I get this question or comment a lot. Players say they get the L to L working well with their irons but tend to lose it when working on it with their longer clubs like the driver.
So, why is the L to L more difficult with your driver? If you know why your pivots are breaking down in the full swing, you can get down to the basics and work on the correct movement.
Don't just play golf. Understand it.

Mike is the first youtube golf instructor that has made sense to me. I’ve been pulling with my shoulders since I started playing 3 years ago (baseball background). I used this drill and immediately started hitting pure shots. Thank you!

Mike, thanks for sharing this information. I have played golf for nearly forty years and was’t until I started following your instruction that I got the freedom, speed and accuracy I needed in my golf swing. I fell into the the camp that most players fall into which is to move your shoulders and not your hands and arms. Total poppycock, so now I am hitting the ball further, straighter and with move spin on my short irons. And your short game video was spot on with Jack junior about leveling out your shoulders. You stated to shallow out your approach to make chip shots easy. I hit so many good chip shots now its crazy the improvement. You are so right on all aspects of the game. You are truly a Master of the game!

What a great lesson. I have tried the L to L without much luck but now I see I was pulling with my shoulders. Now that you pointed this out, I am hitting it so much crisper and cleaner and with ease. Almost feels like my body is stationary. Three cheers for MM.

Most speed comes from the hands. Swinging like this is very powerful and body friendly. This is the way most pros hit the ball before the PGA starting teaching a more hit the ball with body rotation type of swing in, I believe, the 1970s? For the average golfer, this is absolutely the best way to strike the golf ball. You go Mike. You sure have helped a lot of golfers.

Thank you Mike for clearing this up. For years and years I've been told I have to get to my left side before the finish of the downswing.

This is gold. And also why my fairway woods lack distance. Have just been on the range and my longer clubs are smoking. The way I’ve found to remember this is to swing feet touching, knees touching and note the shoulder movement. The second ‘L’ falls naturally into place. Thanks Mike.

Excellent. Wish I had seen this video before my 3 shoulder surgeries; am recovering from 3rd right now and hope to play in 2 months. Maybe a problem for others too is being able to trust the concept of achieving the L to L without leading with the shoulders. Shoulders make good followers and terrible leaders (Toski).

Mike, great stuff. I got alot from seeing how you don't sway forward in the downswing. It cancels out all the good you can accomplish by the pivot, the hinging and the momentum. Excellent.

We must try to stay in sync, arms and body. Ben Hogan knew this is a problem the longer the golf club. So, his recommendation was to pull the right foot back, close the stance, to prevent the body from racing ahead. The longer the golf club, the bigger the swing arc, and the importance of not trying the pull hard from the shoulders as that creates the problem that Mike is describing. Instead of pulling the shoulders extra hard, and instead of closing the stance, try to swing the triangle intact from the ground up, with the legs and feet and hips. Also, as the club advances from the backswing plane to the downswing plane, the transition, the golf club gets lighter so it is easier to sync the body and arms, so long as the shoulders don't outrun the now speedier arms and hands. A proper transition results in a feeling of un underhand throwing action. The pulling of the shoulders that Mike describes and shows is anything but an underhand throwing action. So, don't pull with the left shoulder and left arm, and body. That is not golf. The left hand and club must be pulled through impact to the finish, but that is done with a rotating left upper arm where the elbow is pointing down, arms against the upper body, L to L It's easy to see that the L to L works on the downswing plane, while the pull of the shoulders requires no transition to the downswing plane, thus no L to L.

I’ve found this to be of great value for contact & distance. Why are my shots ending right of intended target? I’m right handed & ball flight is dead straight but starts right of intended line & stays there. Not so much of a problem with driver but approach shots 5 yds off line reduce birdie opportunities significantly. Your videos are exceptional teaching aids. Many thanks

Interesting take slowing the shoulders to create the release. What about curving the hub path by pushing back up and away sending the momentum to the club head that way you can keep your foot on the gas through the ball.

Mike I’m a little confused because when you did a video with Eric Cogorno you talked about how the wrist work in the swing. You said it’s like a throwing motion, that the wrist don’t turn over. But in this video it looks like your wrists turn over a lot. Is it because your doing it from a static position then once force and momentum take over and the swing happens they don’t rotate as much as it shows in this video??? Thanks. It’s a little confusing. Can you please explain this… ???

Mike, Todays tour players seem to be doing what is called a straight line release. That is where the club shaft splits the forearms in a capital Y shape. On some of the top players that Y shape continues more than 3 feet past impact. My post impact doesn't do that but at 58 I am old school. Just want your thoughts on this.

Stay in sync and stay centered. The golf club must be transported by the triangle, and the center is the center of the triangle. Transport triangle, club stays centered, and that keeps you in sync where the arms or body do not outrun the other.

Focus on what the left arm is doing and not doing. Mike shows what not to do with the left arm, pull with the shoulder. He demonstrates what to do with the L to L, but does not describe it. The handle must be pulled through the hitting zone, but it is done with a folded left arm on the body and a forcefully rotating left upper arm that is rotating externally. Do not focus on the the right side and arm, focus on the left instead, as the right will do what it needs to do. Be sure to pivot as the body weight shifts to the left. The left hip gets out of the way as the right side comes on through.

Thanks I’ve got a home simulator. Love the concept but I’m not able to feel where the clubhead is before impact feels flippy. With a limited swing distance would you be wanting these to be solid center contact and pretty straight before moving up ? Have to assume so but swing feels so short. Thanks

Mike sometimes trying to do that I hit the ground before the ball with the driver. Also I’d like a video showing how to increase speed because it is not easy to swing at 40% during a competition ! I tried !! It seems to me that Fred Couples do that but his thighs move away from the ball letting more room. Where am I wrong ? Merry Xmas for everyone

The hands do turn over but not by effort, they turn because the rotation from swinging the club face. Look at mikes grip videos that’s where the soul of the golf swing is, establish a neutral (to you) grip. Basically address the ball, let the left arm hang, that position is what your left arm should look like when gripping the club. His video explains it well. This grip allows you to do L to L without any forced rotation or any compensations (especially subconscious) on the backswing or downswing, it becomes neutrally swinging your arms very very loosely, feeling the club weight smash through the ball, and trusting it will come in square because you’ve establish a grip that when your arms are pulled by the force of the swing, they straighten, when they straighten with the right grip you’re automatically on target. There’s no more awkward catching flipping flopping. So yes the hands flip in the L to L because of natural rotation, but the feeling of the L to L is more like a wrist slap, throwing a baseball, basketball, tennis, frisbee (if thrown in reverse lol) Best advice to genuinely understand this in a few minutes is watch all of mikes grip videos you can find, if you don’t understand the grip then the rest of this is way confusing. Hope that helps
