I know it's 2021 now... But I think I'm finally going to try making some short comics this year, I'm thinking webtoons as that seems to have a good audience and decent interface... I've got a setting I love and a character and now I just need to think of bite sized plots suitable for my adhd brain to work on! Maybe when I've got a few under my belt I can think about executing my big dream proje.ct :>

This was great. I'm more into having my Patreon and my own site, from then as chapters are finished I'd like to post to Webtoons. I'm taking the route of page format (more like graphic novel style) and chopping it up into mobilecomic/webtoon format. One way I've found helpful has been to drive IG or TikTok fans to the site first and then mention the social media stuff in other space, but not on the website, because I'd like them to stay. I want to give people an incentive to use the Paywall or Patreon to subscribe and keep ahead of the website and webtoon comics. Each updates at diffrent rates.

If you have a lot of Tiktok and Instagram fans then this is a very good tactic! I love the idea of posting whole chapters on Webtoons too, when you have collected quite a few pages. Sounds good, Nadia! And thanks for watching!

@@pencilsandstories My biggest takeaway was remembering to evaluate and re-evaluate my target market and adjust my artwork accordingly. It would be too easy to forget the bleeds and colour choices if I want to transition from web to print.

Hi Henrike! Happy 2020 to you! I plan to post some comics online this year :D I'm thinking several short comics (around 4 to 16 pages stories), just to get familiar with the process of making comics. I thought about posting on Tapas for starters, plus a personal website gathering all the comics (I always loved Emily Carroll's website but watch out if you're not familiar with her work, it's mostly horror). I am also working on a longer webcomic project, but taking my time to improve the story before I jump in drawing it all. I plan to draw ready-for-print comic pages in all those projects, because I find that format so damn beautiful, but I'm also interested in doing swipe comics on Instagram (4 to 5 panels, horror themed maybe?). I have yet to find story ideas for those, though. I like Twitter but it's never felt very comic friendly to me, especially when you need to make it a thread, reading those is sorta awkward! I'd like to have a Patreon at some point but like you pointed out, I feel I should first get some work out there and start building an audience. Keeping a patreon dedicated to one long webcomic project would also make more sense to me! Webtoon is a maybe, they're good for audience but not so great for monetization. I read some webcomics from Hiveworks and would love to apply there with long-comic project whenever I'm ready. A very recent, French option (but they accept foreign languages) is Bayday(dot)com. I don't know how well they'll be doing but the promises of the platform are interesting, you should check it out. I'm not ready to start publishing there though, which is a shame considering it may be easier to make yourself seen on a starting platform? Aside from deciding where to post, I'd also be interested in tips on how to decide your own deadlines and staying true to your schedule - or reassess if you messed up. It may be personal and different for everyone, but even so I feel such a video would be reassuring and encouraging. Thanks for the great tips, looking forward to your next videos :D

Thanks for your thorough comment, Aline! Short comics to start out and working on your bigger story in the meantime sounds like a solid plan! I think you will find next week’s video very reassuring in that regard. A traditional comic format sounds great, and is more accepted on Tapastic than on Webtoons, I feel like. Alternatively, you could do what Jason Brubaker does for his books: design the comic for traditional comic book format, and then cut it up into a scroll format for Tapastic and individual panels for Instagram. (Just an idea though, it’s a lot of work to do that, but might be doable for shorter comics) Twitter threads are awkward, yeah. I wouldn’t use Twitter for very long or ongoing projects, but it works great for getting a one shot, very short comic out there in an easy way. Yeah, Webtoons has no outbound links, so it’s hard to get people off of the platform towards something else. I hadn’t heard about BayDay yet! I checked it out and so far I can only find French comics and not an easy way to search for other comics. But a new platform might mean more eyes on your work, if BayDay does a good job in promoting their site and their comics. Don’t know what their contract looks like (their Terms of Service were a bit awkwardly worded) but if they do their job well it might be worth it. Hiveworks is hard to get into, but if you manage to do that, then they can take a lot of work out of your hands. :) Thanks for the input on subjects you like to see more of! There’s definitely some videos on schedule about planning. :) Deadlines can be hard to deal with, depending too on the complexity of your project and other things in your life. Balancing it all can be tough (I know it is for me) and comics are not the easiest option in that regard. But I have a lot to say about this subject, so I’m sure future videos might spark some new ideas for you. :D Thanks for subscribing and have a great day! Keep me posted on any comics you make!

Is there a certain button to begin a webcomic. All these videos are really just telling me tips.
@pencilsandstories
@pencilsandstories 4 жыл бұрын
FredsTheFaz BazClaz Start by figuring out the things I mention in this video and go from there. Getting comfortable at making webcomics is only done by actually making them. You’ll mess up, learn from those mistakes and get better. These tips do help in messing up less though. A start button would be nice, haha. For now I’ll settle with coming up with a plan and then sitting down and do the work, no matter how uncomfortable it is at the start. You’ll get used to it and get better, over time. :) I do have a course that will give you feedback on your comic and where I outline everything, but even a course requires you to do the work. It’s the only way.

HI! How long does a page usually take? or how long should it take atleast? Umm... I really want to make comics but, I don't know how and the fact that I always try my best to finish my drawings once i started it already. (i know drawings can be continued the next day but feels like i always lose my focus then just leave it out so i try to finish it the same day) aany help? Oh, also, do you have anyyyyyy videos about how to plan for comics etc.
@pencilsandstories
@pencilsandstories 4 жыл бұрын
RicaSketches Hi Rica, a page “should” take as long as you want it to take. There’s no right or wrong way to do this. You might spend 40 hours per page on a 10 page comic or 8 hours per page if you update more than once a week. (Just examples) What’s important is finding a style you’re comfortable with and that you can do pretty fast. My first pages of Recollection City took forever. Now they take an average of 15-20 hours to do. I’m still working on becoming faster but that comes with time. I also chose an elaborate art style. If you only have 5 hours a week you could choose to use a simple style, or leave inking or colouring out. I’ve seen some great comics that were done in only pencil. Can you elaborate on what you mean with planning a comic? Planning what, exactly? :) Thanks for your comment!

@@pencilsandstories Thank youuuu! Wow, that's insane! I've read some of ur web comic and it's really great!. Also what I mean, like if you are about to make your own comic, like do you have to plan the whole story out first then make a comic out of it? How do you plan out the scenes? Where to put those speech bubbles.. Storyboards? Are there any proper way to do it? Or one should, "just do it"?
@pencilsandstories
@pencilsandstories 4 жыл бұрын
I plan on making more videos about all that. There definitely is a method to it. I do plan my entire story in bullet points and do the same for the scenes, then divide those in pages. Just go big picture to smaller and smaller. Don’t write a novel but do gather the info you need to start thumbnailing and make your story coherent. There’s a method to composition esp. I will make later videos about that. I recommend subscribing to the channel and to my email list. There’s a bonus pdf that you get when you subscribe to my list, which lists a few tips already. :)
