Multi use tool for daily use depending on your job, hobby, or other activities.
Use it to rough check your tire pressure by hearing the tone.
Use it for humanly dispatching fish, whether out deep-sea fishing or hauling in a huge northern pike up through a hole in the ice...
Whatever you use it for, here's how to make them on a wood lathe.
I make two in this video, one from cherry wood and the other from bacote.
Also, seen briefly in this video is my daily driver, a nice mid size truck that was just videoed for the KZfaq channel: / @awesomecarsforever

I was issued with a wooden truncheon, a smaller version of what you’ve made here, when I joined the police in the UK (a very long time ago…). Of course modernity came along and they were replaced by friction-lock batons and so on…but when I retired a wood turning colleague made me one as a retirement gift and it now has pride of place in my display cabinet. A good little film, thank you.

Wow..I was always wondering how you were tough enough to enter the streets without a gun on your hips. I served as a policemean from 1985 in Berlin West. Living in Spandau I was surrounded by britsih barracks and a met lots of Tommys in wash centers and Pubs. I assume you had not have a gun problem in the seventies and eighties as we have it now, but you must have been very couraged to leave your station without firearms.

Tools used, thoughts, unexpected issues and the excitement of looking at the finished piece. As if I was standing there too. The wood used for your 'thumpers' was a great choice and looks amazing. I was making one in High school shop class. As I pulled it from the machine I had a brief chance to admire it. The teacher took it. He said as far as the ones he had to confiscate mine was one of the better ones. Nice work

Amazing job! I haven’t seen burning the glue before. I have to echo woottootzoot’s comment. Stumpy nubs showed that his hand got so damaged and the swelling was instant that he had to get his ring sawn off of his finger so he didn’t lose the finger. Please remove all metal. You just need your tool to snap back once, crack your finger or hand hard and the swelling could happen too fast to get the rings off. God Bless you!!! Around here they are known as “fish bats”, but thumper works well too! Love how confident you are with turning your beads. Nice bats!

I saw an aluminum thumper meant for self defense that had three sections threaded together. The manufacturer wouldn't even show it thumping a durable target. I like your wood idea a lot better.

On old English sailing vessels they were called "thole pins", when used for dispatching fish or small game they are known as " a priest", but " thumper" is cool, fascinating watching you craft them.

As i watch this, I am remined of an uncle of mine who was a NYC cop. He had a set of night sticks, four? made of Lignum Vieta. The stories I hear say they worked well.

one of the first things my dad made on his brand new Shopsmith (back in the late 80's) was a walnut "fish whacker" for me. I loved that thing, I was always flipping it end over end in my hands, behind the back, etc. Then some sleezebag from my first job stole it out of my coat.

Awesome video. Really like the pieces you created. Will have to add that to my list of items to make. It reminds me of when we did training with the British Royal Marines their SgtMaj of the Marine Corps carried around a swagger stick a little longer and slightly smaller in diameter. Fuuny I should find this podcast because I had just made 2 tire thumpers and when disclsoed it to my friends they had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. Many of the thumpers looked like very small bats, so they may be used for other things. I was pleased to see your designs though. Thanks for sharing.

Nice two things I like machining and wood working. Not to mention that handy dandy tool you made. I used to keep one like that in my vehicles back when I was younger and police officers always would say what do you plan on using that for and I'd always say, " Stray if I break down and have to walk".

Liked your thumper segment. I’ve also made many thumpers over the years with about every type of wood I could get my hands on: Cherry, oak, black walnut, ash and sassafras to name a few. I keep the ash one next to my bed…..it keeps bad tires at bay!

Funny you should demo these Thumpers. Our wood turning club (KC Woodturners) has been tasked with making 200 of these batons for our local police department. They will all be numbered and engraved with the officers name. They all must be exactly the same. Great project.

We call 'em fish bats! We get some pretty big fish, some with teeth, up here in Canada like the Musky and Northern Pike (Jack fish) and Sturgeon. Personally, I use a hammer on the treads on my truck, but the result is the same. Cheers from Alberta, Canada.

I have one I made from Eucalyptus. I made for dispatching baby seals I saw on the discovery channel. Since there’s no baby seals where I live I keep it for shop lifters or car jackers.

Spindle turned cherry is always interesting. I made a pepper mill out f Cherry from my parents' yard, and it includes some sap wood. So fun to just look at.

I love watching these videos. Always surprised at the endings. I really had no idea what a thumper was. When it started to take shape, I thought it was some kind of weird baseball bat. Lol. But the explanation made sense. Now I can see why you wouldn't want to use soft pine for this. I could see them used for more than "checking tires." A real "intimidator" if you needed one. Anyway, it was a great project with awesome grain in that darker wood.

Those thumpers work great for doing quick tire checks. Did you know they can also be used to give a nice scalp massage to an angry or unruly person? It calms them right down if done properly.

Nice looking grain on the dark one. I’ve heard that some guys drill holes into the ends and add a few ounces of lead for better results. 😮

Here we call those tire billies! Old truckers thump the trailer tires with them to check for low air pressure by the sound it makes!👍

That bacote wood was just stunning 😮😮 would make an awsome knife handle 😊😊in my neck of the woods we call those billy clubs most local truckers have them as do alot the fishermen/women i currently have a nice stainless steel and tungsten engraved one with copper inlays sitting on my head board ❤❤

Bacote really would make nice knife scales, it's super easy to work with. Tungsten with copper inlays sounds really nice!

My "knocker" is a hardwood spindle from Pendleton Woolen Mills. It works nice for a quick check on that inside dually tire. And I don't need to look that verse up! It's one of the first verses I memorized years ago!

I don’t have a lathe, but I’ve made several of these from natural woods like hickory, persimmon, and oak. Persimmon is beautiful and my handles are bark left on the stick. Someone ask me once, “What do you hit with this?” I replied, “Anything you would like that needs adjusting.” You need a piece of red cherry from the southeast. That would be gorgeous.

I used to have a small one that looked more like a miniature baseball bat. My truck driving uncle called it a tire buddy. I kept it in between my driver side door and the seat.

Watches rings and bracelets have no place around machinery period! After being in the HVAC elect and plumbing business for almost 40 years I have seen injuries related to accessories being worn that would make most people throw up at the sight. It's just not worth it no matter how good you are at your craft.

Incredibly disappointed this isn’t how to make an M79 40mm grenade launcher colloquially known as thumpers. But the end product looked really nice and relieved my disappointment.
