Making Water after Rainwater Collection Fail

With the rainwater collection and storage system depleted, it's time to make water the old fashioned way. Turns out that melting snow is not a big deal, it certainly doesn't cost very much.
Don't get me wrong, its not that making water is my favourite thing, but there is a time and place, and peace of mind, to know that we can't easily be denied the water we need.

We had running water at the farm growing up - mom would send brother John to the well to bring a couple 5 gallon pails! when the well froze up, we also melted snow to do dishes, cook, do laundry and have baths - in one of those square galvanized tubs! As the oldest of 5, I was always the last to get in the tub. Fresher hot water was added after each kid, so I always had the most water, but it had washed 4 kids ahead of me! Good times!!

We used to make water that way for long weekends and stuff, and we'd have the pans on the stove, but also a bucket next to the fire to "pre warm". Speeds it up a bit. Out east though, we don't get so much precipitation some years. I think I'd want a bigger container.

You are some funny story teller. I like it. It’s a neat idea to bring the roof runoff into the house in the winter. As far as shoveling snow for water, one pound of snow equals one pound of water. So you will need more snow by volume of light fluffy mid winter snow while early and late winter (spring) the snow is more wet and you need less by volume. At the end, a pound is a pound.

Here your daughter is hauling snow into the house to melt it and put it in a big pot a second daughter hauling wood to fire the stove. All the while the water is melting off the roof and dripping to the ground all you needed to do was put the pot under the drip and leave for 10 minutes and it would be full. Now it make sense why the girls are so strong. You all do it the heard way just for exercise. Saves wear and tear on the gym equipment.

Drink only when you are super thirsty and give your body what it needs. I think what water is left in your body will be absorbed by the stools that need moisture to move in the bowels. Our stools do take moisture from our bladder if needed. So if you ration the water enough to keep you from dehydrating you could live a very long time I would think, but it would not be comfortable. I could live longer this way then no water at all. Of course one can get moisture from plants, but then there would be bowel issues. Just a thought.

personally i would have taken a solar panel, connected to some heat mats to put on the roof under the snow so in the winter months you can heat the snow on the roof to increase your water collection system. Also there are solar panel systems that can be used heat your water and collected into a special hot water tank.

Jeff, I’m sure you have already considered this, but the girls shoot a lot of the meat and it appears they do most of the chores. You are really only there for entertainment purposes and I suspect that might run a little thin. One of these winters is going to be tough and the girls will whisper to themselves, “I think he might dress out at about 185". Rose says, “Trust me, 150. Tops.” If you start to see the bottom of the freezer you should probably be on your best behavior or that little goat might be wearing your hat..

Gives you an idea how amazing those girls are, Melting snow for water, even for a short while would drive anyone crazy, and yet there they are happy as can be, So it seems anyways. There was a time when I loved winter, come fall I would set up a prospecting tent way up north, and spend most of my winter there, The business of melting snow for water was a nightmare and the novelty of it got dull after the first winter, one quickly realizes why colonies were built around watering holes lol.

ok, hear a true story story. I've mentioned that I lived in grid hell I was born of grid. one winter I came home from school & my mum bless her sead Les I hadn't had a drink of tea all day the pump is frozen up, & I couldn't get water, I sat there & said Mom can't believe you been here all day without a drink, WE have 6 feet of snow outside? mom replied I can't drink snow. If it is so dirty melt it in a bucket Put it through a cloth sieve & put it on the stove to boil & put that into the pump. & it will unfreeze the pump, Mom. I neither thought of that sead Mom. bless. So I went out got the water bucket filled it with snow & melted it & In time it went into the top of the pump & the Hay presto The pump was unfrozen. Well if I'm honest it was the bad winter of 1962 & the snow was so deep we used snow shovels to get to school. yes it was that bad in 1962, we still had snow in Appal & may I think it was the first time I decided to lag the pump I used corn sacks & straw & an old lorry tarp to keep it all dry & rapt it twisted weir to hold in on the pump It never froze agen & mom went without a cup of tea. I removed it in 1970. yes, I kid you not it was on fore decade. it got below 40 at one stage that winter it would start to melt & refreeze at Night WE had icicles a meter & 2 meters long on the house. but a cotton filter will tack out the derby & a good boiling will kill of most of the bugs that matter, I'm suppressed you haven't sunk yourself a well to catch your water table supply. & deep pump Hang on you have one you use it on your ice ring. By the way, have you got the bugs out of the Gasifier? Thought Abbot puling that damp smock through a fire pit before it went to the generator, i had the same problem with our gasifier on wet summers i got over it by filling a pipe full of charcoal About two feet will do it "2 Or 3" pipe will do weld it into a gas cylinder on its side lined with clay & an air fed pipe with hols on it to feed the barn. the pipe with the charcoal will get red hot & create a second reduction Zone now pull your damp smock throw that before you send it to your motor & your gas will run as sweet as a nut at charismas. remember to manta your vacuum for it to work as the oxygen in the smock hits the hot Coles it is burnt off Living only gas on the vacuum Les Hop you like my tail in my day never had the net & cameras like today So have only my memoirs If you go on my page Facebook page Les Thompson You will see me & rabbits . &the grand kids .
