The tool is designed for a completely different purpose. A rotary demo hammer is designed to maximise kinetic impacts, while the actual spin strength is secondary. An earth auger tool is designed the opposite way

They are far from pointless. People ask me if tools can do things everyday. So this shows them that it can't. I've done 2 videos showing impact wrenches not driving augers and STILL people think they can, so these are questions people want answered, even if they are still too dumb to believe the results. Guys don't want to buy another tool of they think one they already have will do the job.

When we put a vinyl fence around my yard we rented one of those 2 man gas augers from home depot. Damn thing kept binding up and kicking back on us, and my brother is a big dude. We brought it back and got a cheap gas 1 man auger at harbor freight. Thing worked great and was less than $200. Im sure its probably around $250 now, but i couldnt believe how much better it worked than a big massive 2 man one from home depot. Have used it a few times now and still works. I hate pull cords so i took the cover off, put a socket on my drill and get it going that way, nice and easy, no pull string.

the electronic speed setting i imagine is the opposite of a geared speed select, rather than increasing torque id say it cuts voltage or what % of time that voltage is applied to the actual motor windings and therefor torque at lower speeds and youll get the most power out of the max speed probably a little bit less amps and electronics heating up too as it must be doing some heavy switching to try and cut the speed down electronically

I wonder what makita tool has the largest motor stator / rotor and amp draw. Would their largest SDS-MAX rotary hammer be more powerful then the auger drill ?
@alouisschafer7212
@alouisschafer7212 2 ай бұрын
Their largest corded sds max would drive that auger just fine they have got very beefy motors BUT I wonder if the gearbox is up to the task I think it would just slip the anti stall clutch constantlyl and trigger the electronic shutoff. For a big auger you need a tool designed to deliver as much torque as possible. A large angle drill with a slow speed or a mixing drill would work.

@yngndrw.
@yngndrw. Жыл бұрын
How did you put the smoke back in? I assumed it would be limited in such a way that it wasn't possibly to burn it out like this but obviously not. I usually use my SDS for hole saws and paint mixing but I'll have to be mindful of this now. I am jealous of the speed dial on yours though as my older 18V SDS doesn't have it and it's often a bit too fast for hole saws in plasterboard (Just throws the dust out sideways before the dust cup reaches the ceiling.)
@finlaybichan1275
@finlaybichan1275 Жыл бұрын
does the trigger not do speed control on the newer models?
@yngndrw.
@yngndrw. Жыл бұрын
@@finlaybichan1275 I think both do on the newer models, so the dial sets the maximum and then you get more control from the variable trigger. That's the issue on my older one for hole saws in plasterboard, you need enough power to start it spinning but not so much that it flicks dust everywhere and the difference between those two is a very small movement in the trigger. If I could set a lower maximum on a dial, there'd be far more range of control from the trigger.
@hairsonabobbin
@hairsonabobbin Жыл бұрын
A rotary hammer/sds drill isn't made for high torque jobs. They're made for punching, not twisting. A rotary hammer with 3J breaking power can have less than 20Nm torque. That's less than a 12V drill.
@yngndrw.
@yngndrw. Жыл бұрын
@@hairsonabobbin I've been using an SDS for hole saws and mixing based on the assumption that they are geared down and therefore must be better for lower speed applications, but after reading your comment I've just realised that I based this assumption on absolutely no evidence - Not one shred. I've just had a look at the manual to try to find some of the torque values for various sizes (Which I didn't find in the manuals I looked at) and realised that the newer manuals even tell you not to use them for hole saws. So now I feel like an idiot, thanks. I'll switch back to my standard drill in the low gear!

i think it would be helpful to understand a little bit more about how these type of electric motors generate the torque. the other guy said to use a reducer gearbox which would then make sense if the sds generates higher torque at higher rpms. and there is a wide range of differently performing (or even differently designed) sds out there on the market. so that would also affect which gear ratio of gearbox is going to be the best match to any given specific sds drill. the guideline being anywhere from 4:1 reduction up to 12:1 or 15:1. it is also worth noticing the difference within the tool between a speed setting variable potentiometer. which is not going to change the tool's internal gearing ratio. and those other tools which actually do have a real internal mechanical gearbox with physical gearing reduction and different ratios. which also varies from tool to tool depending on what the design the manufacture had chosen. all in all feel a bit disappoint to see this negative result. because the early failure prevented you to be able to go on far enough to be able to test an compare an actual working performance against that other dedicated earth auger tool. to then know if the sds approach actually is capable enough to be a serious alternative. (or in fact better or worse than the 40v hammer drill testing, using same auger bits, the same muddy ground, same all other test conditions etc). so it feels like a missed opportunity to have gathered a good data. that is fair and impartial. upon which such basis can be assured. and in the end the real world utility of this approach also depends a lot on the cost / benefit ratio of either paying more money for the dedicated proper tool. against the cost savings on the sds in exchange for the hassle and extra work involved doing those necessary fabrication work mating together different adaptors and such to the right geartbox, and also welding onto the gearbox stage extra metal parts for a handle to hold it and steady it properly in a usable and safe fashion. otoh if you already have a junker old (but massive) sds lying around then it could be a really fun weekend project for somebody out there. also too bad about the damage to the makita 40v sds... i never like to see good tools end up getting hurt like that. but once you see the smoke you know that it has partially burnt off some of the enamel insulation of the motor windings. and therefor compromised at east partially some of the windings of the motor (which is a permanent type of a damage). which then would make it less protected in future against any other such event recurring a 2nd time or a 3rd time. and those makita cordless sds drills aren't cheap! but some useful lessons learned thank you

Common myth with brushless DC motors, "instant torque." Which sorta means "this motor has full torque even at lower RPM. However, they actually have far LESS torque at lower speeds than their brushed counterparts, especially when compared to brushed tools that plug into the mains. Also, every electronic speed controller (ESC) that slows RPM cannot increase or decrease torque. Only mechanical changes to RPM can change torque, via gear ratios and other means.
@toolscientist
@toolscientist Жыл бұрын
You probably already know this, but the lower torque is due to the ESC cutting power to save the mosfets/windings. You could drive it to stall if you were happy to cook the mosfets. Cheap brushed tools often have no stall protection so will cook themselves when stalled. The video does show that he has more success at low speed, though. Probably because it's easier to gradually load the motor without tripping the stall protection.

Where the smoke came from? Was it the windings or electronics? In any case, life expectancy compromised. When you do that, stall current will be many time the running current, overheating the windings, electronics and battery. It's almost like a short circuit! Try that across the battery terminals. That being said I did that to my Milwaukee drill, let it cooled way down and fine ever since.

@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL one legit reason would be using a diamond core bit or a large steel bit/holesaw. You would use low speed if you didn't have water or cutting fluid on hand.

I think it would have been better, if you take out the loose soil every 4 inches or so. The same goes for drilling in moist brick. It clogs the bit and get stuck.

Way too much torque load for a little sds drill. You will want a slow turning drill for this task like a 2 speed drill on low gear. Or a proper auger drill like you already have 😅 Preferably a corded one they have endless torque and never really overheat. The problem is you dont have enough of a gear reduction in these small sds drills they are meant to turn at 500-1000rpm. So no wonder it cooked the motor.

I think you made some damage not esential. Open the tool, probably some wire went too hot started to melt, it may now need to resolder, or even change burned wire, advice to open, easy to do, just some screws
