Making Trolleys For The Narrow Gauge Workshop Railway. (Or Are They Dollies?)

The railway is still only half the length of the barn, but that’s still long enough for some fun with a little flat-bed trolley (bogey?).
Thanks to Finn, Rosie and Mike for testing, and the donkeys for their appreciation.

Kind of brings up the feeling of amazing that must have come with the first passenger railways in the 1830's. Almost feel you could sell tickets, not quite Space-X around the moon, but there is a delight & inherent pleasure in something so elegantly simple & useful.

You have the absolute essesence of railroading and why they were invented. Put two trolleys with pivots under each end of a platform and you have a flat car. Make a bunch hook them together and tow them with a donkey and you have a railroad. All the rest is detail. My step father built a miniature amusement park railroad in the 1950s. It used small gasoline engines to haul up to 30 kids in several cars. As soon as I was big enough I did the maintainence and, as the things were simple, there was a lot, when I was about 8yo. By 14 i was doing all the work while himself drank himself into a stupor. It was amazing that a kid could push a thousand pound engine by myself. Railroads still fascinate me. Amusement parks not so much.

@@WayOutWestx2 I live near a scrap yard where I can free roam and there's quiet a few cars of the same make so I'll try to get the whole front wheel hub assembly so I can just bolt on and off the rotors, should only be $10 Aud, just need something for the rail.

it's easy to push because the wheel made from solid & will not flat. If the wheel made from rubber, it'll flat if a heavy load applied & make a drag. It's like your car. if you car wheel is flat, your engine will be struggle & the fuel consumption increase. It because the drag from the flatten wheel

I think it has more to do with it being on rails. I've pushed a wheelbarrow with a solid wheel and it was much harder than pushing one with an air filled tire on the ground.

Great progress! -the trolley wheels seem to be riding on the edge of the flange when going over the concrete section. maybe deepen the groove using a masonry disc fitted to your grinder?

You're right - and I only noticed as I edited the video. It' s mostly loose grit in the channel - but, yes, deepening it will help.

I've never heard of 15in gauge in ireland. Having done some research the only operating 15in is the Difflin railway which only opened in 2003. The standard for narrow gauge in Ireland is 3ft, every other narrow gauge were only ever used once.

So simple and works, all you need now is a small locomotive. chuff chuff........... a battery and an electric motor and speed controller... then your off on your travels.

a late friend of mine used paint pot lids and other bits to make his train wheels. ( live steam= miniture railways .) good job. job done . :)

That with the tree will only really work, if you can get your wife an relatives off the wagons, unless you plan on sawing them :)

The taper of the wheels guides the wheels not the flanges, the flanges just act as a way to stop the wheel from going off the track.

Yep, people don't understand that the more ground contact a wheel has the more friction it causes, the harder it is to move.

You may want to weld the wheels to the axles to properly make use of the bevel on the thread.

They are welded on one trolley, and stuck on with locktite on the other

Well it is 15 inch gauge so perhaps a Cagney style locomotive would do the trick. Provided it's not heavy enough to destroy the tracks and he can actually find one XD.

Even a homemade little “feldbahn” locomotive, with a small gas engine, you could make one from a lawn mower tractor. We had one that only had 3 1/2 horsepower, and that’s plenty on rails, it would loose traction long before it ran out of power.

are the wheels welded on the shaft or just loose..whats to stop them from sliding inwards on the track.. i can see they would stay in the groove in the floor.. but is that good enough for your project

Tim It is my understanding that the flanges of the wheels don't normally ride the rails. The wheels keep them selves centered due to the taper and the lack of a differential on train axles. For the wheels not to scuff along they will center themselves so that the diameter from wheel to wheel matches. When rolling around a curve the wheel/axle assembly will scooch over a tad so that the wheel on the outside of the curve is riding on a larger part of the wheel's taper and the wheel on the inside of the curve is riding on a smaller radius. That is what the tapers are all about, so I have been told. Just my 2 cents. Enjoy your videos! I have a few Outbackfoundry videos at Barry Luke. Check them out.

You're right, Barry - except the flanges must get used too, or they wouldn't be on there. On straight track the tapers would do the job on their own, but on rough ground, with tight bends, the flanges would definitely be needed too. (I think!) (Subbed your channel to see what you're up to..)

What Barry has said is right, but the flanges are there to help pervent any derailments, so they only touch the track at the last resort, eg, off level track or a too sharp of a bend. Hope this helps! :-)

Wheels lose contact with rails if frames are not flexible.

If its used for a headrig carriage you have to make sure the tracks are absolutely level or every error will be repeated in your saw cut & you want a very rigid carriage. For transport, yes you want suspension travel.

If you can get your hands on a decent priced lawn morrow or even a second hand one, you could ideally build a chain driven 0-4-0 mini locomotive. But you may need to swap out the gear box if you want to go backwards, or even just build on a mini turntable to the locomotive..... Good luck! Also, hello from Co. Down! Enterprising Rail Films, The exact thing you are talking about was done here in Florida back in the 1980s. The tractor donor was a brand new Yardman mower. It was a hydraulic drive and all you had to do was remove the stop on it and it would run as fast in reverse as it would going forward. Why the Yardman mower, you might ask. Because the whole mower was cheaper than just the drive direct from the maker. The result was a 2' gauge loco that could pull about 4 cars when you had two crew in the loco on flat track. And transportable on a single axle 5'x9' trailer behind a pickup truck.

I made 70 foot long, down hill, roller-coaster for my grandkids out of 1" PVC pipe. The wheels were 10" plastic wheels with the tires removed. I was going to fix the two rails to the ground with spikes, but found it was totally unnecessary. The rails bedded themselves to the ground by matting the grass down, and stood in place. Running the trolley wheels, flanges both sides, along the two roughly spaced pipes, easily set the rail spacing. Wouldn't this be a whole lot simpler and cheaper method of making a railway? The pipe could be larger, and the wheels could be of steel for extra weight if needed.

good idea for light-weight trolleys, but no good for anything else. The PVC would quickly deform under the pressure. (Unless it was filled with something - but how to fill 100 meters of narrow pipe..?)

Best if you don't make your frames too rigid. Without the ability to 'equalize' (flex) to maintain even pressure on each wheel, it is very easy to derail on uneven track, particularly in an area where the cross level relationship of the railheads changes quickly (it's called 'warp') from left to right. One wheel will lift off the rail, and once the wheel flange disengages from the rail, you're on the ground in an instant. Done it several times on the real RR. You MUST cross level your track before allowing equipment on it.

You're right, of course, Sarah. These trolleys work fine when there's weight on them but they ocasionally drift off the hollow part of the railway when they're empty. I'm making new wheels now for the outside tracks using the experience gained from these

The gauge of those Wheels look like it's a Narrow Gauge which is 2 foot gauge in America we have three foot Narrow Gauge and 2 foot gauge we do have an amusement park gauge which is 12 in gauge but they caught one foot scale. And then 24 inch gauge is another type of Narrow Gauge too and 36-inch gauge

The amusement park I helped build, as a kid, used 20 5/8 in gauge so everything was built to fit. Two and three ft gauges were usec as commercial railroads. Two foot in Maine and three ft in the West. Industrial railways used all sizes. One 18 in gauge railroad in England used bronze rails because it was in a gunpowder factory.
