Finally giving a wrap up to this year's hay season! We had much more hay growth and only had to buy one load of four large bales of alfalfa this year.
We had a neighbor bale the grass, but used our John Deere Hayloader to put up our alfalfa and sainfoin loose.
Some of the videos uploaded in black and white for some reason...no need to adjust your screen!

Clover Mountain Dairy is a small Organic Jersey farm in Washington state located near Chewelah and about an hour north of Spokane.

I did a squares back in my younger days, but I missed out on putting loose hay in the barn. I did feed some though. You got some good feed there. Your cattle will enjoy that this winter. Thanks for the journey.

Hayyyyyyy! I would have “baled” early becuase it is such hard work but you stuck with it. Your work ethic is beyond impressive. I bet you “hit the hay” early after all that physical labor. Love all your videos!

Loose hay, that’s how we did it back in the 50’s. I think it was better quality than bales. We actually mowed it away in our barn, thin layers so it didn’t heat. Thanks for sharing.

For the alfalfa I think loose is better than baled. It’s gentler and there is less leaf shatter. In the past, when rain has threatened, we’ve finished drying in the barn. Thanks for watching!

Hello Virginia & Stacey - Maybe post in black and white again. The part with the hay entering the barn was quite cinematic, like a scene from the ‘Wizard of Oz’. If only we could also smell all that fresh cut hay! Happy cows and horses this winter 💚🐄 Cheers

Have you considered adding a motor to your loose hay unloading operation? If you used a motorized pulley system to lift the hay off the wagon, you wouldn't need a second person on the tractor to unload.

This brings memories back. Cut many acres of hay with a Cub just like yours. Mostly square bales but also loose, using a loader. Looks like very good hay, well cured and few weeds. Approved by three out of three taste-testing cows. Thomerosa Farm seems to be shipshape for the seasons ahead.

Nice looking hay this year! Question for Virginia, how do you know when to stop backing up the cub since I'm guessing you can't see the trolley once it enters the barn?
@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 Жыл бұрын
Good question! Stacy uses hand signals, and I can see him tense his shoulder before pulling on the release line. And it is about the same distance each time unless shifting from dropping right inside the barn to dropping deep inside the barn. Thanks 😊

Great to have plenty of feed for the livestock. Stacy could you attach your loose hay pulling rope to an electric winch?
@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 Жыл бұрын
An electric winch would definitely work… but then I’d have to buy an electric winch! Actually, the old hay tool companies used to sell electric winches just for this purpose! Most folks just used a horse or tractor though…

Why do the alfalfa loose? It was a good touch to show the trolley footage in black and white!
@vnthomas16

With legumes, you can put them up a percentage of two higher loose and avoid any leaf shatter. Really high quality.

@vnthomas16

On our alfalfa/Lucerne we get at least 2 cuttings of hay, and then graze off the third. On our grass, we get one cutting, and can usually graze it once after that. Just made our first Gouda of the season yesterday!

I have wat he'd most of your videos over the years but have a question.. If you have access to a bailer, why do you still store loose hay? Is a bailer in the future plans? Also curious what a large bail of hay goes for in your area? Thanks!
@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 Жыл бұрын
We bale the grass hay. Our legume fields we have been putting up loose. The quality is a little better as putting up loose hay is gentler, thus we have less leaf shatter. If we ever get a baler, it will be a round baler. The large bales are certified organic, 5th cutting, dairy quality alfalfa. We got the forage test and the stuff is like rocket fuel… we paid $400/ton.
