I took 20 years off of golf because of injury - started back practicing last year with pain gone. I figured this stuff out in the last few weeks on my own because I reverted back to my tournament tennis days and hitting my forehand and I kept thinking of DJ's & Koepka's swings (ie. the strong grip looks shut but exactly like my tennis forehand technique) . It is really shocking how incredibly wrong teachers were for the last 50 years and how easily it is to hit a ball repeatedly well using this technique. Start at impact, move the club back to parallel with the club face still aimed at the ball holding the club only with your right hand (repeat this 10,000 times and memorize your right wrist position). Move the club back to the top of the backswing and you will either have a 'closed' club face like DJ & Koepka or 'square' as shown here - pick one. If you simply practice these 3 positions holding the club only with your right hand to train your right wrist where to be - you will become a good ball striker in a few days - it's that easy. Then go figure out how to score well. Awesome video

Yep, sounds familiar. Personally I've no idea what my swing looks like but I sure know how it should feel. I don't even need to look at the ball flight to know whether I've hit a good or not so good shot, it just either feels right or it doesn't. I think we get stuck way too deep in the technical instead of the natural. I'm due to have my first lessons in 25 years later this month as a treat for my 50th birthday and before booking a coach I had a specific outcome I wanted to achieve in mind that he would need to adhere to. I told him I didn't need the prettiest swing in the world and I didn't need to be in 'all the right places at all the right times' in my swing but I did want a swing that was suitable, reliable and repeatable for me and enable me to be competitive in my monthly club competitions. Time will tell if our working relationship will be fruitful.

OMG: After 36 years of practicing endlessly, visiting a multitude of Golf Pro friends and others, running an on line golf shop with all the training aids and producing and hosting a Golf Television show, I have finally got the golf swing. Mike you are my savior. But let me say this, I have studied the golf swing like no other. And what I deduced, for a large percentage of right handed golfers, the left side becomes the dominant side, this in turn causes golf swing to become a difficult thing to master. This is where this video is a stand out, when you get the role of the right arm locked in correctly ; it's all over; all too easy! Mike you are the best, hope to see you Down Under for the Presidents Cup. Thank You so Much. John Lyons

I’ve watched just about every video in YT related to the golf swing. This is by far the best. Rolling your wrists over, cupping, bowing, it’s all bs. Simply line your palm up with the face of the club, during your grip and feel like you are spanking the ball off the tee with your right hand. It works. It fixed my incurable driver slice too.

Top explanation ... On the few occasions i have been absolutely pureing the ball this is what i was doing but couldn't figure out how , it was just a feeling and the next time i played that feeling was gone . This has helped in finding that feeling more often . Anybody struggling should pay attention to what to he is saying in this video you will hit it long and straight .

persona250 that feeling your trying to explain is exactly right. I never had that feeling and would pull hook my irons all the time then this video and the same concept by Danny Maude showed me the light. When this is clicking my irons are unbelievably pure. But some days the feeling goes away. I just learned this technique and feeling so I’m praying this feeling will become more and more ingrained into my mind/swing. Gives a lot of hope to improve and shoot more consistently and lower scores.

Finally I see it. As I tried to swing harder thru the ball I pull hooked more. I kept fight that my losing my grip and trying to swing down the line-but it kept coming back. Some times I never knew what the next hole would bring on bad day. Now I see that it was all wrong. We were all trying to "time" the closing of the club face-close at the top, the middle etc., so that when you reached the bar the face was "closed" to perpenticular to the ball. Now, you don't need to time-just swing.

Man is this a great video explaining how I played for years and years (since the late 1970's). About 4-5 years ago I took some lessons to help me learn to hit the ball on a lower trajectory. By the end of the first lesson the "teacher" was having me rotate and swing the club to "left field" and rotate the lower and mid core as fast as possible to the left while silencing the hands (mostly the right hand) as much as possible all while also limiting my lower leg movement. My handicap went from around a 2-3 up to 8-10 and some weeks higher. This fall after several frustrating years and injuries later I tried to give up that swing idea and feelings and have attempted to go back to just what youve stated in this video. But I feel now that Im in my late 50's in age Im pretty much shot at ever becoming the swinger of the club I used to be because of attempting to hold off and swing left for these past several years. Thanks for putting this information out there, I wish more instructors would do this. Any of you golfers out there been told this by the "new era" teachers...."you have too many moving parts in your swing, we have to limit youre movements so you have a better chance of repeating a swing"???. Well if you have, RUN AWAY FAST because youre going to injure yourself and the damage will be more then a physical one. Ty again for the video, glad I stumbled upon this site thru a Be Better Golf video you were in.

Hey Brett....and to think, to hit the ball on a lower trajectory all you had to do was move the ball position in your stance and slightly de-loft the club. Malaska has a great video on this very same subject.

Mike is pretty special. Damn good teacher. In 1986 at the US open at Shinnecock Hills GC, after round 2 he made the cut and was sitting in a two round total of 148. Jack Nicklaus was on 149, Phil Blackmar 150, Greg Norman 139 and The eventual winner, Ray Floyd on 143. At the bottom end, John Daly shot an opening round of 88 and followed that with a 76 to be cut. Round 3 for Mike saw an 80 followed by a 75 for a 303 total. He won $2761, and the winner Ray Floyd picked up $115,000 and his total score was 279. Total purse was $700,000. In 2020, purse was $12,500,000 and the winner BD, picked up $2,250,000. Just some golfing trivia.

This method of "throwing" the club as opposed to holding it off or rotating your forearms has changed my entire golf game. I went from hitting 40% of GIR to 65%, I am hitting more fairways as well. I am still working on the timing of it to make sure I am not flipping at it, and sometimes still struggle with holding it off, but for the first time in my life, I feel like I know how to get the clubface square at impact.

Great stuff...I am a former advanced tennis player who learned how to play on my own. Watching this video made me realize my swing wasn't wrong. I reached a 6 handicap but struggled to go further. I went to a local pro who wanted to change my swing, telling me I needed to rotate the club open and close it on the downswing like you describe here. I tried working on this for months but never repeated well on the course...I just don't rotate my arms that much. I went back to my old way, as the times I really feel like I'm striking the ball well it feels like a leaned over tennis forehand. The problem is I am now struggling with pushing long irons right and pulling short irons. I cannot go to a local pro as they all want to change my swing to rotate the club face more.

We are similar in our tennis pasts and now golfing. I've had my clubs fit a TXG in Toronto and I had the lie angles on the shorter clubs flattened by 2-degrees, my 6 iron is standard and then I play my 5 iron 1-degree upright - this fixes most of the curvature issues. The other thing to do is look at Viktor Hovland's swing and see how he can hit a soft fade from a VERY strong clubface position (like an in-to-out, down the line, top-spin forehand)

Love it...I also came from baseball and tennis. I never rotated my arms much but went to a pro recently and he had me trying to learn to rotate my arms more to roll the face open and then try to roll it closed. I cant seem to do that well. after seeing this I went back to my old swing with some other improvements and am hitting better. I wish teaching pros would do it they way I saw you do it when talking about the grip that is "neutral to the player"...and teach the swing that best fits the players natural tendencies.

Right! And this is the difference between hinging your wrist and rolling/rotating. The face stays square to the arc and doesn't open and close. Hinging isn't flipping as long as you return the wrists back to what they were at address. A bowed wrist at the top is an example of hinging, the face is *not* closed. If anything it would be delofted.

This lesson shouldn't be free. It's priceless. It's been a tough transition for me, going from the sidearm throwing motion of the downswing, which in fairness allowed me to smoke the ball in my college years, to "getting the hands under the swing plane." But man, once it clicks, it feels great. Better on the back, and fewer "huge" misses.

In my opinion, Mike is an excellent teacher of the golf swing. I was a lot like Mike in my youth. I shot in the 70's, three years after taking up the game at 18. That's with no lessons. Then I started to read the stupid books and got worse. After so long of practicing the wrong things I couldn't remember my swing from the earlier days. Teacher after Teacher, I think I went to four over 20 year's. I never got better. I discovered Mike two years ago. My swing has gotten a lot better but it took a full year of struggling, shooting 90's while trying to learn this. It is just starting to click after a year and a half. It's brutal trying to undo years of bad concepts and mis understanding of the terms. In my opinion golf instruction is horrible on the whole. Especially on TV. Do not listen to one thing they say. The terms they use do nothing but confuse. Their are good teachers but they are hard to find. They teach positions instead of controlling the natural motion. Mike is the best teacher I have found. I wish I could get a live lesson from him. That would be a dream come true for me. I'll have to settle for his videos. Join his website. There is much more in depth teaching on there.

I have struggled as a ball striker forevernand its exacerbated in wind-particularly left to right. My consistency is usually dreadful and usually bad miss to the right. You're explanation of what the right hand should do as opposed to what perhaps nearly everyone strives for in terms of forearm rotation(which i never seem to be able to achieve) is frankly a light bulb moment. I have practiced the last few days in left to right strong winds and now i can hold the ball against and back into it. Ive missed a few to the right but my goodness the confidence to give it a strike as i have started to retrain what my right hand does at impact is astounding! It sort of feels like the handle of the club is going backwards through impact.Thank you. I mean seriously-i was on the verge of ceasing to play golf.

You have to understand how the left hand matches up to this. Bullet pt 3 is the key to making sure the left hand does what its supposed to do. Face square to swing arc on the follow through as well.

Man, great video. I unfortunately figured this thing out myself last week. In my quest to use the similar motions from other sports (tennis, throwing a ball) it clicked. I took lessons and I was inconsistent striking the ball....I knew something was wrong. The golf swing had little in common with the other sport swings...I knew that was the problem. You nailed it. I just wish I didn’t have to wait to figure it out myself. I could’ve used this tip 10 years ago!

0:58 Just wanted to say thank you very much for this video. I actually came to KZfaq because I video'ed my swing, noticed this was happening and thought I needed to "fix" it. Now I realise that isn't necessary :-)

Dustin Johnson exactly! Watch slow motion video of him with driver or iron and his right hand releases. No holding off the club face. He let's it go!

Shame that this guy is one of the few that teaches and explains the right way. I was taught along w many others the absolute wrong way to swing growing up. The flipping of the hands at the bottom of the swing is a borderline impossible way to play the game. Why on earth was I taught this way. Thanks for the great tip in this video makes so much sense and much easier way to play the game.

This lesson was very helpful for me. It's taken me a long time to get a grasp of what happens to the right hand when going from club parallel to ground on backswing to top. It always felt to me that I was swinging up to a closed position. With your explanation about the shoulder rotation's contribution, I think I now get it and I am hoping that it's warm enough to get the range. I'm now going to be able to say good bye to excessive forearm rotations. Thanks.

This was great, thanks, I been tryin to find out about "hank haney golf lessons youtube" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Penamillorn Peerless Prevalence - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? It is a great one off guide for discovering how to learn an effective golf swing method without the headache. Ive heard some super things about it and my neighbour got excellent success with it.

I can't find the other video, but I experimented with a new grip and did what you said basically in this video and I can definitely see what you're saying. I was also taught to flip through the ball, but what you describe here is so much better. I'm having some aim issues, but I think I can work that out with some range practice. I'm going to fly down there and thank you in person some day Mike!

Mike, great lessons. I was always hit or miss with my ball striking. One day a 66, one day a 75 and one day a 93. I never knew or felt comfortable day to day. You nailed it with my twisting of the club and over rotation. I've been working on the correct hand movement into the ball and it has made me much more consistent and confident. Thanks again and have a Merry Christmas.

Mike, I have my own take on the right arm and hand. I liken the right arm and hand to hitting a nail straight into the ground with a framing hammer with the face of the hammer representing the face of a golf club. To do this with the most power and as naturally as possible, your right wrist at the moment of impact would be going in a vertical direction. Your right palm WOULD NOT BE FACING THE GROUND IF YOUR WERE HAMMERING A NAIL STRAIGHT DOWN INTO THE GROUND. Your right palm would be 90 degrees clockwise. If you now replace that hammer with a one iron and try to smash the nail into the ground you would hold the golf club in such a position as you did the hammer. Try it!!! You'll see the power you can generate is much more this way. Palm facing down would almost feel like a "sissy" or a "girlie" strike. No malice toward women intended. What I am therefore suggesting is you change your right hand grip so that your right palm is more under the club than to the right side. This will place your right forearm facing toward the sky at impact and your hand will naturally do what it is supposed to do through the impact zone. You will feel your right wrist bent backwards and the power you can achieve will seem unreal....like never before. If you do this correctly, your left wrist will be bent back or arched in a flexion position somewhat at impact. At the top of your backswing, your left wrist will be straight and your right wrist in the "holding a tray" position. If I did my job in describing this correctly, you will understand the message I'm trying to convey within five shots. Also, the left hand grip doesn't change. I see two knuckles at address. This really does work.

This right hand move has changed my swing. Since I've gone to this my accuracy has improved along with my ball contact. Lastly and im not sure why but along with feeling more confident my swing feels smoother like I'm not trying to over swing. Oddly enough when playing with partners they never tell me they notice me swinging more free. Though I feel like I'm swinging slower in my mind their reaction tells me my swing speed is just fine also justified by my distance.

I just noticed this today trying this right hand move with a strong left grip to guarantee a square face. Felt like the swing became smooth where before it was jaded throughout. I hit further than any swing before, and even then I hit further still, I couldn’t believe it. Makes the game way more interesting, and it feels amazing to hit a nice draw when I’m actually expecting to. Mike is an amazing teacher.

@@Thegooob95 I feel fortunate to have found Mike's instructions. So many great lessons. I used to come from way under with my trail (right) hand and then try to flip to square the face at contact. Getting that right hand on top also got me in a natural position to really compress irons so that's a completely different feeling in a great way. I'll a pull balls every now and then but I think that's my mind reminding me of my old swing and how I used to be flippy at contact.
