Hi everyone ! I've become a big fan of Matthias videos, I'm expecting new ones every friday. This channel is my official source of knowledge for new ideas and techniques. It's interesting not only for copying the projects but also extracting ideas, such as this great lenght adjust mechanism, simple and effective. Keep on feeding us Matthias ... Saludos from Chile !

I watch a lot of your videos, Mr. Wandell as they are very interesting. I showed a couple of flat-pack furniture videos to my Mom, particularly the flat pack dresser and computer desk. She said you should find a way to mass produce them, but I said you sell your plans online and that you have been burned once by a toy company, my condolences on that and your Dad's passing. I would imagine your Dad and my Grandpa on my Dad's side would have gotten along quite well as they were both very resourceful and creative.

I had to do something like this once but I cheated and cut the angles out on the table saw then glued them up as a three piece to make it work, it worked very well and was very clean looking.

It's funny that the same four teen people that disliked the first tripod video watched the second one and disliked it. Some people are just ridiculous. I view every video of yours and have come to understand and use your methods. Keep em coming good sir.

A router plane would be good for cleaning up the bottom of the dovetail channel.
@valimel9 жыл бұрын
second?, :), nice idea to make a stop block for a table sled, making the slot directly in the fence.
@mksdesigner9 жыл бұрын
Actually I think tilting the router bit to get slot with 30 degree side wall is not a bad idea. You might end up with diamond shape cross-session but much cleaner slot bottom. That also saves you several passes of cutting.

You could also make the first part out of two pieces and the second part out of three pieces, glue them together and use a staple gun to hold them tight. But making the pieces on the table saw might be a bit dangerous.

I'm thinking a hex head bolt and a matching wooden knob like the one for the nut instead of the bolt used to lock the tripod would be better for preventing damage to the slots.

@erikhemmingsson11887 жыл бұрын
I used a sliding dovetail to build my my easel, along with counterweights and pulleys to push it up and down without too much effort. Works really well.
@jaredj6319 жыл бұрын
Oh I miss read it I thought it said triple slide dovetail, I think you could make a telescopic setup like that.

A clever solution as always. But unsure why you couldnt have done less cuts on the table saw but using a router to remove the bulk of the middle .

Matthias Wandel It looks like it slides well now. Any problems with swelling in weather? I'm thinking of using this for my outdoor chicken coop to make a sliding gate. My current system swells a bit, so that matters quite a lot.
@matthiaswandel9 жыл бұрын
Adam Hill The wood will swell as much as wood swells - dovetail or not. But I wouldn't use that sort of design outdoors.
@Gunchulis9 жыл бұрын
What are your thoughts on using no powertools for a project? Would a wooden tripod would be possible with the same functionality more or less?
@bradley35499 жыл бұрын
Matthias, any thoughts on starting with two pieces for the female dovetail and just gluing them together? Seems like it would be easier to get a nice consistent floor in the slot.
@JohnSmith-ki2eq9 жыл бұрын
Bradley Weingartner That's how I've done it in the past, a base and two sides glued together to make one unit.
@AdamHill429 жыл бұрын
Bradley Weingartner Isn't it better to do this way, however? You can do test fits in between cuts, as Matthias did, therefore ensuring a good fit. Also, rotating the piece 180° between cuts makes sure the slot is 100% symmetric and centered!
@bradley35499 жыл бұрын
Adam Hill I think symmetry is easily done with either process, but it's much much easier to have a nice flat clean floor using a two-piece method (when using a table saw as opposed to a router or shaper with appropriate tooling anyway.) Even with all the hand chisel work on the center, the portion recessed under the dovetail remains fairly rough which I think ultimately detracts from any possible benefit from single piece construction. My only concern with a two-piece might be strength of the glue joint - but considering the high surface area and relatively low stress I'm guessing it's not an issue.
@AdamHill429 жыл бұрын
That's true -- I hadn't considered the fact that the chisel can't really get under the dovetail shoulder. I still think it's tough to get the sizing just right with a two-piece method, but I'm willing to concede it has its benefits. I hate gluing in general, since I don't have many clamps (yet!) :P
