Making some peanut butter that is healthy, fast and easy with our food mill. We use unsalted peanuts that are dry roasted for this. It allows you to have the nuts in storage for later use to make fresh peanut butter whenever you want. We also use the food mill for fresh ground flour and cornmeal. Having the dry stored goods gives you comfort knowing you have means of making your own food(s).

That is something I have always wanted to try. I have seen you can do it in a blender too but not sure how smooth it will turn out. I would love to get a food mill too, I just need a place to set it up so I can use it.

Hello Tom:. My GrainMaker arrived. That thing's a BEAST! It mills the flour perfectly in one pass. Outstanding! The table clamp seems to be working fine, although I had to add a shim as my kitchen counter isn't thick enough. I'm thinking of mounting it on cutting board so I can move it around, and better position the handle so I don't have to stand awkwardly to operate it. Going to the grocery store to buy peanuts, popcorn, and eggs. Will try my hand at milling semolina flour from durum to make pasta for dinner. Later will cornmeal to make corn bread. The GeainMaker is unstoppable!

@@OutdoorsandCountryLiving I have the popcorn and peanuts ready to grind tomorrow. I will also return to making the perfect loaf of whole-wheat bread. This is a great and grand prep for myself. Besides canning food into Mason jars, a next step includes milling my own flour to bake my bread in a Kitchen Queen wood stove. We're talking "hard core" self- Sufficiency. As the "son of an engineer," I'm applying my skills to that objective. I can't wait!

Bill Laut awesome!! Lol. What are you doing with the popcorn? We use dent corn for our cornmeal. I’ve never ground popcorn. Lol Wood stove cooking will be good. We grew up with a wood stove and cooked many meals on it. We used to wrap potatoes in foil and put in the stove along the side with hot coals. I’m doing some research on some solar solutions for some projects I’m thinking about. It’s always fun stuff. :) shoot some footage of that bad boy doing work and share. I enjoy sharing experiences and knowledge. It’s good stuff. I’m excited to see what you make. - Tom

@@OutdoorsandCountryLiving I'm not yet set up for making videos. I have two or three 30-second demonstrations of psychokinesis, but anything more elaborate has to wait until I buy a GoPro camera and add editing software. Milling semolina is easy. Because durum is one of the hardest grains, you set the burrs for a somewhat finer grain. When it is milled correctly, the flour has a light yellow color. If it's too coarse, it will have a darker color. I suggest buying a bag of Bob's Red Mill Semolina to use for a comparison. When you have the burrs set correctly, the GrainMaker will match it perfectly. My primary interest in semolina is to make pasta. Standard ratio is 100 grams per one large egg. Add small amounts of water as needed to get the right texture. Let it rest, covered, for 45 minutes, then roll it out. I use a Marcato 150 machine. Will be adding a ravioli attachment and buy a pasta extruder for making "tube"-like pasta, like elbow macaroni. Served up with homemade meatballs and sauce, it can't be beat -- especially with a homemade bagette!

Be interested in seeing how you motorized the mill. It seems to turn quite slowly like the Grain Mill motor which I believe is about 90 rpm.
@OutdoorsandCountryLiving
@OutdoorsandCountryLiving Жыл бұрын
It turns about 60 rpm at the burr plates. I have a 3/4 HP motor turning 1725 rpm with a small pulley. I then have a V-belt that comes off that to a couple other pullers to reduce the rpm down. A 1/2 HP motor would be plenty but I went with 3/4 hp due to availability when I got it. We love the mill and use it often. Let me know if I can be of any help or answer any other questions. - Tom

how did you set up your motor?
@OutdoorsandCountryLiving
@OutdoorsandCountryLiving Жыл бұрын
Hey. Sorry I just saw your question. I have a 3/4 HP marathon motor mounded to the lower portion of the table. (The table is just a large wire spool we made a top for). I bought a pulley kit from GrainMaker and use a V-belt to drive the food mill. I wired in a switch to turn it on and off and also added a couple plugs to run a vacuum cleaner for cleanup or to run the chamber vac on the same table. The motor speed is 1725 RPM but with the pulleys it reduces down so the burrs are only running about 60 rpm. You don’t want a food mill running fast and causing heat. Hope this helps? Let me know if you have any other questions. - Tom One other thing.. a 1/2 HP motor would be plenty to run it.

How do you clean the burrs after making peanut butter? And have you tried grinding sesame seeds to make tahini?
@OutdoorsandCountryLiving
@OutdoorsandCountryLiving 4 жыл бұрын
They come off and I just wash under hot water. Make sure you dry them good when done to help avoid any possible rust but I’ve never an any issues with it. You can use a little dawn dish soap to help wash it if needed. I’d use unsalted peanuts. I used dry roasted salted peanuts the first time and wow was it salty. I love peanuts but the salt really comes through in the peanut butter. You can always add some if you wanted but I use unsalted. I’ve not ground sesame seeds but it should do fine. We have done coffee beans, wheats, corn, peanuts and several other things. Hard red wheat makes some pretty good bread. :) the recipes when using fresh ground flour are slightly different but man is it good. We will get one bread recipes posted soon. Have a great day! - Tom

@@OutdoorsandCountryLiving Thanks for the info. I'm closing on my rural property this month, and likely move spring of next year. Home milling was the last major remaining piece to fulfill my Self-Sufficiency, and now that's accomplished. I agree about the flavor. While waiting for the mill, I went to our local Amish store to buy 50-lb sacks. I have the Hard Red Winter & Spring, Hard & Soft White, 20-lb of Durum for pasta. Still need Soft Red, mostly for crackers. But the taste is phenomenal! Store-bought flour now tastes like chalk dust. Will never go back. Last remaining piece is to figure out how to remove the bran for non-"whole wheat" applications like pizza dough. Once that's done, I'm "good to go!"

Bill Laut - Hey Bill. I was just thinking about you getting your food mill. You will want to mount it to something pretty substantial. I used an old heavy wire spool and put a top on one side. It’s heavy enough it won’t move when cranking by hand. Just something to think about before yours shows up. take care! - Tom

Hey there! Thanks for watching. It’s a food mill. The burrs in it basically grind and rub the peanuts so fine it makes it into a “butter” or soft texture. You use a different auger for corn and nuts than what you do for smaller grains. The auger helps break the corn/nuts into smaller pieces and push through the tube to the burrs. Hope this makes sense? 😁

It’s handy but requires a little cleanup afterwards. The first time we made peanut butter we used some salted roasted peanuts. Wow…. The salt was so strong you could hardly eat it. It was really concentrated after turning to peanut butter for some reason but we only made that mistake once. 😁
