I’ve always loved watching videos of the wands “post-production” but seeing what goes on behind the scenes and the amount of work that actually goes into each wand makes me appreciate them even more!

The imperfectness of the little details are my favorite.

It’s really interesting to see the full process for how you make your sands as they end up looking so good!! It’s an inspiration to see how you started with hand carving and how these new tools (which aren’t extensive in the woodworking world) have opened up so many creative opportunities! Oh and your music choices 👊🤩

@@KivoxEnder Thanks for the invite, do you do them at set times? I ask as I can’t do tonight, plus I’m in Wales UK, so it’d be like 1am here and as much as I want to deny it I’m old so I’ll be in bed 😁

Oh, I see, for the most part we do it on Friday nights, but occasionally will do it on Saturday during the day. Maybe one of these weekends will do a stream keep an eye out.

You know sometimes people forget the amount of work that goes into making these wands, skill, talent and imagination is what you're paying for. Thank for this behind the scenes video, I'm not sure about the rest of you but I love seeing these types of videos. ❤💯/*✨️✨️

Workshop and wands are looking great. I really liked the idea of the nailed handle and may borrow that idea for something not wand related.. Have you tried running a 1/2" belt in your 1 x 30 belt sander without the platen? It really works well for carving in smaller twists and spirals. Keep up the good work.

I haven’t tried that, but I will have to, thanks for the idea , do you make wands too

I have made a few and made one on my 1 x 30 after seeing a video where someone used that method. I'm more focused on using geometry and Islamic art in wood turning at the moment. I'd love to make more wands, but it's not profitable in the UK sadly.

Awesome video. Gives us some insight to your wand making. Have your tried using abrasive cleaning sticks to clean your sanding belt? They work really well and extend the life of your sanding belts.

Are usually use this drum sander cleaner thing that I have that’s kind of like a big eraser and sometimes I just use the compressor to blow it off

Great to see a production vid. Is your dust collection good enough that you don't have a worry about it being a problem for your camera? I usually end up sticking to my iPhone for workshop vids because I can't bring myself to exposing my expensive DSLR to the dust in my shop. Also, when you use different metal bits, do you have different finishes you prefer to keep the metal from tarnishing/rusting over time? I'd love to hear more about your finishing in general as well. I usually stick with an oil and wax finish to preserve the wood look, but when there's dye/paint involved, a clear coat is almost required instead. I've not settled on a good looking durable finish for that and would love to hear what you've tried. Sorry, I could go on...LOL Anyway, thanks for sharing!

My desk collection is not the best and honestly it’s more about positioning than anything else. The closer you are to the hose, the better type of thing. I do have an air filtration system hanging up as well, and that pulls a lot of the finer dust out of the air. But of course there’s always gonna be some dust getting into the cameras I don’t use a DSLR I actually use a Sony zv1 amzn.to/3RN6br0 , really good, compact camera, but I do occasionally use my phone if I want to do a big time lapse. As for the finishing, I usually use a spray lacquer on most of my ones, probably about 95% of them I can’t really come up with a reason to not use one., and it’s cool dude, I don’t mind talking about stuff. You should hop onto the Friday live stream, and we can talk some more. Or you could just post another comment. That’s fine too.

@@KivoxEnder Yeah, dust collection is on my "TBD" list...something better than a mask and shop vac. 😅 Same for a better shop camera. Thanks for the link; will check it out as an option. I use a special spray varnish for my metal work made for musical instruments. Pretty durable and preserves the shine on the copper and brass, but expensive so I try to use it sparingly. Clear acrylic is OK, but can look thick and plastic. Got one in production now I'm trying out a polyurethane on. It's just ebonized walnut, so won't get an idea of how it will react with paint/dye, but will see how it looks and sprays at least. (Speaking of, have you tried ebonizing?) Will try to catch a live stream if I can. I'm usually a night owl on Pacific time...lol. What time of day do you usually stream?
@KivoxEnder

I have not tried that, I’m going to actually look it up right after I finish this reply. We stream on Friday night at 7 PM Eastern standard time.

@@KivoxEnder Ebonizer is pretty easy to make. Just put some #0000 steel wool in a jar with distilled vinegar for several days till it dissolves then filter out the sediment and it's done. It can be brushed on to wood to darken it; blacks, browns, and grays. I think it reacts with tannins, since woods that seem to have lots react best. Walnut will turn almost black, and works great on oak and purple heart. I've gotten some nice gray tones out of alder and cherry, but almost no change in maple or padouk. Just test on some scrap to see what works best. Will have to sand lightly after it dries as it raises the grain like water will. Fine grit only, or you will sand through the darkened wood. Nice because it reacts with the wood and won't rub off like paint or dye, and won't cover up all the wood grain. 4PM here so very doable. Will pop in this week. Look forward to it.
