to make frybread from my late grandma Virginia Begay. And when you first start to make frybread. It always comes out hard as a rock. And so, just practicing and practicing. And you'll get better at it. Where it would come out just right.

👍To each his or her own. I'm a Navajo guy. I learned from my mom. but I use oil instead of salt. at first my doughs were hard but my mom told me after awhile if you keep making it. you'll get the feel for it and now my doughs turn out soft. portioning them out I have my hits and misses meaning some are a lil bigger or smaller than others. but my mom always gets it right the first time. I learned it because my mom has arthritis and I use to ask my aunt also but my aunt moved to another town so that's when I was determined to learn it. I may not make the right size dough at times or portions. But!! at least I get the dough nice and soft.👍...The cool thing is anytime I'm craving hot bread. . Now I know how to make it.😁

That’s absolutely beautiful amazing. My dad died a few weeks ago but every year for the last 10 or so years they used to take their RV they got invited to camp on a reservation for two weeks out of the year. And most people didn’t get invited like that. They went back every year. They talked about this bread! On the reservation where they were they made this bread on a rock outside! I think that’s the coolest thing my parents have ever done actually they did a lot of cool things but this is definitely one of the highlights!
