Thank you for the great video. WOuld you be able to tell me what type of wood you used, and if I was interested in using a clacker board. How do I go about setting it up? Meaning is there a certain measurement you use? Thank you,

Hi Bklyn James, this is from Sensei Morrone: "Thank you for watching and for your question. Striking Board: Maple 1 x 6, 4' 3". This board can be adjusted according to the Karataka's size. Clacking Board: Pine, 1 x 6, 3' 7" This board does not have to be exact. The higher this board is the more noise it makes. Also the Center Board or Tension Board can change noise."

What does the lifting of the front foot do as you punch? Is this due to the wide stance? I study Isshinryu, so our stance is much more narrow or box looking. I find all styles of karate very interesting, thank you for the video.

Does the "clacker" serve any purpose other than making a loud noise? I'm planning on building one in my back yard, and I don't want my neighbors to hate me lol.

Hello Pugglen, thank you for your question. The clacking of the board is not that important. It does not change the mechanics of executing the punch. However; it does tell you that the speed of the punch is not sufficient enough to make the clacking noise. Many Makiwara boards don't have the second board. My first board did not have the clacking board behind it and you only heard a "Thud". When introduced to the newer boards, I really enjoyed hearing that loud "crack" in the Dojo. The closeness of the walls made the noise resonate even more. For me it was a good feeling. It's all preference. But not necessary for developing the mechanics of the reverse punch. -Sensei Morrone

Power comes from shoulders,hips and proper foot movement . You have it or you don't . The makawari just conditions your knuckles along with pushups . You can't get power from punching " Anything !"...

I did 100 knuckle push ups everyday about 3 years ..due to extreme tension of shoulder muscle, i have to under go physiotherapy treatment because the tendons n tissue torn already at shoulder joint, already 6 month has passed but not recover yet, ...

I don't feel any power despite i did 100-300push ups, i don't think my knuckle is able to break real hard boards..sometime i use 2 inch thick solid chopping board which use for kitchen work ,i think this one is harder than a bricks. ..as i use hammer, the solid bricks breaks easily like glass but this wood produce the vibration back to hammer n my hand, like spring. . What should do if i want to break bricks?what are the type of conditioning should i practise. ..,?how long should i wait to success on this? Please reply me. ..

Sensei can you tell us what you were trying to do, as I seem a bit lost? Also, in 1989 I was training at the Marble Factory in London, according to my Sensei James Rousseau 8th Dan Okinawa Goju Ryu Karate Do, Punching the Board with a Bent Arm is the correct Way of doing this training, as you want to release the energy into the board or body of a person - he quoted: if you punch a solid object with a straight arm the power goes back into your body and not forward into your target Kind regards Michael Hollingbery 5th Dan OGKKNorth London Okinawa Goju Ryu Karate Do Kyokaips I look forward to your reply

+North London Okinawa Goju Ryu Karate OGKK Sensei Hollingbery, Thank you for your comment. The Shotokan System uses a wide hip when using a Reverse Punch. As I stated in the video we are developing the delivery system of the reverse punch. This is done by opening the hip wide and torquing the Quadriceps from the knee up. Then synchronizing the rotation of the hip and the punch to drive the punch forward. The foot must remain solid to the floor with minimal movement. By using your hips in this fashion you will develop a tremendous amount of power with the hip, while pushing into the floor with the foot. Your hips are the driving force of the punch. Your Sensei is correct when saying that the power can come back into the body when hitting a solid object with a straight arm. When hitting a board this hard it is important that you not strike the board with your arm fully extended out. There must be room to extend. Also; that is another reason that the striking board must have movement. It should be able to move about 1 -2 inches. I have used Okinawan Boards in the past. They are wrapped with rope and don't move. You cannot hit an Okinawan Board this way, it will destroy you. Sensei Morrone.

@EmethProductions

Hello TheSeer101, The boards are designed to flex a little so they don't break. When punching the board you should only penetrate about 1 inch into the board. This way the boards will last a little longer. My older brother who was bigger, stronger and had the same training as me was notorious for breaking the boards in half. He was awesome!. He has passed now but we still talk about him and his abilities. -Sensei Morrone
