You have to mix your Potassium Nitrate with Magnesium Powder in 50/50 and light this. It is Flash Powder and better than Blackpowder. Try some experiments with this. Pls like that he sees it :)

Grant, a typical mix for green sand is 93-94% sand and 6-7% bentonite clay. You will want to do a couple of things. After mixing your dry components together slowly add water until the sand is moist but not sticking badly to your hands. Let this sit a while to actually hydrate the clay. The next step is to mull the sand. To mull you want a squishing sliding motion. The idea is to coat the sand with the clay you have mixed in. To test the green sand, take a handful and squeeze it into a sausage. It shouldn't stick to your hands much. Then break the sausage in half. It should break clean and not crumble. If it crumbles then you do not have enough water in it. If the sand sticks to your hand and the sausage does not break cleanly then you need more clay. Keep in mind you only want enough clay to coat the sand. Any more, may give you slightly more green strength, but you lose porosity which will affect your casting. I hope you find that helpful. Joe

The sand I have used for years is graded washed quarry sand. The powdered bentonite is ready to use from clay pottery supply shops and I use a mini mix cement mixer to do all the mixing. Dry mix sand & bentonite first then add water till it holds. Try not to use too much water or you will have steam pockets blowing through the casting. Degassing tablets & flux really make a final quality difference. Make sure you vent the sand mould thoroughly to allow the steam out.

Some things that I would like to add. Green sand is only used for 'soft' metals like aluminum. It will not work with casting steel. You need oil sand for that. Also, when storing it, it doesn't hurt to mist a little more water on top. Especially if you live in a hot and dry area

Another option is to use a ball mill to crush the granular materials down to almost whatever size is required. The draw back is that it is noisy and takes a long time to crush the materials down the the grade needed, but the plus side is this would allow you to use more of the granular materials purchased as well as allowing you to create a finer powder then you could get from sifting. From here you could test just how fine a powder could be used for metal casting purposes or other experiments. This is my first comment so I gotta add that I love the content your posting. Thanks for keeping experimentation fun and accessible. :)

The fun part of this video is that in real life I am a soil lab technician so that whole mixing the sand and water is what we do at my work, it's called the optimum moisture content, and it's the point where the sample has got water in it but isn't overmoist, and you use that water content to figure out how much you can compact the soil. It's what happens when you build anything so that the builders know you are compacting the ground enough so it doesn't suddenly sink a new building from the weight on top.`

Hey Grant - the recipe I was taught (once and long ago) involved motor oil where you are using water. Something about steam really fouling up the casting. FYI. Thanks for the video!
@sam111880
@sam111880 5 жыл бұрын
I agree its the grain size that matters and all soil mixtures contain different ratio's of sand , silt , and clay so its figuring out the best ratio for sand casting. Powder clay itself i say is the best for compacted your mold in it would almost make it harden a little into modeling clay if sprayed with water a little. Then you demold the item and cast into it with vent and pour holes drawn in the clay. The clay is like an earthware ceramic so should hold form when metal is poured in. Heck it might even create a ceramic outer shell in sand .

Hey Grant, you should've just automized the sifting process by connecting the big and small mesh using paper (like a funnel), then you can connect this system to a vibrator and voila: automatic sand sifting machine. All you need to do is keep adding the sand to the top part of the funnel with the larger mesh and get the fine grain on the other end. Cheers!

I've seen other KZfaqrs use sodium silicate as a binder instead of clay and water. It's a little harder to work with because it has a limited work time but it makes much higher quality molds. You can make sodium silicate by dissolving silica beads in lye, or buy it by the gallon as concrete sealer.

I think you can use bentonite clay powder instead of kitty litter from the garden supplies store , it is added to soil to control moisture and nutrients cause it acts very much like a sponge and it is already a fine powder .

I quick tip for getting fine sand on a budget: bake it in the oven a few times, the heat change cracks the sand. Parents used the method to turn regular play sand into a fine sandblasting sand (they were sandblasting a car)

another one you could try is fine sand and "liquid glass" sodium silicate, it hardens to rock after being left in air and can be used multiple times to cast if you are careful

Grant, an alternative to bentonite kitty litter is diatomaceous earth. It's extremely fine bentonite/potters clay powder and can be purchased at any agricultural store and many pet shops. Even Walmart.

You could go to a winery or a wine retailer. They use a very fine bentonite clay to refine wine. When it comes to sand, some crafting stores sell an ultra fine sand for sand murals. Since the sand must be very fine to do that.

A local sand and gravel supplier would have a variety of screened sand products in specific mesh values. You can get the exact consistency you want and it will typically be cheaper than aquarium sand.
