The new fashion is to wear a skirt underneath instead of the traditional pants. Even though I'm a traditionalist at heart, this was very pretty and colorful. And man...I haven't been back to Vietnam in over twenty years and honestly my most vivid memory is the heat. Sooooo hot. Lol

I loved Ricky's Vietnam video. Also, cutting the embroidery off of that other fabric is genius. My mom is from Chester, Cheshire, England and my dad's parents are both from Berlin, Germany (my dad's first language was German despite being born in Canada). My husband is from England, but from a completely different area than my mum, Bishop Auckland, Durham. Our sons are first, second and third generation Canadian :)

Just found you and man is it hard to find a good ao dai tutorial! Your style of ao dai is so in right now! It’s known as the “Modernized Ao dai” and I’ve been looking for a good pattern/tutorial. Will you be making a more detailed video soon?

I got an ao dai custom made in Vietnam when I was there this summer! I'd love to wear it but I'm nervous to since I'm white and I'm not sure if it's considered appropriation or appreciation. They're such beautiful outfits regardless 😍
@Karen10839
@Karen10839 7 жыл бұрын
Hiii, I think it's okay if you wear it. Just wear it on the special occasions. I'm Vietnamese myself but I find myself not being able to wear an Ao Dai by myself when there isn't an event (IE: We actually had a spirit week where you'd dress culturally but I was nervous that I'd be the only one wearing it) because I'd feel like I stand out too much, especially when it catches many people's eyes. But it still would've been okay to do so because you're embracing x culture that day. I've just wore it to school a couple months back during a school celebration for Lunar New Year, that's another good time to wear an ao dai. Think of it this way, you brought yourself a costume, it's Halloween and you decide to wear it. But once Halloween is over, it wouldn't be as appropriate to wear it as to during Halloween because you really like the costume that you've picked out. I know that's not the best example but my point was that you should find the appropriate day to wear it. People usually wear Chinese/Vietnamese dresses when it's Lunar New Year or like a wedding, those are a few appropriate times where it is totally okay to wear it, after all, it symbolizes good luck and fortune. I think my mother wore plain ao dai in a photo with her friends during the years that she was still living in Vietnam. Just long story short because I feel like I'm totally annoying, repetitive, and terrible at explaining but I'm sure you can find the right time to wear it and appreciate it. It can go both ways depending on who is viewing this as. Maybe my opinion wouldn't matter but I can see that you appreciate the dress and perhaps even the Vietnamese culture, I wouldn't be upset if you wore an Ao dai. :)

I appreciate the input, especially from someone of Vietnamese background :) I'll probably save it for weddings and nice occasions. Thank you!

You might have made the torso of the top a bit too long or the chest too large. Either that or the gathering in the skirt, which might have added some volume unlike the more traditional trouser that is fitted through the bum even with the wide leg, caused the top to ride up and bunched around the back and the side. Or the dress form which you made the pattern from have slightly different shape to you so you can't effectively do the alteration. I notice that you were going for a more classic shape/contour on the top so the smooth laying of the fabric on the body is very important. The beauty about the vietnamese ao dai, in my opinion, is how it is tailored specifically to the wearer to show their curves in the most flattering way. (Though newer ao dai fashion and silhouette beg to differ.) People always return to the tailor for fitting and alterations when they are making new ao dai to make sure everything sits right. I hope that you can take you of my observations and improve. This is an old video and I am just a passing viewer, but I am glad that you were interested in making an ao dai. The result is very different from what I have seen before. I hope you will continue to explore the art of making ao dai at some point. The combination of shape and fabric is especially fun to play with.

ooo alll valid points! and thank you:) it was my first time making one and i had no idea wear to start haha the gathers on the skirt definitely got poofy and the dress form was also a little off. The chambray was also thicker than traditional ao dai fabric. There's a lot of things that could've been done differently but still learning... one day i hope i can work with an ao dai expert :)
