Colt's been producing its iconic Model of 1911 semi-automatic pistol for more than a century, but making the modern Colt M1911 is a bit different than what it took to create the classic. Today's Colt M1911 is a reflection of what shooters want in a gun. Watch our "American Rifleman Television" feature segment above to learn about making a modern Colt.
One of Colt's first steps in modernizing its line was to craft the Competition Pistol, a dedicated design that was built for the competition circuit and drew inspiration from the Colt M45, which had been modernized and was adopted by the United States Marine Corps in 2012. Many of the features found on the M45 were incorporated into the Competition Pistol, which soon became a standout in the Colt lineup.
"While that product lived standalone for some period of time, what we quickly discovered was if we took the dual-spring recoil system from that, for instance, the wide serrations, take that upswept beavertail and use that across the line, take the G10 grips and use those across the line, and we started walking through each area of the 1911 lineup and taking those things and applying them to it," said Justin Baldini, Colt's production director. "It started with the Competition Pistol because we really didn't have anything in our lineup for somebody who was going to go shoot IDPA on Saturday. This was the gun where they could walk in, they could pick it up on Friday night and be ready to shoot on Saturday and be competitive with it."
Colt also focused on its offerings that were built for law-enforcement and military use, and one of the upgraded designs was the Colt Competition Unit, a gun loaded with features designed for professional use. The gun's stainless-steel construction was finished with an all-black ion-bond finish that reduced its visual signature. Additionally, the front strap was checkered, and the mainspring housing incorporated a funneled magazine well for easy reloads. The gun also featured an ambidextrous safety, cocking serrations at the front and rear, a Novak fixed rear sight, a tritium-illuminated front sight, National Match barrel and a dual-recoil spring system.
"Colt has a great relationship with law enforcement and military ever since it began," said Mark Redl, Team Colt shooter. "This is the latest version of a gun that was designed and built specifically for operators, with the help of Daryl Holland, who is on our pro staff. We built the gun that has the features that he looked for when he was in the military."
Of course, despite the many changes in the Colt lineup over the last few years, Colt still sells its tried-and-true 1911 Classic.
"If I took the name 'John Browning' and 'Colt' and put them together, the first thing that should come to mind is the 1911," Redl said. 'This gun, the way it is and the feature set on it, is almost the same as it was back in 1911. There are a couple changes that the military did over the years, a couple scallops here. We've put a little higher visibility sights on it to make it more user-friendly, because lets face it, if I buy it today, I want to use it. The great thing about this gun is the blued steel. It's made from forgings, forged frame, forged slide, walnut double-diamond stocks. When you see this gun, there's no doubt in your mind that you're looking at a Colt 1911."
The use of forged components combined with attention-to-detail in the gun's construction is what makes Colt handguns special, according to Spitale.
"When you talk to gun builders, some of the biggest and brightest names in our industry, their love of Colt guns is special," he said. "There's many people out there that talk about the value of a gun or the strength of the steel, but many of those gun builders, they like nothing better than to get their hands on Colt steel and be able to work on a Colt 1911. I like the fact that very few companies can do that the way we can, that we build a different gun using U.S. forged steel. They're stronger, they hold up, they're very accurate guns right out of the box, and to have that reputation of quality in our industry is something special, and not everybody has that platform to build from."

Colt is American. All companies have ebb & flow but poor Colt has had non-gun, investment corporate management for decades and has lost its public innovation. Much innovation occurred inside the factory and they failed to capitalize on it via public relations. Most American love Colt and do not want one that is affordable, they want one that is old-school righteous.

I used to live and work in Stratford, CT and I had a lots of friends who was a long time gun maker, Colt used to sell their products to employee under discount program. Colt produced a High Quality Firearms back in 1948 where my friends build Pre Series 70 with s/n with C prefix. I have collected Mark VI series when the cost per gun was $90.00 and MSRP was $180.00 during Bi-Centennial cerebration of 1976. My Series 70 is now running a flat spring. So far so good. Don't think it does much but that spring runs on a full length guide rod. That barrel collet people "warned me" about is still functioning perfectly. One of my favorite things about the gun is having a 1911 with something most people have never seen.
@TheWilferch
@TheWilferch Жыл бұрын
The series 70 has an urban legend ( or true?) reputation for having a finger-style collet bushing prone to breaking. In my view this is unwarranted and not true. HOWEVER, it CAN be exercised to fail if the take down for cleaning forces the tight fingers over the fatter part of the barrel ....to remove it from the barrel. Even for cleaning, there is no real reason to force the "fingers" of the bushng over the front-end of the barrel for removal. It can be slid fore-and-aft on the barrel without removal and everything can be cleaned this way without forcing a removal. I have my Series 70 since 1978 and have never had a bushing failure....yet folklore says it happens all the time. Maybe so....for the guys that force the unit off the front of the barrel.

@@jameswilson1407 Not true sir. They are owned b y CZ (who has had their share of corporate manufacturing problems, like all manufacturers) because of non-gun investors who have used the world-wide recognized Colt name to make a quick turnaround without future investment in the company. They are THE world-class recognized name in firearms. The Glock attorney said several years ago that he wished Glock had the name recognition of Colt. Colt has been very responsive to its largest customer - The U. S. Military. Military contracts have prevented Colt from seeing its internals innovation reach the commercial marketplace.

Depends on use I guess. I have a decommissioned M45A1 that was used by operators and it has more room between the slide and frame than my WWI 1911 and certainly more than my custom Nighthawk 1911. When I got the M45A1 fully disassembled, there was some sand and dirt in it from the pistol's time in the Iraq or Afghanistan. My custom Nighthawk 1911 that has no gaps would malfunction if it had the same sand in it. That said, I can shoot the M45A1 just as well as my Nighthawk.

@@HipsterTactical There are more consistent manufacturers though, and I would rather not support companies that support tyrants. For example, where I'm at even the 1911 is an illegal prohibited item to own in your own home without excessive bribes, you simply can't own one without a huge amount of bribes. Alright, well I guess the cops and Sherriff are disarmed too right? Nope... They are authorized to have: Colt M-16 A4 Fully Automatic with 10.5 or 14.5 barrel Colt 9mm Sub-Machine_Gun (doesn't specify, I'd like to know what it is though) H & K MP5, 9mm H & K G36, .223 Caliber (WHY do they need a G36?!?) and a couple more Colt models. Problem is, they are supporting the boots stomping on our faces, when its illegal to keep a hand pewpew in our own home, let alone bear one. If they keep supporting that, who are they going to sell to? Eventually they will be illegal for all civilians, which maybe that's their twisted goal. But they shouldn't sell full auto's to departments, if we the people can't have it, then even a pointy stick is too much for government to be using against the people.

Why spring life is even an issue these days is a good question. Do you know that all poppet valve internal combustion engines have valve springs in them? Do you have any idea how many compression cycles they go through just to drive to the grocery store? Do you know what those valve springs are made of? It's chrome silicone spring steel, and they are available for guns, check with Wolf Springs or Brownells.

Any of the Big 4 will make high-end premium grade 1911. Wilson, Ed Brown, Les Baer, or Nighthawk. They all make great, hand fitted, 1911s. They differ in build philosophy. Les Baer builds no frills, pure 1911, no nonsense social work pistols. No French borders, no fluted barrel hoods, no flat topping, no 40 LPI checkering on the rear of the slide with matching extractor head, no bushingless cone barrels with reverse crowns. Wilson has a lot of these fru fru features. And the price reflects the hand labor. Ed Brown is somewhere in the middle. Very clean and pure form 1911 but with a lot silkier feel. EB's Executice series would feel right at home with a Rolex and Brook brothers suit and tassled loafers. But make no mistake, they make some serious social work pistols too. Their Special Forces 1911 is all business, which would be just right for an SF colonel to put into his kit bag or slide under his dinner jacket to attend an embassy cocktail as the ambassadorial attache.

Just slip an extra Wilson 8 rounder magazine in your back pocket. Or an extra 10 rounder or two in the pouch. Most double stack 9mm mag pouches will hold 2 1911 single stack mags.

Staccato is the new colt. Colt, historically has been one of the most important companies for modern small arms development. As of recently, attempting to discontinue non contract sales and even more recent, tragically abysmal CQ issues combined with the unwillingness to innovate has turned many people including myself and my customers away from colt products. Where colt has failed, companies like STI/staccato, infinity fireams, atlas gunworks etc etc have taken the 1911 platform to new heights. These companies offer the quality that you used to expect from colt and then some while innovating and pushing the envelope on what the 1911 platform could be. Ironically sam colt and John browning were innovators, always looking for the next big breakthrough in design. You are absolutely diluted if think either one would be satisfied if they knew the 1911 as remained relatively unchanged for over 100 years while their names are used as a greedy cash grab.

When I was getting into guns in the mid 2000s the Colt website was like a wet blanket, it seemed like they only made 1911s for retired cops and boomers.. Maybe I'm older now (29) but I can see myself owning virtually every 1911 they make in 2023. The Delta, Gold Cup, Commander and 1911C are all exactly how I imagine them being put together for their respective philosophies and uses. IMO the Delta is THE 10mm pistol and I'll get one soon

Last time I checked they still didn’t have the slide fit of a Ruger or for that matter a Rock Island. They should either lead on fit and finish or get out of 1911s. Also they should get rid of the failure prone series 80 lock works completely especially with California’s handgun roster being overturned, only Kimber and Taurus use a firing pin safety for the most part. If a company as big as S&W or Ruger starts production of a 1911 and decides there’s no need for it, I mean Colt produced it for over 70 years without one. Colt seems to forget the terrible 1911s they made in the late 80s with common mistakes on pinhole position and Brittle slides. I have no problems bragging a little but admit their past mistakes and above all tell the truth and make customer service and warranty a top priority. I do give Colt some points for their reintroduction of the Python and Anaconda. But how about some advancements in the history of those revolvers, say a 10mm Python on its 41 caliber frame or a Anaconda in 45 Winchester magnum which is rated for magnum loads instead of the past chambering of 45 Colt. Both chamberings could use full moon clips making them better combat revolvers. Also neither were ever made in 5” barrels, the prime length for a revolver, unlike the 1911,the SAA at least were made in 4 3/4”. Give us a match grade 1 “ to 1 1/2” accurate Gold Cup in 9mm(ick), 45acp and 10mm in 5”. For the same $1,499 as a Python as well. You could call the 10mm a Gold Cup Trophy Hunter. Make the fit and finish immaculate with no sharp edges( light dehorning) and above all make all your Premier handguns available in both stainless and Royal Blue. If today’s Colt can’t reproduce a Royal Blue they Aren’t really Colt.

I wish colt cared about their QC. I just bought a Dan Wesson over a colt due to the F&F on the guns. My grandfathers 1990 colt custom carry commander example looks like the gun was made with a hammer and an angle grinder. Terrible F&F. Same with newer firearms (QC, not necessarily F&F with modern machinery).

I dont think the Colt name has meant much in a good long while. Like others i hope CZ can change that. Cant justify $800 on basic 1911 if quality isn't there. I see the Tisas 1911 go as low as $350 new supposedly forged frame and slide. I dont mind paying a premium but only if it is worth it.

I'm not an operator. I just work in customer service using a phone head set. Can i use that operator Colt as well? I think the 1911C, the C is for crap. Colt has been crap since the 1970s-1989s-1990's, and hopefully CZ can roll some heads on the bean counters and crack down on QC.

This is all science fiction, the only Colts are the ones in this video. There hasn't a Colt product in any of the local gun stores in years. I hunted for a year for a Colt lightweight commander and finally lost interest. I was hoping when CZ bought them it would turn them around, nothing yet.

I grew up on a series 70 colt with my uncle teaching me. He was a nuclear sub tech with a lifetime service. I cannot count the hundreds we spent getting his .45 to run on ball ammo. I recommended a Delta Elite to a friend and I've been the fool... Meanwhile: I bought a Tisas B45R for so cheap I can't even say (F U KZfaq) and the thing refuses to stop. Out of the box, that Turkish made little plinker has earned my respect. Even my wimpy, wadcutter reloads cycle... When Turkey is making a better 1911 than Colt I know that something needs to change...

Hopefully, CZ will crack the whip on Colts QC like they did with Dan Wesson 1911s so Colt can be competitive with Dan Wesson and other companies. Colt finally started using CNC machines in the early 2000s. Prior to that, Colt's QC was poor. Harsh machine swirl marks, parts that don't fit right, slide to frame fit wirh serious under bite and over bite, just shameful levels of assembly. Springfield Armory has beaten Colt in Quality Control. SA used to make garbage 1911s in the 1990s when I worked in a gun shop. We returned tons of them. Horrible fit and finish. SA cracked down and now produce well made and well fitted 1911s even at their basic GI models.
