I have a ton of Lego and the way I sort it is instead of small drawer units I use larger ones to sort by type and use different sizes of ziplock bags to sort by colour. I ofcourse try to not drop my stuff, but in case I accidentally do drop one of them they don't explode all over the floor and I can just pick it back up. It's, imo, ideal for when you have so much and so much different Lego!

I use an arrangement of pieces sorted by color, but then the pieces are further divided within their color into 3 sections: small plates, functioning pieces (like hinges), and the remaining pieces like bricks and stuff. I have other systems for big plates, minifigures, etc. The way you did it is really good, and the way you displayed the pieces in the drawer is GENIUS! I never would be able to come up with a subsystem like that! great video!

Tip about the lost space in the Alex unit: if you don't secure the metal side rails in with the screws to the drawer you can pull them out when you need to and just push it back in all the way.
@renzo260

@akosgaspar9681
@akosgaspar9681 2 ай бұрын
@@renzo260 No, it isn't. We have a similar Alex we've been using for years (not this wide / shallow model but the narrow / deep variant) and the side rail is VERY sensitive to any force that is not 100% parallel with its movement (which is inevitable if you take the drawers out often). I had to replace 3 or 4 rails so far. The video is actually pretty smart and goes through similar steps I have. Bonus points for the slightly U-shaped bottoms of the trays (it's a pain to take small parts out if they stuck in the corner of a tray that has only right angles). On the other hand, you probably lose a lot of space (20-30%) that is in between the trays. If I played alone, still this would be the way to go. Unfortunately (/sarcasm) I have to share my collection with 2 very enthusiastic but much less organized kids so I stick with bigger trays and a lot of digging for the time being.

I use the Alex drawers as well. I stack two units as you did so in total I have 36 drawers. I've been sorting for ages and most of my containers are the trays with the lids but everytime I need a piece I need to take the tray out and open the lid, very impractical. Then I started using the bottoms of cereal packets, it allowed me to recycle the boxes and I can fit quite a considerable amount of compartments in the drawers allowing me to make sorting more granular. It's a work in progress but the best method of sorting for me and many others is using the Alex drawers. I notice Lego uses similar drawers and I agree @TiagoCatarino should get a cut from every Alex drawer Ikea sells as I am sure most people that buy them have Lego collections!
@renzo260
@renzo260 21 күн бұрын
That's awesome! I agree the trays can be a pain, the ones I have are just collecting dust at this point. After a couple months of using the Ikea containers as inserts, I'm already working on a redesign. Sorting is one thing, but the storage is always evolving to your needs. I think if Ikea gives him a cut from all the units sold to store Lego, Tiago can go on a permanent vacation to some beach far far away hahaha

The system I plan to use for my collection is one that I _ahem_ “borrowed” from Solid Brix Studios. His involves a bunch of modular shelves from Ikea (IVAR, I think) combined with clear U-Line storage bins. It’s designed with expansion, ease of access, and quick reorganization in mind, which is a huge plus for me.
@renzo260
@renzo260 3 ай бұрын
I’ve seen that, also a great option! They are indeed the IVAR shelves. The only thing I would worry about is a lot of dust building up in the bins that hold parts I don’t use a lot, since everything is open. David has a TON of parts though and he builds huge MOCs. A system like that does make a lot of sense for him I think. At the end of the day, it all comes down to personal preference and what works in your situation.

Great video. I had seen that Tiago Catarino used these shelving units but really like the containers you added. I sort by part type but due to space limitations, they are all in 100+ zip lock bags in a tall stack of cardboard boxes. Not a convenient way to store at all. You said you wished they came in black (in one of the comments) but on the Canadian Ikea website they do. The 3 colour options are white, gray-turquoise and black-brown. I think I would still prefer the white if I were to get some, however I would still need to find space for the shelving units themselves first. :)

Thanks, appreciate it! That does sound like a bit of a struggle yes 😂 It’s good that you already have everything pre-sorted though. Helps a lot when you do find the space for a better system. The video only showed a small bit of sorting, but I still have a long way to go honestly. Oh really? We have the white, gray-turquoise and light oak I believe. I’m just not a huge fan of white walls and furniture. Will probably be repainting the studio at some point too, this is just how it was when I moved in there

Nice rundown on sorting Lego. Those short drawers and modular trays seem like a smooth way to go. I see you're also a fan of sticking things to a drawer face to represent what's inside--way better (and more fun) than labels! I've done that for other stuff, and if I sorted my Lego in drawers, I'd do the same for that too. Don't have a big enough collection (yet?) to justify drawering them, though, so for now I'm able to pull off shelf-sorting and just stacking like-bricks together on increasingly-long plates, and nonstackables onto small trays, or in tiny open shallow bins, and such. Though this def isn't a solved system, I'm sure there're more improvements hidden from me yet. Regardless, organization often feels more like an organic art than anything else. Depends on so many factors, many subjective. (Though I can think of few ways to justify sorting by color 👀).
@renzo260
@renzo260 11 күн бұрын
Definitely! It shows me what I’m looking for right away, without the need to open 6 different drawers. It really is a continuous thing, yes. I’ve actually been moving around the inserts, looking at different types of inserts and already need to expand the storage. I feel like I’ll never be fully satisfied with a single system, but only time will tell. Color just seems very chaotic to me, but also that would probably depend on the exact use. How would you use it?
@WhatIsNature
@WhatIsNature 11 күн бұрын
@@renzo260 Color makes sense but, for me, generally just as 2nd order, and in the obvious ways. E.g., I have my 1x1 round tiles together, placed in a single pill-organizer (1st order) divvied in each pocket by color (2nd order). This is useful when I need to spot exactly how many of each I have when something is color dependent, like a game mechanic/function where a base mechanic uses 1x1 round tiles, and the specific function is color-dependent--so I need my colors organized at a glance! But, I actually order my bricks by color as 1st order, then dimension as 2nd order. So I've got these towers of bricks, each tower stacked on its own plate, each tower a different color, and each tower is ordered uniformly by progressive dimension. I find what color I need first, then swiftly grab the relevant dimension from the tower as if from a file cabinet. Ofc if my collection were much bigger (or even smaller), I might vary how I do any of these!

I 3D printed my own interlocking bins. After that I made all one drawer one color and than every drawer has the same layout but per color. So all my 1 by 1s are in the same spot just different level to pick the right color. I hav about 150,000 pieces. I used the drawers from the Ikea closet collection and the small pieces are in the little 64 drawer mills.

I sort the following way; small pieces by type, plates by colour, slopes by colour, bricks by colour, technics complete, wheels, tires, wheel bases complete, windows by type, transparent bricks and plates complete, longest bricks by type, rails complete. I'm currently moving from small container cabinets to transparent plastic bags from the supermarket, kept in big low plastic containers with lids. Small parts, medium grey, dark grey parts are still in the cabinets. I keep dedicated part for my mocs in smaller containers and once I have enough pieces set aside, I start the builds. Every few months, I order the missing parts online, plus a few extra parts. Once every couple of weeks, I re-sort the mixed containers back to where the parts are supposed to be.

@@renzo260 The smaller amounts of coloured bricks, like magenta and the many shades of lighter blue, I simply keep them in their own single bags by colour without dividing by type. I use the long low trays with a small divider on the side from IKEA when I empty out a bag to check for parts. I can also check for parts by simply looking through the bags for parts and taking them out without having to empty the bags.

@renzo260 Ай бұрын
I just did some quick math while at Ikea. You can fit 6 small boxes from left to right. Half of the drawers get 2 rows and half just get one, so that would be 54. Half of them get the medium size for the second row and 3 all the way in the back, so 18. Lastly you can fit 4 of the big ones in the back, with 6 drawers that’s 24. But since I wanted the medium ones there too, it’s 18 instead. And I think I got some extras cause I have a bunch of the smaller ones left
