Writer/director Makoto Shinkai’s latest fantasy anime Weathering With You is released in UK cinemas on Friday 17th January. His follow up to the widely revered Your Name tells the tale of teenage boy Hodaka who runs away to Tokyo and meets Hina, a girl with supernatural, weather changing powers.
Ahead of Weathering With You's release, we met with Shinkai at London’s St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel to discuss his film’s inception, production and challenges.

Normally I would say the same thing but from what over heard it will be quite a bit different and the main thing it’s taking from Your Name is the basic premise from what I’ve heard it will be using Native American culture as the basis for the body switching so I’m interested to see what they do with it

I thought it was pretty good. I was a little let down by the music tbh. it had maybe 3 songs that stood out compared to almost every song in Kimi no na wa. Also the end scene with the gun felt a bit melodramatic. For that scene to have impact they really needed to build up and establish the characters better. Like maybe show Hodoka's abusive family, have the two characters talk about it, Show how much they depend on each other. Without that the movie ends up feeling a bit empty. Overall maybe a 7.5 or 8 out of ten for me.

I feel like none of Makoto Shinkai’s anime should be life action filmed, because there will be nothing special about the movie. His works are recognized by many not just because of their story lines but also because of the attention to small details on the location. The landscapes look so alive, its just unbelievable! Thank you Makoto Shinkai.

I'm just not going to watch it. Just don't watch it. Unless it gets insane 90+ metacritic score, I aint touching that shit with a 10 foot pole. There exists a universe where it ends up being a good movie. But the chances are very small that we are living in that universe.

The music and artwork were what made me shed tears. As an artist myself, that whole movie was nothing short of breathtaking. The rain animation, and the sunshine lighting up the buildings - quite literally everything felt just right. RADWIMPS are also the only band I can see working alongside Makoto, they just complement his style.

I'm so thankful that he brought the movie to Indian cinemas. I remember I used watch anime on TV on 'Animax' channel, until they removed it in place of a stupid children's channel. There was no way to watch anime on TV and I had to watch it online. The moment I heard about the movie coming to cinemas. I told my parents I was going to college, but instead I skipped a day and traveled like two hours to the nearest cinema lol. That was so so worth it, the movie completely blew my mind. I knew I had to watch it no matter what. I again watched the movie a second time two days later in the same cinema, because it was just TOO GOOD > ~ < Makoto Shinkai's work is too amazing, I watched Your Name, and I knew I had to watch Weathering with you no matter what. Amazing movie. A billions points out of 10.

Makoto Shinkai is really a wonderful person. He is a genius and all of his works are exceptional. I learned so much from him and his works. Makoto-san and his works inspires me so much. When I'm feeling sad, I will watch one or two of his films and I'll be okay. 😊 He is one my favorite Japanese writer and director. Makoto-san and RADWIMPS also have a great chemistry when it comes to the OSTs. 😊 I hope that there will be more people to know him and be inspired by him and his works. Long live, Makoto-san! 🙏🏻

I have to say though the ending made me feel empty, because the last of the runtime they finally meet, and I personally would like to see a epilogue. the music also supported that feeling of emptiness at the end, having no beat or instrument.

I'm from India, and I watched this film in the cinema. First couple of days, I struggled to even find a ticket. My afternoon show was houseful, and this was the first time that Otaku's in India came together in such large numbers. The film hit my heart instantly, and to hear music of radwimps like," is there anything that love can do" I can't even put that experience in words. I am a big fan of Makoto Shinkai. I have watched almost all of his films: 5cm per second, your name, garden of words, just to name a few. I can't thank him enough to release this film in India

SOME SPOILERS: Saw this movie yesterday it was good felt the ending could’ve been better it felt like there was more to be said between the two. A 9/10 for me. Also I what throws me off is that the your name cameos throw me off I know that this is when they haven’t met but given what happens at the end of the movie with Japan doesn’t the end of your name happen after these events. I did notice when it was snowing I think in your name that’s when taki and mit walk past each other on the bridge if I’m right

yes and the next day was the day of sunshine which was the day they met so after that day the rain would've been back since hodoka saved her. so, in conclusion, they met right before the continued rain came back. I saw the movie as well yesterday and just rewatched your name, also in your name taki in that interview for his position that he applied for he said " Tokyo too might vanish one day", which can too can connect to the flooding basically. man makodo shinkia is genius like did he know how he made your name to connect to weathering with you before he even wrote it, his mind is like just as amazing as miyazaki's.

Actually, Mitsuka and Taki pass by on the snowy bridge in Winter of 2021 and meet on the stairs in April of 2022, so the timelines don't make sense when paired with Weathering With You.

His works are a masterpiece, exceptional artwork and magnificent storyline. His animes gives unique vibes unexperienced in none other. Filled with emotional heartfelt tragedies and inspiration. I really love the message of the movie. "The weather can be a little crazy sometimes" With the California fire and Australia fire and heavy blizzard north of US, it's easy to be scared. But the song in the movie says "I'm not scared but I don't stop" like telling us we will all be okey.

I feel like what makes me love his works more is the animation. Starting from 5 centimeters per second to tenki no ko. Every scene and details blew me away along with how the colors were portrayed. Somethings are better left the way they are tbh. I don’t think a live action can capture Makoto Shinkai’s true essence of his works. Idk how the movie will be but I’ll always be there to support as a viewer.
