As an introvert I have always found it challenging to compete in the freelance photography world, but I've learnt some tricks which have helped. On a recent trip to Lindisfarne I made this video to talk about looking after yourself, choosing your photography genre, and some business tips as well when selling yourself to clients, all without having to fake extroversion. I also had a great time sitting down with photographer Simon Baxter to hear about his experience as a solo woodland and landscape photographer. Share this video on if you found it helpful and subscribe for future videos.

You are the antithetical embodiment of the Peter Mckinnon archetype that is so popular and frequently imitated in this community. Not to take away from Peter as I enjoy both of your content, however for very different reasons. What I appreciate about you is your vulnerability, and genuinely authentic approach towards whatever message it is that your are attempting to convey. Always look forward to your video drops and I think this was a solid topic that resonates with a lot of people. Cheers!!

Sean is just like a brother, you can cry on to, and he will tell you to be strong and you will be strong right after he told you to because you trust him that much. Peter is like a brother too, you can trust him too to cry onto but both of you will end up laugh at it afterwards and you will say fuck it i will do that mistakes again if i got a chance. You do the mistakes again, you run to Peter, never to Sean.

I don't agree . Peter McKinnon is an extrovert. Full enery out of a top charisma . But both are good m teacher and amazing brilliant photographer.

@@EliezaBaby I'm so glad he's not like MCKinnon... Not that I dislike him and not that I don't enjoy what he has to offer. But sometimes the Boom & Bash is just too much some days... He's no guru.. But he's entertaining... Sean is real.. Passionate and honest about his photography. And genuinely empathiser. He's a great role. I've been asked to run a photography course for 6 weeks and plan too show some of the group his videos. Top job Sean!! 👍😀👌🇬🇧

damn this actually made me pretty emotional, as a teenager surrounded by teachers, friends, parents pushing me to be louder, more assertive, more extroverted, it was really nice to hear another perspective, that success in a creative field can come without completely sacrificing who i truly am. cheers.

Very fleshed out, thoughtful, and moving. I feel that many youtubers' videos are lacking an artistic or human element -- they're too run and gun, too 'i need to produce content'-oriented. With your videos, I always depart feeling better educated as well as being move emotionally. I think this is definitely to be attributed to your thoughtfulness and your attempt to produce something genuine. It definitely shows that you put yourself in your work.

Sean, As I process your message, I realize that those of us who really hear you, we really hear you. I've photographed people for music packaging, editorial work, corporate reportage, and, fashion. Clients agreed that I was very good at eliciting the "appropriate" look for the particular use of my work. But, the effort exhausted me, and I had to escape, often into self-destructive behaviors. I "burned-out." Having been on hiatus from photography for a decade, I'm back, and comfortable with shooting only for my personal vision, insular as that may be perceived. I shoot for my quiet self and am much happier and healthier for it, the vast portfolio of good works I produced over the years of being "walking wounded" not withstanding. I'm quite comfortable with being a, somewhat rowdy, introvert. I hear you... Thank-You, Mike

Wonderful video as always. As a musician first (video and photo came after) I always struggled with this since making music and playing shows almost always involves going out to bars and venues or getting involved with other people in some way or another. I love people and all the connections that I make but I find it way easier on the whole to be alone or only spend time with my wife. This is something I struggle with constantly and it's nice to hear some tips and nice to know I'm not alone.

Since discovering your channel through the recommendation of our mutual chum James P, I've been preparing to stop, hit 'reset', then go again in a more calm, calculated, and comfortable manner. I like this video for a number of reasons. I hate driving somewhere just so I can take my dogs for a walk and am fortunate enough to be within walking distance of a couple of green space trails that will give us up to 5 km walking distance. Secondly, these trails are great for taking photos, different ones at different seasons of the year which also reduces my "hatred" for driving somewhere just to take photos. During the winter, here in Sudbury Canada (about 4hr drive north of Toronto), I will drive about 5 km to get to a park where we can get out, walk across the frozen lake, to get to a trail system of more than 10 km. Walking and photographing in my "backyard" is my favorite thing to do.

That sounds familiar to me, I’m an introvert and my partner is an extrovert, I think it works quite well, there is never an awkward silence even when we first met because he never shuts up haha only joking, but when he has finished talking, he has said so much that I now have lots of things to respond to and talk about. I have one friend, we’ve been friends since nursery school and she’s an extrovert, she’s always looked out for me from day one, she even answered the school register for me because I wouldn’t talk as a child. I guess the saying opposites attract is fairly true.

It’s relieving and inspiring to hear you voice (for as long as I can remember) what I’ve been feeling about conversing and interacting with people, and the inner conflicts on the intro vs extro subject. So thank you for reminding me that the path I’m on is right, so long as it’s my own.

When I was younger, Ive always thought that I am an extrovert. But over the years, I realized that I more introvert than what I actually thought. I enjoy my alone time - when I have the time to go to the woodlands, enjoy the sounds there, no talking, just serene scenes. I will take your "micro holiday" advice as my work schedules have been manic recently, the micro holidays might give me a bit of a break into my own space. Cheers and keep up the good work.

"I am never less alone than while by myself." I used to be the life of the party. As I've aged a little, I've found myself far more refreshed from introspection, but even my current career requires that I interact with the public. It's natural when I'm at work, but when I'm away from it, I'd just rather be alone/with my nuclear family. I've recently found an interest in content creation and testing some waters to see what I like. I liked this video quite a bit. Thank you

I found your channel recently. Immediately, I was struck by the quality of your photography and the thoughtfulness of your delivery. Society sees extroverts as the norm, which causes people to exaggerate this trait. What I see is that people who behave like extroverts don't give themselves enough time to think and listen. Nobody is born with all the answers and if you just blabber your way through life, very little will come of it.

Another nice video, Sean. I spent my career as a teacher and coach, and learned to be able to to harness my inner enthusiasm for my job to break out and act as an extrovert for periods of time. Meanwhile, being alone by a pond waiting for a Heron to pose nicely for me provides the recharge I need for my soul.

Thanks for this video, Sean. Being an introvert in an extroverts world isn't easy, mostly because we can be perceived as shy and secretive and even cold or distant. But I think introverts also have another very powerful asset over extroverts, that is we are perceived as more humble and honest and perhaps also more spiritual and less superficial (not saying extroverts ARE superficial of course, it's just a matter of perception). As it's a bit harder to get to know an introvert, it's like a reward for people patient enough to get to scratch the surface and discover what's underneath, as opposed to extroverts who will show everything off right away. I guess it's all about playing the hand that you were dealt with instead of trying to get new cards :)

Thank You ... Thank You ... Thank You ... As an introvert, and relatively new to the world of photography, I was beginning to feel alone and discouraged. Ever since picking up a camera, the woodlands and the desire to be alone with myself and my camera has become my way to calm a life that is constantly challenged by the ever increasing pace of life. I am not a technical photographer. I'm not one to talk about aperture, ISO, or shutter speed. All I have ever wanted is to be able to convey, through pictures, how I view the world around me and hopefully capture the wonder and the mood as that visualization was happening. Mood and the less obvious have always been goals. Thank you reaffirming my belief that introverts have a place in the world of art no matter the medium ...

Actually I think that being introvert is better for commercial reasons. You have better empathy, you can get into the skin of client easier and wait for the right moment to really connect with them. And it is especially important for portrait work. I fighted with being introvert when I was a teenager, but now I think it is actually easier than being extrovert once you stop fighting it.

May i say that you guys are BAD ASS !! Chronic pain feom breaking my back and a majority of my bones is what drove me into photography. Multiple head injuries is what turned me from being highly active people person to fleeing society. Im not a normal person anymore according to society. My inspiration comes from secluded places like this. My self esteem is bad, but is counterracted by my lovely and by my work. Im just a hobby photographer, love unconventional types of photography. Crying hookers, violence, sad road kill being eaten by voltures, and then my soft side of nature, and boudoir. I only display my generic photos as i dont want to seem like im showing off, and certainly wont go out and take photos of what is trendy at the moment just to get recognition. Yo sir, you look like the Willem Defoe of photography, and the other guy and his dog are damn cool also. Wish i had the chance to meet the both of ya ! Thanks for your video sir and God Bless :)

I identify as an introvert, but contrary to most I don't say that being alone is what recharged me. Instead I think of it like this. Extroverts are charged and centered by societal energies and introverts are charged and centered by environmental energies. It's not the solitude that I seek per se, it's that my relationship with the environments Im in are more beneficial to me than the relationships of my life.

Another set of pearls Mr T - For many years I was convinced I was an extrovert, until a very wise man pointed out that I was in fact an introvert dressed in an extrovert’s clothing ... only now am I coming to terms with who I really am and my new love, photography, is playing a key role in forging that identity. I am fortunate that I don’t think I’ll ever need to rely on it to make any kind of living, but there is a part of me that is regretful and wished I could maybe test myself to see if I could. You know, take the risk, see if it would have been possible? ... but regrettably I have the ‘excuse’ of being nearer 60, so I don’t need to confront that challenge and put my soul (and pride) on the line. I left a comment on your instagram about this subject. This video is extremely meaningful to me as I always fancied myself an extrovert. As I've gotten older, I realize that I'm just an introvert that has a big mouth and doesn't know when to be quiet. My most creative time is spent alone and enjoyed the most.

The last 20 years of my career involved so much social interaction that I was literally spent at the end of each day. It was an absolutely terrible job for an introvert and it was all I could do to spend a little time with my husband at the end of the day. It was at least six months after retirement before I had any desire to speak to anyone other than family or very close friends. Now that I can have however much "alone" time as I like, social activities are more enjoyable. Still, going out to the beach or into the woods alone with my camera is very much my happy place. Thanks for the insightful vlog and please keep on doing what you do so well!

As an introvert, the first time i watched your videos (tutorials) i felt a different connection, being a photographer, sometimes when going for shoots i literally would get nervous because i knew I had to try and be an extrovert. This made every shoot so draining. Your channel has constantly reminded me to be who I am and shoot how I see. Thank you

So true, I've been introverted all my life and have always felt more comfortable doing things on my own, this is one of the reasons why I enjoy landscape photography so much, but the wanting to do things on my own always fills me with the same old guilt that I'm being selfish for not sharing what I do with family and friends. Your vlogs are superb Sean, thanks for sharing your thoughts, knowing you have something in common with someone else really does put the mind at rest.

I found your channel just today on food photography at home, and I somehow made it to this video, thankfully. I'm an introvert and I've always struggled with feeling like I needed to push myself to be more outgoing because that's what attracted me. Now that I've learned being alone is what energizes me, I've come to appreciate that and really take the time to nourish myself in that way. I worked in the back at an animal hospital for 4 years, taking care of the animals. My coworkers didn't understand me. I spent 10 hours each day at that place and I had to find ways to get away from the people. I'd hide as much as I could, trying to gain some energy because it drained me. I was anxious all the time, especially when emergencies would happen. It was way too stimulating and overbearing for me. As much as I love the animals, I had to give myself a break and quit. I left that place about 5 months ago and I've finally started recovering and learning to be creative again. While I was there, I didn't have a chance to express myself. So, I've been spending the last few months resting, and creating a workspace at home where I can share what I need to with the world. Thank you for this video, it really resonated with me.

Great video. As an introvert myself I can so relate to the decompression that happens when alone. I have time built into each day for myself, even my drive to work is a nice 30 minute drive each way down a long straight mostly empty highway. Really helps me focus and recenter/recharge before and after work each day. I am a hobbyist photographer, but this hobby fits into my personality perfectly, my subjects tend to be abandoned locations off the beaten path. About once a month I try to take a day off work and spend that day driving and exploring and shooting. A good ten or twelve hours to myself does wonders for my mood. Thank you for the video.

Great message. Being an introvert (or socially sufficient) is no different from another human being. It is just a sober and minimalistic approach to community life. Same challenges, same game, just different strenghts. Kind regards.

Ive never considered myself as an introvert but after watching this maybe i have been most of my life, i ran on my own and still ride my bike on my own i always felt i needed that space and still do, and now photography has came along to offer me another way to drop the stress levels in everyday life. People who know me will say im not as i used to be a nightclub dj for 20 years but that was part of my personality and we can all raise our game for a while, great video sean really made me stop and think 🤔

Thank you so much for creating this video. More people need to hear the words you say. For way too long I have tried to run my photography the extrovert way. I failed hard and it set me back years. Only recently I started doing my things MY way. It works, but I still have a long way to go. More people need to hear what you have to say. Careers could be saved, or maybe even lives. I would totally promote you on my channel if I had more than 7 subscribers. Thank you for creating this. Thank you.

Once again, wisest of words Sir. I can relate to so much of this as a musician. I've discovered your channel this morning & am on the 4th video already. I have not (for my sins) even delved into your visual creative works yet, just found a connection with your narrative style & approach to things. Your influence & encouragement is far, far greater than I feel you are aware of...

Always enjoy your videos. You didn't struck me as an introvert but rather someone who is aware of his surroundings. I find it very brave to openly talk about that. I guess this is part of staying true to yourself. Anyway, keep up the great work. You're an amazing and very talented artist!

Thank you Sean for sharing your topic which no one wants to speak about. I am too an introvert and me at 35 yrs still struggling to cement my place in whatever I do. The few things that keep me going are support from my better half, my parents and that one thing that I keep telling to myself "Your time will come". Most of the world out there lives fake life and I am proud that I don't.
