Forty years ago I worked on roofs, and nearly got killed or injured when I was an apprentice. Slipped on frosty sarking and straight off the roof, lucky scaffold was there. Preperation as with most things is key. I liked your plywood pad on top of the ridge Robin not seen that before, great idea.

Top class as always and layed out simple its like you say sometimes we can work ourselves into a tizzie of anxiety over the end product instead of taking it one simple step at a time would love to see a video if you ever come across a valley running vrite through the middle of a chimney dont know why people do them but they do a recipe for a leak but hey its easy draw it on a piece of paper

Robin, i have often wondered would it work if you offset the rafter tops by a timber width such that you could then get fixings straight through the ridge into the rafter plumb cut rather than skew nailing. perhaps it might put to much strain on the ridge board, i dont know. i know the usual way has been done for years but this offset idea crossed my brain and i wondered? Anyway you are the man who will know.
@tomsmith9048
@tomsmith9048 8 күн бұрын
It's for strength reasons so the opposite common rafter is pushing back forming a triangle if it was offset technically it could buckle the ridge over time hope this helps 🔨 0:01

So simple and yet so perfect. I thought about an editing strategy for the videos to improve. Perhaps when explaining what is going to be built in the video, use some of the end result footage alongside the description. Just so us newbie DIYers can see what it should look like so we can visualise the end product as we are being taught the method. Hope that makes sense. Of course we could go to the end and see it But for the content quality, I think it will look mint that way. Even more professional in regards to tuition

If the birds mouth is a bit variable will that not affect the pitch angle a wee bit or is birds mouth built in to the app?
@chrisperkins6340
@chrisperkins6340 8 күн бұрын
The birds mouth being smaller or bigger won't alter the pitch as the plumb cut and seat cut remain the same angles. It would just lower or raise the ridge height.

@deanc486

Yeah wall plates are usually laid on a cement mix to level and give a final height. Then L shaped straps are fixed to the top of the wall plate and down onto the internal wall face, about 1.5m apart. These stop the wall plates from moving and spreading. Also the collar timbers that were put in for the working floor are fixed to the rafters creating triangles, again to stop spreading.
