My 10 year old daughter and I sorted her parts into 3 sets of 10 craft drawers over the last six months. She has probably 40 lbs of Lego- mostly Friends and Disney playsets, but also my childhood pirate and castle Lego and a huge bin of assorted Lego from the thrift store. We’ve been using online instructions to build “official sets” using our existing parts including the cat hotel and a cool house. I’ve been building various birds. Sorting was soooo worthwhile. We started with a color sort but switched to a piece type sort- inspired by your videos. Definitely hire someone to help with the sorting, but film them in Timelapse. It’s strangely meditative.

So fun looking into how you’re sorting. It’s also fun seeing how different peoples part collections are depending on which style of building that they like to do.

Great to see you made some real progress! This seems a lot more ergonomic to work with. I just finished sorting my collection myself after probably a month of intermittent work. ~10 akro mils organizers (+bagged bulk) and probably 20,000 - 22,000 parts. Still a ton of stuff in bulk mix, but those parts are all easy to find.

Oh man I just love your sorting videos, of your storage. Just looks so good. When I get to that stage (I am needing some more storage right now but I'm fine for now) I want to do it like this I just makes sense. With those bins and little containers in them. With me getting my first pab order this past month it definitely won't be my last. I sorted my bulk plastic containers of 2×2, 2x3, 2x4 from the mixed in mega blocks today so it's just lego in them to then put the parts I had in my small drawer unit in them. So much better

I had a pick a brick haul yesterday at Bricks and Minifigs, and I scored some treasure. I found two throwbot masks from 1998, a throwbot head, Bionicle bits, a chrome silver brick, and a green pipe from Lego Mario. I also found a complete Lego guy in the pick a brick. I told the manager about the Lego guy, but he told me to go ahead and throw it in my pick a brick bag since I found it fair and square

I find it interesting how people created their own systems of Lego sorting/ organization of parts. I have experimented over the last few years with our collection. My thoughts on Lego organization is simple. There is no right way. My advice is create a system for yourself based on how you build. I personally sort by part type. I find it easy to pull a bin and dump it on sorting tray to find the color I need. I think it is best to consider the time vs value of your system. The more sort down, the more time, space, and bins are required. I like to have broad categories and then sub categories. Example....plates, brick, slopes, etc. The sort by size. Lastly as your bins fill up break out your dominant colors and create a larger overflow bin. When I sort bulk lots, I can do it quickly by using general categories. I then put each category away easily because it is all stored in one section. I use the KISS method. It works great for me.

Hi there, luv your videos. I have a question: I'm in an apt with limited space, will be using the livingroom as a lego "room"/living room. How can I sort an entire huge tote into a system like this that you have? I'm finally begining a lego city (just moved in so I'll be moving the started city to the living room from the small dining area soon), I also came up with an idea to "integrate" the livingroom tv into the city, by using the tv as a drive in screen. Sound like an awesome idea? What do you think, any ideas? Thanks...

Maybe for the label trouble, try this out! Take a picture of the containers, keep the picture on your phone or tablet, and label the draws in the picture? If you use the right app, something like goodnotes or onenote where you can easily save a picture and write directly on top of it, that would make it so you can instantly rewrite the label if you change things.

Not that you want to replace the parts bins, but commercial resellers sell bins that are made by Akro-Mils. These bins can be setup in multiple ways either on a shelf, stacked or on a wall panel, and they also are sold with optional dividers. The cost wouldn't be much more than this type of storage, but it would be easy to add on to it and its not drawers, they are open bins which are much easier to see and pick parts.

Why not use an excel system? Give each column a letter, each row a number, and u can keep an excel spreadsheet on your comuputer or print out a cheat sheet and laminate it and put it near your bins out of the way of your review shots. Then u would only need 1 small sticker across the top row for columns and 1 small sticker down the first column for your rows.

Personally, I will be creating a spreadsheet to reference some of my storage. Nothing like your inventory, but enough that I will need a good system to rely on. I had used labels, but they became outdated way too fast. I am still organizing my new display and work area downstairs. I’ll still build smaller sets upstairs (and display some upstairs) and then build the bigger sets downstairs. 😊

You should put the miscellaneous parts in the heads by color, then put a label on the back of the head. Also the stickers/decals could be put in a folder, binder, or ziplock bag. That’ll free up a bunch of drawers

i love the new sort it looks awesome. nothing worse than having to search when you need something. i worked in a fabrication shop and we had a parts wall that had literally hundreds of fasteners and parts. our office manager went through and made a bin map that was color coded so screws were all listed as red on the sheet and so on, it worked pretty well and she listed our refills and what bin they were in. she had it laminated. and i was kept on top of our bins. thankfully she made a few copies.
