"𝗪𝗵𝘆 are the animals in an 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲?"
"𝗪𝗵𝘆 can't they simply be 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱?" are common questions/misunderstandings that I receive.
This video is an answer to those questions, because the problems and reasons displayed in this video are not only applicable to 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗮𝘄𝘀 but in fact are true for 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹𝘀 that find themselves in sanctuaries, worldwide. 🐍🐅🦅🦜 🌎
Curious how I got to volunteer with Macaws and lots of other amazing animals in Costa Rica? Just send me a message on Instagram (@matthias.pav) or Facebook (Matthias Páv). I'll do my best to answer your specific questions about wildlife volunteering and share tips on visiting this sanctuary.
Knowing I've inspired action truly makes my day!
I want to be clear that this video is 𝗻𝗼𝘁 a judgement towards parrot owners. It is true that the parrot trade, early on (60's-70's), had to be sourced in the wild and that this played a big part in the decline of many bird species. However, the parrots in circulation today are (almost exclusively) coming from legal breeders and the owners' love and care for their animal is something I can appreciate. Besides, the wildlife trade is now for many animals unfortunately the only way to keep their numbers up. Is this humans trying to make up for their past mistakes, I'll let you decide.

Although this video is about Great Green Macaw (Ara ambiguus), also known as the Buffon's macaw or the Great Military Macaw, there are some images in the video of their smaller cousin the military macaw, since the Great Green Macaw is extremely rare and not many videos and photos of them exist.

Editing for KZfaq, especially if you do it yourself and speaking in a non-native language is really hard! Great work putting this piece together. Great Green Macaws are one of our most cherished species of Macaw at Flight Club Foundation. In fact, the illegal trade out of Columbia brought a Great Green from the Darien Gap to the United States in a smuggling ring. My friend began a reintroduction program in the Darien Gap and now 12 pairs are successfully raising chicks. It's been a 30 year program almost nearing its end. My question is in regard to numbers. I know Costa Rican Great Green and Ecuadorean Great Greens are really the last two strongholds, is my understanding. Down to hundreds left? My understanding is there are a few thousand left, but the increased pressure from colonization is really the biggest issue (deforestation). I also know the local pet trade is a serious issue since the birds are available and the people are living right there. The devastation I saw in that sattelite image was profound and needs to be shared far, far, far more. I work with Dr. George Olah, PhD and his work discovering the root causes of worldwide parrot decline. In addition, I know Janice Boyd is an avid Great Green advocate. I did not see the name of your sanctuary, perhaps I missed it? I

Thank you for appreciating the efforts i’ve put in making this video. It took me quite a lot of time researching and understanding all the intricacies of Great Green Macaw conservation. Regarding the number of remaining Great Green Macaws, it is indeed not easy to assess exact population densities across central America. The numbers that I am referring to are based on multiple sources, both from the internet and from people that are running this facility (the Natuwa Sanctuary). I do confess It might not be completely accurate, considering not even the experts seem to know. I do know there are more Great Green Macaws towards the East of Costa Rica but further than that I wouldn’t dare make precise estimations. If you know more I’de love to hear it!

Awesome video, One question....You mentioned that the parrots are to comfortable with humans and lost their natural instincts to survive in wild, so when they are breed how do the babies learn survival skills if parents can't teach them ?

Hello, thank you, i appreciate that. Firstly, these macaws might be too comfortable with humans but since no interaction with them is allowed at the sanctuary, they learned that they will get nothing in return if they search for contact. Thereby, they will be less likely to seek out humans, once released. Secondly, rehabilitation is a complicated process that I don't even fully know yet. I do know that if they release 1 macaw in a wild flock, this macaw will learn the correct behavior from the wild once. Rehabilitation is an intensive, costly and sometimes risky process, that is why it's so difficult. Thank god, there are places like this sanctuary.

Domesticated is probably not the correct term to emphasize 🤔 Believe five generations is the rule, they do meet a lot of the criteria for it though.

😔I try to give local domesticated macaws a better life. But most are alone and seek human contact. I'm very upset with what humans have done and how hard some of us work to fix it while others continue. 😕

It is...not. Thought long and hard on the title, but couldn't decide what would be best for to attract viewers (which I do not have many of as you can see) Until a friend jokingly suggested this title which made me laugh a bit and decided to simply go with that. I'm from Belgium, we're not too involved in American politics so I do not have the same sentiment that an American would have upon hearing this title. The simple fact you decided to click on my video just for the title makes me think i shouldn't change it actually.😏If you learned a little something about these endangered animals that's all that matters to me really. These birds have no voice (unlike the loud and obnoxious Trump).

@@MatthiasPav No, I think this title is enough to attract the American attention I think you are seeking. To me, it's perfect.
