This video explains why I need a new rent, what I want in a tent, what is available to buy and how I came up with my design.
The next video will cover the construction of the tent.

Great video! Been looking into making my own tent and not many people show the process of creating the design, just the build and finished results. I won’t be able to use anyone else’s design since I am much taller than most people and everyone has different requirements, but I will be able to use your explanations and ideas to make a tent that fits me and my requirements. Thank you!

I am glad it is helpful. Best part of making your own is custom size. I imagine this is more important to a tall person like you than a shortie like me.

Nice to see you again. I've got to learn to sew this year because I need to reupholster some tractor seats. Good Luck, Rick

Hi Rick. Have fun learning. It is not as hard as you think but seats sound difficult with the curves.

@@RestlessKiwiHiker Fortunately, I have a lot of experience with sheet metal layout and welding. I figure there is enough similarities that I can do the layout. Learning to control the sewing machine will be the big task. BTW, like you, I have always believed in doing it myself to get it done right. I even built our house. Good Luck, Rick

Kiwi, you really should be a designer in the US. We could all use your expertise!

Nice project development from design through prototyping. My wife creates couture wedding gowns and it's a very similar process. Having a tent you designed and built will be very satisfying when out on the trail.
@RestlessKiwiHiker

Yes I imagine the design process is similar, though a lot better precision and quality required by your wife than my amateur effort. It is satisfying using something I made

Hi...I love your idea of making your own ..could I ask what poles were used for the free standing version..as I don't fancy paying 149 for poles ..or would you recommend
@RestlessKiwiHiker
@RestlessKiwiHiker 3 ай бұрын
I can't remember the name of the place, I think maybe questoutfitters, but I found a place where you can get pole segments and components and make your own for much cheaper than buying ready made.

I am using my new sleeping bag currently on my Korea Thru Hike.419g for theoretical-12°C. The coldest night on trail was 3°C and I was comfortable. I will do a video on this at some stage. I also made a new tent I am also using which is great. Once again I will do a video on it.

If dyneema is 15 times stronger than steel how is this worked out? Is it in tension, compression weight to ratio Just trying to understand Thank you
@RestlessKiwiHiker
@RestlessKiwiHiker 3 жыл бұрын
It is breaking strength when comparing same weight of the steel and dyneema

@@RestlessKiwiHiker So that is miss leading. I couldn’t knock a nail in with it if it is the same shape as a hammer or it would be useless as a nail So only under tension it is stronger Cheers
@RestlessKiwiHiker
@RestlessKiwiHiker 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it is tensile strength. I understand your comment about the Hammer but as it is in relation to a tent then the tensile strength is the relevant and logical measure and therefore fully appropriate.
