I really appreciate that you posted that. Very informative, especially the part about using kitty litter for the clay. Thanks.

I love the video..Having around casting and pattern making most of my life It sure is nice to see this reverting to the home shop.. One thing I always tell someone that is just starting is although there is a lot to know to do it efficiently and with good quality, one must also remember that casting has been around for thousands of years.. If they can do it you can too.. You can get as involved as you want with what you have at hand and it's just fine..

Nice work. Most people would not think that casting with molten metal would involve such delicate skills.

I am about to make some green sand myself and i am glad that i don't have to burn out second hand store blenders to make the bentonite clay by following your method and my initial hunch of just using water to break it down

It takes some work.. And it might pay to make it even wetter than I did, and work it as it dries out

Thanks for your video, I've not done any casting but was wondering if the "blowout" I think you called it in your casting, might have been caused by excess talcum powder that you left in the lower half of your mold. You brushed the face where the two halves join, but left what looked like a considerable amount in the mold cavity when you placed the upper half on to the lower half.

Now when you use the kitty litter do you also have to sift through the cat litter and separated from the clay before you mix it to the sand or no?

Maybe there was to mush baby powder in the corners when you made the mold. I seen it and was thinking you was going to blow it out from the corners. It looked a bit to much and Im guessing thats what your seeing at the end of the video. Just my 2 cents

Enjoyed the video. Now, I admit that I am absolutely clueless about casting, and in fact your two videos are the only ones I've seen. But, I would like to know why you do not make the gutters for the liquid on the top half, rather than the bottom half? To me it appears that if you make the gutter on the top half, the gravity and natural flow of the liquid would help it to spread more evenly throughout the mold. Thanks!

do you have any clue if a bag of "sandy loam" will work from bunnings? i was going to try but my local bunnings didnt stock it

Tom Peterson no that just sandy dirt.. You want the finest sand you can get. At the very least you can go too where they have the cement in Bunnings and get brickies sand, but you'll get a crap surface finish

You actually keep the sand a bit damp (3-6% depending on the metal type), because the vapour will make the surface smooth.
@HomeDistiller

I'm hoping the bag of chemical spill absorber in bought at Walmart will work. it's made of benzene clay. also for a large volume of good clean, very Fine sand I bought sand used for sand blasting at Harbor Freight . will save some time because I won't need to sift it

Darrin Taylor that clay might be better with oil rather than water.. have a look on the label, if it's made for oil clean up it might be worth testing a small amount

Hello, I am also Australian! I love how familiar everything in your Video feels. I've had a hard time finding all the correct things while pursuing my interest in metal work. I was wondering about the ratio of Sand/Clay, the only sand I have found is 20KG Bags of Play Sand from Bunnings. I was wondering how many kg of Clay I should mix with 20kg of Sand. I'll also be using the exact clay you have, surprisingly easy to get. ^_^

The reason the chuck is crap is --- on the side of your drill it says RYOBI. I've had Millwaukee and Bosch drills with keyless chucks and they [the chucks] worked just as well as any keyed chuck I've ever used. I also had a Ryobi drill [18 volt] which wasn't worth squat. All aspect of that piece of junk were next to useless.

Try DE Walt or Hilti drills. You can not go wrong with either of these drill especially the Hilti. But don't go to your local hardware and expect to buy either for the price of a Ryobi. It isn't going to happen.

yeah or a makita drill i know they are all great drills.. but i would have expected atleast a useable product from ryobi.. and i just dont get the use to spend the cash on a $300 drill

HomeDistiller If it makes you feel better, I've bought DeWalts and Ridgids with crappy chucks. I think your right, the truth is that a keyed chuck is the only bulletproof tech but people like me are always loosing the stoopid chuck key. Also, that greedy scumbags that make drills make 50 different sizes of chuck. And they want 10 bucks for a chuck key.

Nicely done there, couple of points I’d like to share, with the holes in your complete work am I correct in that you haven’t used a degasser addictive to your molten mix? You can use soda crystals from the kitchen cleaning isle in your local supermarket, check it is made from sodium carbonate, wrap up a level tablespoon into the aluminium foil. Pop it in when up to temperature and keep the packet/foil wrap submerged as deep as possible, once the bubbling has stopped, Second best bit. Of advice is look at Myfordboy on KZfaq, there’s people that are good and then there are the exception to them, this guy surpasses most others, he makes small alloy castings for his model steam engines etc. He’s very good at the process and has a blog at. Myfordboy.blogspot.com. Has loads of great information about casting etc anyway good luck with your future projects....Phil o
@HomeDistiller
@HomeDistiller 5 жыл бұрын
I do degas, and I also have been watching myfordboy for many years.. I have found however that sodium carbonate doesn't work well for degassing (much the same as the KZfaqr luckygen).. I've found that chlorine tablets that's used for pools is much much more effective although much much more dangerous.. Thanks for the comment and suggestions
