In this video I'm taking a look at my new 18v makita/katsu trim router. I take you through what's in the box, specifications & give a quick demo of the tool in action.
( I am in no way saying this is exactly the same as the makita version just that it looks the same)
I can't compare quality with the makita as I've not used one or owned one.

Dave, good review and great to see someone actually demonstrating a product practically as well as just talking about it...many of us amateur wood workers tend to learn best when actually seeing stuff being done (visually) rather than just waffle and outrageous background music doing your head-in !! Keep it simple and don’t change your format. Keep the faith 🛠

Great review! Living in Japan at the moment, figured i could get tools cheaper than stateside....i was very wrong most tools are about double the price. So I ended up buying clones for my work. My Japanese peers were blown away that tools like this even existed and wanted to know where they could order the same so I showed them this vid.

Thanks for sharing! I've got the Makita corded and cordless trim router. However, last year I bought the Katzu 240v corded router to use on a DIY router table. I think it cost me around £40. Up until then, I was using the cordless router to make shaker doors. It worked really well, but I didn't want to trash the batteries, or lose the flexibility of the cordless router - I use it on jobs to swing doors and the like. Anyway, the Katzu works a treat. No, it's not as smooth as the Makita, but it now lives under the table and fitted to a vacuum does an excellent job. Never mind what the tool snobs think; if it works, well, it works!

I've not used the makita routers either corded or cordless so can't compare the katsu 18v trim router to those. All I will say is I've used this plenty & it does the job fine. I like it so far, I only bought the 18v version as I've been using the corded version for years without problems.

Hi Dave, I just watched your review as I have just purchased this and look forward to working with it. In essence, and as far as brands go if it works to a satisfactory level +. I have no qualms in purchasing it over Brand names. Trust me; they are not loyal to you. I bought an item with a brand name in the summer and did not see that if you don't register within thirty days, your warranty will only be valid for that 30 day period and not extended to 3 years. The Brand name did not even respond to my request for assistance, let alone acknowledge any emails. Stay with your format; it works.

Good review Dave, I think the Katsu routers are great value. I bought the corded version to put into a small router table I made, then more recently bought an extra base & the plunge base for easy swap overs. I have thought about getting the cordless version as I’ve got a few Makita batteries, so thanks for reviewing 👍.

I bought a cordless Katsu a year ago complete with base and inserts, etc cost over £120 used it a few times probably 6 or 7 before the motor just burnt out smoking etc, total JUNK..... had to buy a proper Makita this time corded and what a difference - it works ......

Hi David, I have both the Katsu & Makita, I would say there definitely not exactly the same as you said. They look almost identical however in closer inspection you can see and feel the difference, also the makita sounds better and runs smoother. Having said that I'm not knocking the Katsu as I own one and have just ordered a new cheap palm router because there very handy to have. Good review mate and it looks like a decent bit of kit.
@GrumpysWorkshop4
@GrumpysWorkshop4 3 жыл бұрын
I only said they look the same😜. This ones half the price of the 18v makita & being brushless too I don't think its a bad router for £80. Would love the makita but my bank account wouldn't stretch that far. This one is a lot quieter then the 240v katsu. Anyway you own festool so your opinion doesn't count 🤪🤪🤪🤣.

@@GrumpysWorkshop4 108 & 158 mate, exact copy and exactly the same. But like I said I'm not knocking it I own one I'm just saying it's not exactly the same, I've heard people say it's made in the same factory with the same components, but through my eyes it's definitely not.

I run teal tools, we can't get Katsu in Australia (I think Makita Australia would sue them :P) and the depth adjustment is definitely the odd part of this design. The DeWalt and Bosch have much easier adjustments, but other than that it is a great bit of kit. The Katsu is definitely not running the same the motor as the Makita, but for the price it seems to be a great little tool from all Ive seen of it. Like all budget tools as long as you run it within its means it will serve you well.

Having worked for a manufacturing company and seen a mountain of boxes with other 'manufacturers' names on the boxes and being told "Yeah, we make em for all those companies" and since then finding out that most 'manufacturers' will tool up to make a certain amount of products but to expand their range will have other manufacturers rebrand an item either using different mouldings or colours or buy in a range from somewhere abroad that's not available in your country. I would still like to see someone like -Ave- take apart a Katsu and a Makita and see what the internal differences are if any. Go on Karl let's see you open up yours. 👍 😎

I was considering buying this router from Chinese online market. I was wondering if this is copy of Makita or even the same product with different brand name on it. I didn’t find any good review back than so I ended up buying original Makita. One difference I can hear is that your router seems to have higher pitched noise especially while in lower rpms and once set rpm seems to fluctuate a little bit. So I guess it is copy (although quite good copy) but not the same product with different brand on it.
