See my latest experiments and behind-the-scenes footage!
In this video, you’ll learn how to make your own ‘baby tesla coil’ (also known as a slayer exciter) using Lego Technic. It's not quite the same as a traditional spark-gap Tesla Coil, but it approximates the fundamentals of a solid-state Tesla coil quite well. Using only a few simple (widely available) components like a transistor, an LED, a few resistors, and some wire, you can create your own versions. Who’d have thought you can use Lego to transmit power wirelessly?
I've tried where possible to build this high voltage slayer circuit using mostly Lego. Even the secondary coil tower and switch are made of Lego. This exciting electronics experiment allows you to do things like excite the gas in fluorescent tubes, making them glow - just by holding it in your hand near the tower! I think it's just so beautiful watching these bulbs light up wirelessly. There are many other fun energy tests you do with them too.
You don’t need to know much about electronics or circuits to get yours to work. And the circuit is very forgiving - you can use a wide variety of easy-to-find components, in a wide variety of configurations.

It sure can. Though you can actually make one MUCH more powerful, and also much smaller. That's my next video coming shortly 😉

Instead of a 9V and a custom button, you could just use a standard PF battery pack. Also, what is the frequency you are using? 2N2222 is not that high of a frequency transistor IIRC.
@JamiesBrickJams
@JamiesBrickJams Жыл бұрын
Damn now I'm kicking myself - using the PF battery pack would have been a much better idea! The frequency is self-drive, so it sort of depends on the setup.. but usually for a 2n2222 it oscillates around 1-2 MHz. Though I believe they can manage a max of around 200-250 MHz. It really doesn't like a lot of current though. Tends to get fried in about 15 seconds with voltages over 9v if current isn't limited. I've found you can sustain it much longer if you limit the current a lot though. Or use a heat sink. Might post some experiments there at some point

hey, the circuit is say, the secondary coil top is going to ground and between a capacitor. can this part be skipped?
@JamiesBrickJams
@JamiesBrickJams Жыл бұрын
Hey, if I understand correctly, yes you can skip it - the top load acts as the 'capacitor'. But most of my slayers don't even need a top load to work fine
