Making my own ptu drain plug in a 2016 ford explorer!

Ford really failed on this design by putting the ptu right above the exhaust and no drain plug. Here's how I drilled my own drain plug to help this process by a ton! I used a 7/16" drill bit (with a smaller bit for a pilot hole), a 1/4" npt tap and a 1/4" npt plug. I used some 75/140w fluid for the main part of it! This is my first time ever doing a video like this so it's not a master mechanic video and just me showing how I did it! Feel free to leave any tips or feedback below!

Thank you very much. I have the same year and model. Ive seen other videos, but different years/models. Some with coolers, some with turbos. You showed the exact spot to drill and which tools to use.

For reference, the sport and platinum trim explorers from 2016 to 2019 do have the ptu cooler with a drain plug but the temp sensor blocks the fill port. It took ford till 2020 to openly admit the ptu should be serviced around 30k miles cause I'm sure they paid for a lot of replacements under warranty. Heck I've seen someone with a ptu failure under 35k miles 👀 great tutorial btw

That's why I checked the level of my PTU & rear diff. early around 3,000 - 5,000 miles. I was able to pump in 150ml before it streamed out of the fill port of both. I'm lucky that Ford finally realized these things need regular fluid changes and put factory drain plugs in both.

DORMAN has built their own PTU which is beefier AND has a drain plug. $850 !

The Dorman one that is compatible with 2016’s is the 600-239 model, and 1000 bucks, and doesn’t have heat shield or a drain plug. Which is weird because they have PTUs for the 2007-2015 Explorers that are the 600-234XD model. They’re a little cheaper, comes the heat shield, and a drain plug. wtf?

7/16 inch diameter drill bit (almost 1/2"), is larger than a 1/4 inch diameter plug. I am confused, because the hole diameter would be too large for the plug?!😮

1/4" NPT (National Pipe Thread) is for the size of threads on the outside of a 1/4" inner diameter pipe. Pipe is measured by inside diameter, while tubing is measured by outside diameter. I hope that makes more sense now.

Why cannot the fill plug be replaced with an L shaped adapter that you could connect a heater hose to and run that to the top of the engine bay? Then you could fill from the top. That is what I am going to try on my SHO.

If I'm already down there to drain it, it's pretty quick to fill it. Either way you gotta get under the vehicle lol. And you know it's full when it starts pouring out, if you fill it from the top how will you know when it's full if it can't drip out? There's no dipstick for these

@jeffreylindley845 but you don't always get all of it out. Overfilling would be harmful to the ptu. The video wasn't about how to fill it anyways. It was about how to make your own drain plug lol. You can fill it however you want I just always like knowing it's filled to the top and no more
