[Note: This video contains a very minor spoiler about a special effects sequence in Star Wars: The Force Awakens]
One of the many surprises in Star Wars: The Force Awakens that delighted fans was the appearance of the Dejarik holochess game on the Millennium Falcon. Adam Savage went behind-the-scenes at Tippett Studio to watch Phil Tippett and his team create the stop-motion animation sequence, and learns a secret about how this cameo connects to the original Star Wars!
See the holochess pieces up close in these photos: www.tested.com/starwars/558065...
Thanks so much to Tippett Studio for giving us access to this amazing process!

The idea that the game picked up from the last sequence is jaw dropping attention to detail, along with the remake of the pieces/characters and how it was made. All for a few seconds at best of time on screen. Details, it's all about the details. Nice work.

+Angus Lamont (AnimateAngus) Agreed. This definitely visually stood out in the film, in a positive way. I'm a big practical effects fan, and it's nice to see them give stop motion a win here!
@MrTynanDraper
@MrTynanDraper 8 жыл бұрын
+Angus Lamont (AnimateAngus) well that's just my point. . modern stop motion is nearly indistinguishable from modern CGI. . lighting in modern CGI has improved to the point it also looks like a real life object. . So it is odd to say that one technique is "far superior" to the other. . when you may not even be able to tell the difference.. . At which point whatever technique is fastest and cheapest should be the main consideration.
@ACoolStupidDog
@ACoolStupidDog 8 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Tynan CGI is very noticeable when put next to a tangible effect. That's pretty much why in TFA the only two instances of CGI are VERY noticeable and much less seamless compared to the costumes and other elements.

It was a nice tip of the hat to the original that they used stop motion. However, I will say (and don't kill me for saying this) that this is one sequence where it would have made sense to use CGI, since in the actual Star Wars universe itself, they are digitally rendered creatures displayed through a hologram. But this works too, and clearly these guys are masters at what they do.

Star Wars is in a different place now. Back then, we were so excited, but now; not so much. The fanbase is fractured. Our last hope is the Ahsoka show, which it's first two episodes just released, but has led some to believe that even this show won't save the fandom. We will just have to see, once the show is done.

Goblin Honey Ah, well of course they had to relate it the the original Trilogy. They also needed to give *spoilers* Han Solo a good send off while introducing new characters ; they did this by giving the audience familiar things while showing them new stuff. 7 is a lot more like the introduction and setup for the audience, 8 and 9 can take it in a different direction and no longer will be tied down.

@TomsBackyardWorkshop
@TomsBackyardWorkshop 8 жыл бұрын
You got me there, it was better than the prequels. A turd is better than the prequels. As for a formula there was none. You've got a droid with a bit of vital information stuck on a desert planet with storm troupers chasing it. It gets briefly captured by a small alien then rescued by a future Jedi who knows nothing about the force. The bad guy is related to one of the good guys. They go to a cantina seeking safe transport. They escape from the desert planet in the Millennium Falcon. Han Solo doesn't want to get involved. There's a giant laser gun that destroys planets. They have to destroy the gun to prevent the destruction of the rebellion. In order to destroy the gun they have to take down the shields. then the X-wing pilots fly along a trench filled with gun turrets. Most of the pilots die. Then they have to fly inside the gun to blow it up. One of the hero's even gets captured and tortured. Did I miss anything? I have no problem with call backs to previous episodes but you have to add to the story. The only thing new that I can think of is there was a storm trouper who switched sides and he dies.
