@@er-jc9wj I'd enjoy Dan engaging those two folks, whom I've seen debate Matt and Bart. I wasn't impressed with either of their apologetics, as they errantly work backwards with the unquestionable belief that their traditions are correct and that their unprovable theology is true. For example, Jimmy isn't even willing to question if the genealogies in Matthew vs Luke contradict, so he comes up with bizarre excuses for how one is a physical and the other a legal genealogy of Jesus through Joseph, which fails to any scrutiny. Jimmy's circular approach that the bible can't contradict because it can't contradict is not something a genius would do. In my experience, the difference between certain TikTok folks that you have called "dummies" and apologists who you think aren't "dummies" is minimal. The apologists often have a more polished delivery, but they're just dressing up many of the same circular, backwards, fallacious approaches and arguments.

While I'm not the UL'er, nor do I have any advanced degrees on this material, I hope you will excuse me if I am compelled to respond briefly to your comment. After being raised in the United Methodist Church, I strayed from the faith and eventually became not just an atheist, but an anti-religious anti-theist. Fast forward to today, and I have come into full communion with the Hole See and serve my parish in the choir and on the stream team. I told the priest who led our RCIA class that I didn't believe in a "historical Jesus." He said that there is no requirement to have perfect belief when we come to the Church - no more than we must have perfect faith or perfect conduct - only that we do not harden our hearts against the Lord moving us to some new understanding, and remain _open_ to the teachings of the Church. The adage "fake it 'til you make it" has been said in many ways throughout the ages - and with good reason. Therefore, I'll leave it to you if you choose to try, and see how your mind ends up reconciling your actions with your knowledge. If it helps, I'll offer you this: our creed opens with _credo in unum Deum_ and not _opino in unum Deum_ - so it's not that we "opine" there is (a/one) god, it's more that we "credit" a/one God. Or, to put it back into the commonly used English translation, it's not that we believe _that_ (there is) one God, it's that we _believe in_ one God (closer to the way we might _believe in_ one option over another). Despite what most of us who recite the creed every week probably think, we are not reaffirming an epistemological claim about truth, we are stating a conscious choice to believe in God (rather than in money, or some other person or thing - material or conceptual).

@@MarcillaSmithThat doesn't really answer the question, at least not for me. What would be really difficult for me is reconciling any evolutionary model with Genesis 3, and how that would all reconcile with Jesus dying for our the sins of humanity. And then there's another arguments against the idea that Jesus could die for our sins that I find compiling. So IDK.... I'm only anti-theistic where religious extremists are concerned, in case you're wondering.
@MarcillaSmith

@@daviydviljoen9318 Ok, well, I definitely consider myself a religious fanatic, and not a religious extremist, FWIW. And my previous post was to encourage the OP in reaching for his goal, by introducing myself as someone who had done something similar, and leave it for him to discover his own rationale in the process. To address your concerns, which are different, I think the only "evolutionary model" that needs reconciling with Genesis 3 is with regard to the evolution of storytelling. I don't think the point - certainly not the value - of the story is how the snake lost its legs (I couldn't even tell you, off hand, if snakes evolved from legged or legless ancestors). Christ, even if born perfect, must die to Himself as a consequence of our sins, otherwise, we have no model to imitate. This is to say that really _all_ of us need to die to ourselves, and it is due to the sinful nature of our kind. We must die to our own sinful nature, in order to strive to avoid sin, and we must strive to live without sin not only to please our Lord and for our own sake, but because we will always be surrounded buy those who sin, and we serve them better - as Christ serves us - the more we can live without sin, and live as an example of life without sin.

@@HoraceTorysScaryStories I don't know man. I used to be a hardcore evangelical trinity-believing christian, but ever since I have been exposed to Dan's videos, I have drastically changed my views. Like you know somethings up when you see someone going from believing cringy prophetic christian tiktoks, to subscribing to Bart Erhman in a matter of months lol. And I'm not even 18 yet. That being said, I am definitely not a traditional christian but I still feel as if there must be something beyond this world and our understanding. Maybe due to my previous dogmatic nature I don't know. I feel like this because I remember when I was a strong Christian, some things felt like it had to be done by a divine thing. I don't know how to explain it, but it felt like I actually did have a personal relationship with God. Maybe from your point of view, I am just a scared boy that's to afraid to think for himself or leave his "cult". Me personally I really do want to believe in something divine, but not like a fairy tale. I want proof of what I believe to be true and not harmful to the world. I do believe the historical jesus existed, the main problem for me is that I simply can't grasp worshipping a God that commits so much hateful thing, mainly in the old testament. Almost like marcionism. And I gave up talking to christian sources for answer because they're not helpful when I look at them critically. Another reason why I guess I still wanna believe I because I'm scared of dieing and it. Yeah I know that's pretty lame but yeah. I do look at thinks critically and take the facts away from religious biasness, and to be honest, since I look into a lot of scholars like Dan and Bart Erhman, I would say I know a lot more about Christianity and the bible, than most regular christians today. As I continue to examine this very thing, I think more and more that it is a very early (maybe the first) thematic collection of short stories using the names, locations, and circumstances of the period. Written in such a way that creates the feeling that it could very much be the record of something that actually happened. A modern, well known example would be The DaVinci Code. It wasn't entirely accurate, but used many real world references that made it feel like it was a true story. Then again, maybe I'm off the mark on this one and it's just a wild thought.

The dead sea scrolls really only show that these stories and writings existed during that time period. They do not confirm that the stories they contain actually happened. It would be like finding a pile of writing notes and first drafts from the harry potter series. It doesn't make the story any more true than it already is (it's fiction, if that was unclear). And Josephus doesn't confirm any of this either, the closest he got was describing what christians believe, not whether the events they claimed happened, like the resurrection, actually happened. Essentially it would be like me writing that flat earthers believe the earth is flat. I am not confirming that the earth is flat, I am simply documenting this group exists and this is what they believe. Josephus' writings was on that level.

The reason those connections are seen as evidence by those that believe it is the word of God is exactly the thing Dan mentions about them being the product of research done with the completed text and not something the ancient authors did intentionally. Remember the bible has dozens of authors over thousands of the year and yet today 2,000 years after it was written we find connections between different dispensations of doctrine within the bible that their own people and culture did not understand and yet today with the completed text we can see how it all fits together with mind boggling complexity that is not possible if the bible was simply the product of changing religious narratives. Additionally there are many instances of supernatural information in the bible that would be impossible for the authors to have written with their current understanding of the world. The main type of this information is of course prophecy which has no explanation beyond divine intervention.

So I have a problem with the last argument. You imply that stories such as the Epic of Gilgamesh helped inspire the Biblical stories but here's the thing scholars never mention when they mention similar stories from the ancient Near East, the *whole world* shared similar stories. The scholars/critics who do mention argue for syncretism. The problem? We have ancient Indian petroglyphs from Spirit mountain which *predates* the arrival of the Europeans of the Europeans and these petroglyphs tell a story quite similar to the Bible. So it's not a bad argument, but when looked at when regarding the entire world?? There are going to be issues with many of the assumptions put out by critics and scholars. Most of these stories are flood stories, although you'll find other similar creation stories like the Hawaiian god Kāne creating the first man from mud and sending a flood after humanity due to anger of their actions. EDIT: I definitely could've worded and said that a whole lot better but you catch the drift.

Why do I believe it to be true? Because we're talking about factors here my friend. How did the Bible practically outsmart the Greeks and Aristotle on scientific facts? The Greeks believed that all river water came from a giant subterranean lake. Modern science disagrees but it agrees with Ecclesiastes 1:7. In his book called 'Meteorology' (book 2) Aristotle tries arguing that there are no springs in the sea due to the sea being still and not flowing like rivers do.
