Generally Northen British slang "an 'istorical figure" is just when people can't be bothered to pronounce the word properly so your brain fills in for you and adds an "an". When talking poshly *southerners looking at you ;)* , you will say "A historical figure"

Jordon, the reason why people say an historical or an and a word following with an h is because in most languages, h is considered a vowel sound and is treated with the same rules as a vowel. This was kept in traditional english during the immagration from Great Britain, but was eventually phased out by 1850

The reason people say "An historical figure" is because it's from old French and they still do it today. In French the letter "H" is considered a vowel in some cases. So when we put "an" in front of a word that starts with a vowel in English we also put it in front of an "H" sometimes due to that.

This is due to the fact that the word "History" originates from the Greek word Ιστορία which begins with a vowel (i). The "h" is there because in Ancient Greek the word used to be written with a specific symbol above "ι". Words with this symbol were agreed to be written with an "h" when transfered to English. (eg hemisphere, homosexual, hemorrhoids, hippopotamus, hippocampus etc.)

Like they are, and they're in the alphabet, but you don't pronounce them and French words that begin with H are treated like words that begin with a vowel, just like in English how is a word begins with a vowel we use "an" instead of "a." Idk if the same thing applies but :)

English grammar rules for a/an deal with the starting sound, not the starting letter. Some forms of english drop the 'h' from historical, in much the same way that some forms drop the 'h' from herb. So if you say 'erb', you would say 'an erb'. If you say 'istorical', you would say 'an istorical'. Dropping the 'h' has nothing to do with grammar, just with pronunciation. That being said, it might be a codified form of super correction; where you apply a rule in a place you normally wouldn't apply it just because it looks like it should be there.
