You should talk to Ben about how to start your own fruit trees from seed. He has had good success from peaches and cherries.

You can use your cut trees/logs to defined your planting areas. It will help to keep the mulch in its place and your walkways tidier and the weeds will be more manageable. ❤️

Ok cracking up at the goofball cat! Good job catching him in the act. What kind of chicken is Clementine? The blue splotch on their back is so pretty. The pathways look so NICE now. Gotta feel good looking at them! Great job guys!

Isn't he such a goof?! Clementine (and Peach) are our Amber Stars, but the blue on their backs is actually an iodine spray called Blukote. The roosters were starting to over-mate with them and were pulling out feathers & causing some wounds. This is the main reason we had to get our Roos separated! Also, you're right. I can't stop admiring my pathways! lol

I heard, I believe it was, Billy at Perma Pastures Farm say urine kills tree stumps because it's high in nitrogen. So same idea of putting holes in the stump after you've cut it as low as you can, and then dousing it in urine. You can google it too. It probably keeps critters away too since they smell a human.

Looks great! I'm getting the itch to start getting ready for Spring. If you have any areas you need cleaned up from overgrowth pigs can help with that and they till the land in the process. Then you can put it into freezer camp when no longer needed. @ThePasturedHomestead, Zac has done that with all his land.

Really looking into the trees that you get because now they got those smaller trees they don’t last as long but they produce quicker and they’re not other dwarf so they don’t grow real big plus also look into what is best in your area for growth and for chill cold time things like that really research

Make sure when the guys come back to give you some mulch give them like some cookies or muffins or something when we get that extra help from the city workers like picking up stuff or you know anything that they have to do and I feel like it’s just a little bit too much work. I always give them some cold, cokes or something like that or you know I’ll go out there and give them something in return to show that I appreciate them.

I am a big fan of mulch. As it breaks down, it really improves soil. My sunny front yard in the suburbs has raised berms. I use mowed leaves, wood mulch, bunny & chicken manure. Now 4 years old & great texture for flowers & veggies. I have wood mulch paths. I use cedar mulch closer to the house.

I watched a Linda Vater video yesterday of a garden in California where the lady used fallen trees as walls. She had cut them into rounds and then split those into fire wood. She then stacked them into rows everywhere. They were eucalypts that fell in a storm and there was a lot of them. Interesting idea to use wood. Hello from Aus.

Leave cardboard out in rain- when it gets moist the labels and tape are easy to remove. To keep it from blowing I lean it somewhat upright and braced against something- like between your two carts. Seldom will travel far that way. Love how great the coop and A frame are working out.

I started some seeds and sea trays yesterday. I think a good about 20 the majority of them were tomatoes. I did do peppers think I did about. I don’t know eight peppers maybe more but I actually don’t use grow lights because here in Houston Texas it’s kind of hot. It starts out cold but it gets really hot so believe me I’ve done real good success with just doing my seeds on the porch naturally with the sun, I will use a dome for for a day or two and then I’ll take the dome off 🌱🌱

We don't really have any trees *in* the orchard that would do well with that (many are rotten from being overcrowded), but we do want to try doing this in the future on other parts of the property. Especially since we have so many bradford pears we could use!

I’m in Charlotte. Of course I’m itching to clear beds but I know there are beneficial bugs burrowing/nesting in there. When are you planning to start cleaning beds? (Just curious)
@calicocowacres
@calicocowacres 4 ай бұрын
Honestly I wish I had a better answer, but I’m just hoping to get to it as soon as possible prior to growing season. We’re putting the roosters on them to scratch them up & fertilize for us, but when I do clear beds out I usually just try & cut off the above ground parts & leave the roots in place to add to the soil as they break down. We also have plenty of lots of spaces outside the garden that we intentionally left leaves & whatnot undisturbed for beneficials!

Looking good I have a lot of getting ready the beds ready I don’t have any grass on my property it’s all asphalt. That’s the way it’s been forever so I have race beds, but I do need to get some of them ready. I am happy that I self composting and composting that I have some really good compost to use this year for the first time in four years I have three or four buckets that I’ve been composting and one is probably I don’t know 65 gallons or so it’s ready for this year so happy Awesome I lost a lot of peppers with the freeze but I did overwinter I always overwinter so I’m overwintered three peppers 🫑
