Mother nature is at it again, trouncing up the degrees to a June afternoon.. what happened to the snow? Fourth harvest, boil and we make syrup. Hopefully we'll have better temps and can collect more, but if not we at least have some smokey maple goodness to show for the work!

You're not kidding; last night we it was spring, this morning nobody wants to leave the house because it's cold and rainy! Certainly isn't the kind of weather you want to stand around in boiling sap. Hope you're sugaring is going well though, let me know how it turns out! I'll keep the lighthearted stuff coming as much as I can, seems to be even when I'm frustrated I still crack a joke. Might be something to that, but I don't want to delve into the psyche too deep lol 🤪😜

Hahahaha, if we're not careful that nickname is going to stick🤣I hope the weather turns around too. Funny enough I never really talk about the weather, but I'm absolutely at the mercy to the disposition of Mother Nature right now, and she's going through something it seems. The highs and lows of temperature are so fundamental to the kind of season we get, I couldn't begin to imagine the stress level of farmers. Whole new respect for those cats that carve out a living with so many variables. 🚜🌡 Thanks for hanging out, hope to see you on the next one!

Woohoo, the first boil is so much fun! Thank you for watching, and a big ol' hearty bonjour to you out in Québec; The grand-daddy of maple syrup country 🍁🍁🍁 !!! Ms. Lady and I were just talking yesterday afternoon about how much fun it would be to head up the Ottawa valley and into Quebec this time of year and stop at all the sugarshacks along the way. Don't know if that's even an adventure you can do, but they do have something like that for butter-tarts in our neck of the woods during the summer, so I'd bet there is. Hope you're having an amazing day there! How's the winter been, feel like it might be a good sap season?

Loved every bit of this process. Nice to see that Amber color. Got a couple batches this year that were golden. Hoping to get another run in, but yeah this weather is something.

Thank you! I don't know if there's a "23 and me" for maple trees, but would love to know what we're working with out here. 😃🍁Still reading up on how to identify, but we definitely did get a decent colour this year. Hope you get another run in as well! Has spring staved off so far where you're at? Do you use a hydrometer and float cup when finishing by any chance? Only reason I ask is we had a more golden sap the first year we did it and I think it might have been because we weren't getting to the final sugar levels we needed. I'm not affiliated with these guys, but we bought ours from Berry Hill (bit.ly/4c5Z9qO) and it was a game changer. Thanks for hanging out with us! Happy sugaring!🍁🍁

@@simplewoodslife I’m very familiar with the trees on our property and can identify them in my sleep 😂. Spring is basically here, but our maples down here are always the last one to bud so we got some sap flow still. I used the hydrometer and it definitely helped to make sure we were where we needed to be. I did go to Reddit for info, and general consensus is that it’s good. Definitely planning on expanding operations next year, and hope you get that shack built. Hope the rest of this season goes well!! 🤙🏻

@@natemiller6802 That's awesome! I bet the syrup is delicious, golden is nothing to scoff at - sorry, wasn't trying to that if it came across that way. Sap's measured in different grades, but it's all tasty! Hope the season goes well for you too! Maybe I'll send some close up photos of my trees and see if you can identify them 😂😂

@@simplewoodslife I love any kind of syrup I get, but making it yourself is arguably the best out there. Best way to identify trees if you don’t know what you’re looking at, is to wait for the leaves to fill in and keep note of which ones are maples.
@simplewoodslife
@simplewoodslife 5 ай бұрын
@natemiller6802 Agreed on the syrup! I know which ones are maples for sure, just not in-depth on what kind of species of maples they are. Will continue to try and figure it out, but for now they're just delicious ones 🍁😆

😃🙌 thank you for the lovely comment! You're totally right; 5 gallons a pail there on the big Canadian Tire ones. The green and blue ones hanging on the trees are 2 gallon buckets. We're kind of in the same situation. Weekend chilled down quite swiftly and Sunday was bitter with the wind, and it tried to snow all day. Sub-zero over night, but this afternoon is promising around 4° with tomorrow apparently similar. So maybe the maple-sap spirits are giving you guys and us a little break here? I'm really not ready to be done with the season. 🍁 Wishing you both happy sapping at the off-grid!

A liter is a smidge over a quart. We have 26 taps-sugars and reds. Two boils so far=1 3/4 gallons of syrup. We have another 40 gallons of sap...boil #3 soon.
@simplewoodslife
@simplewoodslife 5 ай бұрын
US or Canadian quarts? 🤣🤣🤣 1 3/4 gallons of syrup is impressive, sounds like you are having a pretty decent season over there! We also pulled out just near 1 3/4 "something" of syrup. I don't want to type litre there, because it's a sad word to type when I divide gallons by 3.785. Either way, we both have syrup so I'm going to spend the rest of my Saturday holding onto that! 🍁 All seriousness, that's awesome for you, interested on your final output at the end of the season if you're hauling that much goodness out on two boils so far, would love to know how much you end up with. Do you sell any of it, or just keep it for personal use and gifts?

Will let you know. My husband just informed me we have 55 gallons of sap after collecting today. I think our sap has been about 2.2Brix...not too shabby. We are in the Adirondacks near Lake Placid..btw..not to to far from Ontario..but much closer to Montreal. We store our sap in a chest freezer/fridge to collect enough for a decent boil.@@simplewoodslife

@annmacbride3100 Thank you! I just received that (it seemed to come through as a series of texts with a note document vs. an email, so my email client didn't process it as regular mail), but I've found it. I did reply, however in case that doesn't come back to you wanted to say your maple syrup looks BEAUTIFUL and super delicious!! Love how dark that is, must taste wonderful! Oh, and kudos on that evaporator, super setup there. Do you dig the three compartments? I was looking at those on a deep-dive one afternoon but I think you need to take a lot more sap out of the woods to get them up to speed than we're currently getting. 😂🍁 Thanks for sending those however, loved them!
@annmacbride3100
@annmacbride3100 5 ай бұрын
@@simplewoodslifeI think we could have gone with the all in one pan. We seem to boil for a day due to our work schedules..so that third compartment never gets drawn off. I think it really depends on how much sap you have and how many days in a row you can boil. As far as the syrup. this is the first year we got the darker syrup. I will have to say, the 1st boil turned out light/delicate...its the best tasting stuff we ever produced. the darker stuff is tasty too. Each boil produces it own color and flavor. Every year we seem to learn more and get better at this.
