This Tallow Soap tutorial is a follow-up video on how to render tallow. In South Africa, it is traditionally known as Boerseep. A very easy and straightforward process and recipe to make a great bar of soap.
Recipe formulation:
90% Tallow
10% Coconut oil
Tallow is one of the few oils that can be used as a single oil in soap, 0% Superfat for Laundry or 5% Superfat for bath soap.

Should we have used something else? Will the smell improve with time? Lots of fun and still lots of Tallow to play with.

@@saponify6677I learned an interesting thing. My first attempt at rendering the Tallow from the fresh fat was a failure. I almost gave up. So I stuck it all in the freezer and the next day looked at your video again... I had followed your method perfectly. So I decided to give it another try. By this time the fay was frozen. This time, despite doing exactly the same again, it worked perfectly. My conclusion is that the freezing process is essential for rendering.

Hi Peace Ninja. Yes you can definitely shave with Tallow soap. The high Stearic acid content in the fatty acid profile of Tallow produces a lovely dense lather. Hi Fallon. Apologies for taking so long to reply, somehow your message slipped by. You can definitely use lard, Boerseep was made with any animal fat available to the farmers wives. I personally uses Tallow only because it is much cheaper than Lard. Just always run the recipe through a soap calculator to ensure you use the correct amount of lye, although as far as I remember the SAP values for Tallow and Lard are very close, if not the same.

Goeie dag. Ek is so bietjie besig met navorsing. Baie dankie
@saponify6677
@saponify6677 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Daisy en Mekaela. Daar is nie so iets soos n dom vraag nie. Ansa kzfaq.info/get/bejne/acuPpbZo29SbaGw.html

Castor oil will help but don't do more than 15%, you can use any oil high in lauric aid to boost bubbles, palm KERNEL oil or Babbaso oil is two popular ones, Babassu is not available where I live so I've never used it myself. And a tablespoon of powdered sugar per 500gram of oil will also boost bubbles.

@saponify6677
@saponify6677 Жыл бұрын
Hi Genevieve. For hardwater I would add a bit more coconut oil in the recipe, {I know boerseep is traditionally just lard or Tallow but coconut oil boosts the lather} coconut oil soap is more soluble than Tallow or Lard and the cleansing number will be higher, then I would use some citric acid as well to act as a chelator by binding to the minerals in the water to allow your soap to perform better. Here is a video on citric acid in soap. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/apOUn6monJfYdKM.html

Hi Marie, I prefer not to make Boerseep gel, it is very slimy, but if slimy doesn't put you off you basically make a Tallow liquid soap, you use Potasium Hydroxide to make a soap paste and then thin it to the desired thickness. I add about 5ml blousel to a 1.5kg Tallow recipe but it depends on how blue you want your soap to be. The recipes in my 43 year old book (So maak ons seep) calls for up to 50grams of Borax for every 2kg of fat. I hope that gives you some guidelines to work with. 🌿

@@vanessamaistry7757 Lard and Tallow have a similar fatty acid profile and If I remember correctly even the sap value is basically the same. You can play around and see what you like best. @saponify6677
@saponify6677 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. You are very welcome fellow South African 😀 100% Tallow soap doesn't make big bubbles but rather a foam (think shaving foam) the foam-ability does improve with time , I have some Tallow soap older than 10 years that outperforms my new soap, but if you want it to lather up easier and more you will have to tweak the recipe a bit. The odor depends very much on your method of rendering, wet rendering keeps the temperatures low, the meaty smell usually creeps in the moment the fat reaches temperatures where the sinew and meaty bits starts to crisp up during dry rendering. If you do make soap with a smell it will tone down and even dissappear over time. Here is the link to my wet rendering video, you can even use more water than what I've added to in this video, I just skimpt on water to be able to add more fat to the pot 😀 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fM-FeZeTmc26cas.html

Hi. Cold process soap is safe to use within 48 hours, but during the cure of four to six weeks soap loses moisture and soap crystals keep forming on a microscopic level and keeps on improving. I would not package it before 4 weeks, especially if you wrap your soap, it could still shrink in size as it loose moisture and then your wraps becomes "rattle fit" or the band slides down. 🌿🌷🌿

Hi Fallon, no question is a silly question, and you are always welcome to ask. Yes you can use different animal fats in soap, there will be differences in smell and colour, and the fatty acid profiles wil also differ slightly. For example. Tallow: Stearic Acid 22% Oleic acid 36% Lard: Stearic acid 13% Oleic acid 46% Meaning Tallow is a little bit more creamy and Lard a little more moisturising. If you haven't watched my soap calculator video yet it might help you choose between them. For me it usually ends up to cost effectiveness, Tallow is 3 times cheaper than Lard where I live. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/acuPpbZo29SbaGw.html

Hi Gerhard. Ek weet jy kan Rendered Lard (Uitgekookde varkvet) by Foodlovers koop.

Hi there. The lye depends on how much of each oil you use. In all my my video descriptions I type out the formulation in percentages to make it easy to scale the recipe up or down, below that you will find a link like this one, if you click on it it will open the recipe in Soapmaking Friend where you can adjust the mold sizes to your requirements.
@saponify6677
@saponify6677 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Japie. Anders giet in enkel vorms.

I bought some tallow from a soap making supplier in Jhb, but is has a weird smell. I was hoping that it wouldn't come through in the finished product, but the soap has a 'sweaty' smell!!! What do I do to sort it out please
@saponify6677
@saponify6677 Жыл бұрын
Hi Shirley. It I best to render your own Tallow, I prefer wet rendering to keep any smells to minimum. Adding water to the rendering process keeps the max temperature to the lower side, the meaty bits doesn't have enough heat to crisp up in the oil adding to the "meaty" smell. With this batch just give it some time, the smell might still mellow out over time. You can also add some essential or fragrance oil at trace to your soap to mask some of it. I like to add some peppermint essential oil to mine. Citrus scents also smells nice but I've found that they lose their fragrance fast, citrus just doesn't stick around for long by themselves.

Hi there. I prefer to do wet rendering when I render my Tallow. By adding water to the pot you limit the temperature to 100⁰C and prevent the meaty bits in the fat to crisp up, it is the meaty bits that increase the meaty smell. Here is a video on how I do wet rendering. Hope this help. 🌿 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fM-FeZeTmc26cas.html

Hello!! After render the tallow you can infuse it with rosemary at 40oC, no more, overnight. That helps a little. I do it that way and I love rosemary. The same with lard. Greetings!!
