I wrote a 50-page thesis on Your Name and Weathering With You for my undergraduate honors program. This interview confirms so much of what I wrote about in that paper, it feels very, very rewarding to hear him talk about some of these subjects.

I'm so glad this film made it to theaters state-side. Being able to watch a Shinkai film in IMAX is almost a religious experience. It is so engrossing that you feel like you're going on a journey with the characters, and the theatrical experience just emphasizes this.

Thank you for this interview and thank you to this beautiful soul, Makoto Shinkai ! If this didn't bring tears to my eyes I'd be lying. Arigatougozaimashita to crunchyroll for this super deep and amazing interview with Sensei❤ And to Sensei We cannot thank you enough for doing this and bringing the movie out. Not only Japan but my country India was part sufferer in the tsunami disaster. And as you said Suzume is a way for the young to understand what the ruins and disasters means to the people, the community and the country as a whole. So I say to you sensei it is absolutely ethical and we are grateful for suzume which has helped closed our wounds and the world's wounds of old disasters. It brings me to tears to know how the team were hoping whether the movie might or might not be seen due to the pandemic which brought the world to a standstill. But like suzume the world is recovering with hope. Hope and love is truly the way out and time and nature will then help the humanity. I just want to close my monologue by leaving a prayer and hope that the humans stop the ecocidal behaviours of wars, hatred and climatic pollution and that we collectively from our nations put efforts to revive the flora fauna and lifeforms.❤

living side by side with disasters, acknowledging real events and their effects on people in contemporary stories... I love this. Acknowledging that the struggles are not exactly rare, and also the human spirit that can respond to the 'new normal' in beautiful ways, rather than a bunch of stories that seem to be in denial or still catching up. There is some comfort in escaping back to some other time, even a surprisingly recent 'golden' time. But having many new stories just ignoring, and not learning anything from events, just makes us feel more disjointed. It starts to have the opposite effect of setting up delusion not hope and redemption.

I made it a tradition to watch all of Shinkai-sensei movies in gold class. The premium feel definitely changed the viewing experience for me, with gold, you get a wider screen which alone suits a film where every frame looks like a masterpiece, allowing you to appreciate every intricate detail. The chairs are much more separated and they recline so you feel more at ease with the atmosphere, a perfect setting for a date too. The best part for me however is the Dolby surround sound system, it creates vibrations throughout the whole room, you can feel the bass with every heart beat, making it feel like you're there with every dramatic fight scene. The best part is that there are not many people who interrupt the movie with talking or their phones. I highly recommend trying this at least once in your life, it no longer feels like you're watching movie, it feels like you're immersed as a part of the art. ❤

After knowing March 11 is the date the earthquake happened, I thought for a moment, 'what a coincidence I've watched this today, today (2023/03/11) is the exact date of Tohoku earthquake commemoration, this movie pays tribute to the victims of that earthquake', so I thought. 😲

This is the man that will surpass Hayao Miyazaki in terms of excellence when it comes to making an anime. He is not quite there yet, but the path has been unfolded before him, he just needs to go on. And it will be amazing to witness his journey along this path. I know it might be a stupid comparison, but it reminds me of Lionel Messi, the great football player that is widely acknowledged as the best player of all time. I think so, too - yet i hope to live to the day to see the player that will surpass him. Its inevitable, because this is what human nature is about.

The film isn’t bad better than weathering with you IMO but it does suffer from pacing issues particularly due to product placement within the movie and the romance between Suzume and Sota felt more like a Disney film with the love at first sight aspect compare to what was gradually developed like in your name these quirks prevent it from being a masterpiece like your name was IMO

Tbh I didn't really see it as a romance movie (which was exactly what Shinkai intended). Suzume did have a crush, yes, but Souta didn't really reciprocate that; in fact, he's just acting responsibly as the adult because he got Suzume involved.

When I first saw the movie at the cinema I thought that I was missing a good portion of knowledge to understand it. That's why I didn't like it that much when at the time since there underlying story was so unclear to me. When I saw it the second time I already had gathered more knowledge, but I still didn't fully understand it. I think this film is just so packed with small and bigger references that people outside of Japan don't really have the full possibility to experience the film like Mr Shinkai planned it.

Makoto Shinkai did not become the "new Hayao Miyazaki" as generally said at the time of Your Name's release, as his other releases unfortunately did not have the same level of repercussion as the one mentioned. But anyway, I admire your animations, they have a special and very loving touch, so you could say, which should be more valued in my opinion.
