For sure! And there's lots of stuff we do with these delicious peppers; Guac, marinades, dips, mojos, tacos etc. But nothing beats a big spicy garden pepper on labour day weekend, stuffed with cream cheese and wrapped in smokey bacon, slow roasted on the 'q.

Oh no, hungry bunnies can be the worst! Our fox population has kept them at bay recently, but the deer are this years issue now. My Mother in law ties bars of soap to her apple and pear trees trying to keep them at bay. Short of employing a 20' fence or a full-time guard-dog I don't know what would stop them. 🤣

Make sure you get the painted stones in the strawberries when the flowers start to open. That gives the birds plenty of time to find out they cant eat them. Everything loos looks great. The garlic scapes can be used just like you would green onion. Milder flavour than cloves of garlic so great in salads and such. Raw or fried in butter....🤤

We totally missed the boat on the stones and the flower timing. Wasn't expecting berries this year so it was a pleasant surprise to get any (and they were delicious), but absolutely next year the second we see a flower those "berries" are going in for the birds 😆. Thank you for the scapes tip! The green-onion comparison is a perfect way to think of it. Also, never thought of the salad side; going to try that tonight 😋

Thank you! It is yeah, but we were a couple days late on the stones getting out. One thing that did BREAK MY HEART and wasn't in the video; the brazen destruction and removal of three jalapeño plants (with peppers on them) but some deer yesterday afternoon. Went out there to find 1/4 stems and nothing else. 🌶😭🌶😭🌶😭

Jay your garden beds look great 👍 and I love how high that u shaped one is. I don't know if you have enough space to plant enough of something to possibly get into canning someday. Maybe a ground garden at that point. 🤔 I like the idea of the boat cover I believe if you want to ruin something leave it out in the weather. Happy gardening I know you'll enjoy everything that offers you

Thanks Joe! The U shaped bed is awesome on the back lol. This year it seems to be the new home for a couple of garter snakes... unsettling when your just weeding and out pops a head, but they are keeping the slugs, grubs, bugs and everything else away - so happy to have them around. As far as canning; I think we're a few years away from that. Every year we're making improvements to the garden and starting to really figure things out. Next year or the one after we'll likely expand. We can't dig down in this particular spot because it houses the geothermal loop under it, and one never really knows how close to the surface it could be during all the ground settling. It doesn't mind weight on it, but it sure doesn't want to be poked full of holes. But we've lots of room for more raised beds in the area - and I suppose we could put a big garden elsewhere (but I like to keep everything in its place, so that might drive me crazy). Hope the weather is treating you well, and happy fourth of July to you!

Thanks Chris! We'll see how the stones work.. they keep fooling me - the amount of times I've been excited only to find it's not a berry Who knows if it would work on chipmunks? Guess if they aren't too persistent and learn early on they're not berries, maybe they'd leave them alone by the time things get ripe. Sugar shack is still in the works my friend! But my life is honestly a never-ending circle of having to start and complete three or four projects every-time I start a new one ha. I'd hazard a guess the maple setup will be one of the last projects of the summer, and finish up just in time for the snow. Happy fourth of July to you guys!

nice garden. have you considered planting your potatoes in containers? like 10 or 20 gallon pots? No hilling and no digging.
@simplewoodslife
@simplewoodslife 12 күн бұрын
Our original plans for potatoes was a barrel or tower, and then we moved to the idea of a flat bed for ease of harvest. They're doing so well here that I think we could plant them pretty much anywhere. I do like the idea of various other locations to grow loads more (there is an Irish stereotype for this fella about potato consumption that holds true), so we couldn't really ever have "too many". Maybe next year we'll look at the bed plus containers and do some A-B testing. Going to have to find another place for the corn regardless, could also integrate some potato pots.🥔🥔

Hope you have cooler days in the future.

They say "it's not the heat, it's the humidity" and geeze louise they aren't joking around. I have no issue with the heat, and love it (we only get it for a few short months)... but I also love spring, where over a period of time the body can acclimate to increasing temperatures. We were in a hoodie Sunday night and sleeping in the basement Monday night. That was spring.

Hey Jay it's nice to transplant trees and so rewarding when they take root. It sounds like you're living in fear with all the bugs and tics and bears 🐻 my suggestion is to get free ranging chickens for the tics ( like a dozen ) and it's been my experience That black bears 🐻 want nothing to do with humans unless you have a sandwich in your pocket 😅
@simplewoodslife
@simplewoodslife 21 күн бұрын
Thanks Joe! Not living in fear no lol, but blacklegged ticks have become a pretty serious issue this way and their numbers are increasing to a point where our Province has put out some pretty dire info regarding their numbers.. I've had to pull so many off of me, and they're gross.. 🤢. I love the idea of chickens (and still working on Ms. Lady for that one 🤣), but with acres and acres of forest, If we let them out in the woods where I'm usually at, I'm sure they'd just become food for someone else. 🐺. We had a nuisance bear once, and they're just annoying. I don't actually think Bosco's going to attack me, but the one time I was hiking out in our woods with the youngest and we're in flip-flops of all things, that was the day we came across a cub in a tree - I was without anything to give me a hand should I inadvertently annoy or spook Momma. So I like to keep the spray close should anyone ever get too friendly. 😆🧸
