Күн бұрын

This is from our first LIVE stream on KZfaq. We'll be exploring a series of LIVE episodes this year that explore what golf fundamentals are keeping you from playing your best.
Like with any lesson, I always like to start with GRIP. In this episode I talk about my history as a golfer, what I've learned about how I like to put my hands on the club, the role of both hands in the golf swing and how to check your grip to be sure it's right for you. At the end, I also took some viewer questions to help clarify elements of each topic.
Don't just play golf. Understand it.
You can learn step by step online with Mike at malaskagolf.com. Follow The M-System to develop the skills you need to become a complete player.

I come from a physical medicine profession and I love anatomy and technique. This is definitely the very best video on HOW TO GRIP THE CLUB by far. Also that the left limb and the right limb have their own specific role. Brilliant. Many years ago I introduced a friend to golf and after her first game, where she shot in the low 90’s she said “ So what is so difficult about this game” and I can remember answering “ you wait ‘til you learn how to hit the ball properly then you will realise how difficult golf can be.”

Usually I think a video about grip should only take 3 minutes but this 30 minute video was worth every second.

One thing i always atruggled with was this: at setup there is an angle between the arms and the club, and with low grip pressure the club and arms will want to be in a straight line during the downswing. This results in the clubface being opening at impact, and the ball taking off to the right. I've tried to forcefully keep the setup angle intact during impact, which can only be done with tight hands and arms, and it gives very inconsistent results. Now you talk about the strong left hand grip, and that makes perfect sense! With the club and arms extended to a straight line, the clubface is square! 😊. Thanks for your videos.

An update, Tonight at the range I made the change in my grip, just as Mike suggested. Took me 3 or 4 swings to get it sorta right. Still have to Relax my shoulders, arms and hands more, but I was able to hit my 23 * rescue 195 yrds carry, swing speed ramped up to an amazing 110 mph. Now, some may say, that's not all that great, but, I'm 72, have a curved & twisted spine, and arthritis in my lower back, Once I get more relaxed I expect to see even better results. So, a Huge thank you Mike..

I was a confident free swinging, John Daly style swinger, 3 hdcp at 30 years old. Was “advised” to shorten my backswing and I could be scratch. I played twice a week. Those first ever lessons ( the Ballard connection) destroyed my love for golf and my confidence. This is the BEST teaching, preaching I’ve ever heard. At 72 my hdcp is 13. I went out last time and using Mikes ideas and shot 39/41/80 with 36 putts. There’s HOPE! Blessings Mike!

I'm glad I watched this again. I used to play with a left hand grip that was so strong, a friend called it "a three knuckle grip with the wrong three knuckles".😏 In an effort to become more orthodox, I made it a lot more neutral. It's been years of frustration. Every time I get the nerve to try my old grip again, it just works, but it's so odd, I feel like I have to return to something more orthodox. When I bend over and hang my left arm, as you suggest, my hand falls right into the position of my crazy strong left hand grip. So, I'm off to the range to take back my game. Thanks, Mike.🙏🏻

I changed my grip to match my natural arm position (stronger) and moved the grip into my fingers as you demonstrate.. The results were hard to believe honestly. Ball flight went 15 yds farther with a slight draw. What a simple change with an enormous impact. Thank you so very much for this video. Made golf much more fun. I am a mid high 70's player. Soon to be even with your instruction. Sincerely appreciate your work.

I had no idea how "neutral" my grip had become until I viewed this video. I was one who opened the clubface in the first 12 inches of takeaway and spun it back for contact. I hit some decent shots from time to time and got my HC down to 7. After a great round two weeks ago (one-over) everything fell out is sync and my last two rounds were 92s - one being in league competition. After viewing this video I decided to commit to changing my grip and I watched Mike's balancing video. Just came back from the range and wow! If a lightning storm wasn't approaching I could have easily stayed there for another two hours. It was fun again, much less effort, and I could finally feel the club in front of me and slightly moving me back to lever the shaft. A really nice pattern appeared and my 140yd- 8 iron was now 7-10 yards further. Thank You Again Mike

You described me to a T! I stumbled onto the idea of strengthening my grip because I had a neutral grip and I tended to cup my wrist. This resulted in timing issues in squaring up the face. I tried a strong grip as a last resort to get some consistency and I was amazed!! This led me to search for more information and I found this video. Feels good to know that the fix I "discovered" is a legit way to play.

Mr. Malaska, I have never had control over the ball like I had today. I was effortlessly commanding the clubface and damn did it feel good. Golf instruction today is how to change gears, where learning the grip is like knowing how to operate the clutch. Your instruction and communication ability is world class. Not a wasted word and this video might just be the most important 30 minutes I have ever spent learning about the golf swing. Thank you, it really sunk in and was a pleasure to learn from you.

Mike hi. Great lesson! Here’s a mini aha moment I got from this video; The reason a lot of practice swings are perfect and then followed by bad shots is because with a practice shot the brain knows there’s no ball to hit straight and so has no need to make compensations. The moment you step up to the ball it’s a different story. No wonder you often hear “ I mess up as soon as I have a ball in front of me”

Dear Mike, I thank you for all the good advice and your sincere and humble way of saying them. It seems to me as if any player's optimal grip is a grip that fits posture and body - joints, length of limbs and spine etc. Body geometry is individual. A grip that does not depend on a deliberate rotation of the forearms, or other manipulation actions, should be beneficial to all golfers. Perhaps is that "a neutral grip" for some players? You advocate a strong grip (for you). Shawn Clement does the same, Fred Couples is another. We all know that Freddie shot 60 on Sunday at the Champions Tour a month ago, at the age of 63.

Mike, I watched this video and have watched golf instruction videos my whole life. (I'm 76) I played baseball as a young man, and my last season (after high school--Class B level- at about 18-19 years old) I hit .388. I was able to hit an 80-90 MPH pitched ball well until almost 70 years old. I STILL can do it sometimes!--but Mike, here's the range of my golf handicap my whole life (10-22 where I am today). In other words I'm REALLY bad at golf.--I think you are REALLY good at what you do and you ALMOST understand how to teach really bad golfers like me. Sadly, it's ALMOST. You teach really well for people with single digit handicaps and below. But nope, you STILL don't reach guys and gals like me.I'll demonstrate what I mean. Here's the kind of stuff that's in OUR heads. "If I just keep my arms loose in their sockets, and let my wrists swing loose like you demonstrate, my left wrist cups deeply on my backswing, BUT my right wrist is VERY flexed which seems correct, and then at the last minute before impact the club DOES pull and run into the ball. However the ball either 1) duck hooks, 2) slices, 3) thins, or 4) hits fat and everywhere in between. If I manage to hit it square, I can hit the ball 250 yards (driver), but most of the time I hit it about 170. (I can also hit a 6 iron 170)"--now, you might say "well you're just a head case".--Maybe. But I was always a good athlete EXCEPT for golf. I also am a producer here in LA with a lot of film and advertising experience. That stuff I KNOW I'm good at. Let's get together and I'll show you the correct "bad golfer questions" so you can improve the 10, 20, 30 handicap plus players. We'll call it "Swing Thoughts From The Dark Side"😂

when I first started playing golf my friend who was a golfer set up my grip interlocking with a strong grip and a few other things. I remember how awkward it felt at first but I hit it good with a small slice with driver, straight with irons.I was in my 20,s and I loved to swing with my whole body aggressively over time I lost that whole swing. Your videos are bringing me back to that grip and everything is naturally falling into place my hip shoulders feet and trusting the swing and just letting it go. I feel 40 years younger.

69 years old, multiple physical issues, couldn't hit a sand wedge more than 30 yards. I changed my grip according to this series and hey presto, 50-55 yards with the sand wedge. Mike, Im so glad I found your youtube page a year ago. I have had the same experience as you. Im not on your level of play but I went through the same stages as you. I was naturally good on my own. I shot very consistent gold usually around 80, 81ish. I had some flaws which some early lessons fixed. Then I started with some real lessons in my early 20's and some stuff work but mostly I kept getting worse and worse when they changed my grip and had me rolling the club as well. I was told the toe of the club up at hip high was square. I had a strong left hand and was told I needed to weaken it. All the same stuff. It was a blessing to find you and tell me the stuff I was told was bad was actually good stuff. I have now found consistency again.. I understand it so much better. I was a horrible layer offer of the club and I know now the the stuff I was taught to fix it actually made it worse. So glad to be back on the right path now.

Excellent video. So many videos out there on increasing lag and holding wrist angles and making sure you don’t flip. What they never say is that everybody releases their wrist angles or “flips” the club at some point. The key is when the flip happens in conjunction of course with rotation.

Hello Mike, I should thank Be Better Golf for all his hard work and getting out there to bring in the greats like yourself. Through Be Better Golf I found your channel. I also want to thank you for share your insight on the golf grip. I was having the very same issue where originally I used a strong grip by mere accident. To later be told that the grip I was using was going to cause inconsistent shots. After that I was forced to learn to play a fade that started out as a 60 yard slice. Early on I had to aim way left if I wanted to keep it in the fair way. After awhile I was able to tame that slice and produced a fade. But never hit a draw until recently when I started playing around with my grip. I simply truned my left hand clockwise laid my right hand over it and BAM! It was going to the left. It took some tweeking to turn a hook into a draw. But magically I was hitting a draw, the first ever. The lecture you give in this video really helped me understand what was actually happening. I can't thank you enough. I'm still fairly new to Golf ⛳️ and have alot to learn, I totally get it now the grip is where it all starts. Thanks again Mack...

Mr. Malaska, Important stuff here Sir! Your work is producing some quite profound results in my personal and professional life. Listening, watching, & learning intently is serving well, not only on the practice putting greens, the range and course, but also in my professional endeavors. I am taking many of your poignant words, concepts, and ideas along while working with clients in basketball skills training, and when coaching H.S. Bball. Your examples and experience w/body mechanics (& how those few years probably produced lesser results ) was refreshing to hear, as I have had similar issues. Why waste time? Use what works for you in this “art form”. Yes, science is great for sports, but there’s a time and place, and time is of the essence, and there’s no time waste!? To sum it it up...I appreciate you Sir, and it is great to have access to your channel! Stay UP! Coach Lambert

I am 77 with knee issues, and have watched a lot of confusing videos promising more yards if you do as they show you! I no I can't hit the ball 250 yards. Your videos are excellent and well explained! I look forward to watching more! Thank you, Mike

Mike i swear you don't have the recognition you deserve! I almost switched to the jim venetos golf swing 🤣 lol i pulled a muscle in my back last week and i have a game against my best bud this Sunday and i was getting frustrated and desprate! but needless to say Mike talks in a way that i understand . and along the way i added a tremendous amount of yardage to my irons ! i was hitting my irons to the "average distance" but today i was hitting my pw 170 yds cary !9&8 were going to and past the 200 mark unbelievably straight 🤯 i was only hitting bad shots after 3/4 great shots bc im not 100% healed from my back so naturally my body would interfier BUT now i know how to correct it THANKS TO MIKE! in fact im actually in pain bc i got carried away showing off again 🙄 bc its haliarious you got all the guys out there with $1000 clubs and im out there hitting power bilt muscle back blades that are 20+ years old like nothing 🤷‍♂️. but question i really dont understand why i was hitting that far & while im under pain? was i adding loft to the irons? bc i was getting beautiful ball hieght as well? i hit my 4 iron a good 260 plus like a bullet incredibly straight and im being generous with the 260 it was dark already so i would loose the ball but im saying more like 280. 30+ ppl at this range and no one came close to driving that far. only thing i added to my shot was that flick of the right hand ? or is it bc im in a stronger more comfortable grip ?

I hooked a club to something then pulled like his doctor did. I found if I held lightly my grip spun around as it slid down the shaft to the same position every time, if I started weak or strong, spun to same spot, a little stronger than my old grip. Same result when doing the hanging method or just seeing what felt good pulling hard, but thought I'd share this as it gives me perfect confidence this will help me with my unintentional fade on all my shots!

Thank you for clarifying the golf grip and what a golf swing consists of. i have discontinued previous swing, and am now swinging easily and effortlessly after only one practice !! and im only swinging the club with 50 or maybe 60 % power...the ball just clips along with beautiful trajectory and length. I swing the club now with no rigidity or horrible swing thoughts lol. I'd been swinging that all my life and thought it was suppose to be that difficult...was I ever wrong. This is such a game changer, literally. i am still in the infancy stage this natural swing and i cannot wait to go out to the again and have purpose in my practice. I can fade or draw the ball now or simply hit it straight. i appreciate all the work and research you put into this, and I am so fortunate to have found your online teachings. Looking forward to watching more of your videos, and playing golf soon :) Rob Beaulieu, Barrie Ontario, Canada.

You have talked around this in the past. But this is by far the most honest, thorough, logical review of your travails as a young pro. There's not an amateur golfer alive who hasn't dreamed of playing well, and hit a million balls, taken hundreds of lessons, all without reaching his desired goals. I was a short wrist whipper. I wasn't bad as a youth, but I wish I'd found you forty years ago. Peter Kennedy MD. p.s. your advice regarding my balance problem is slowly helping. Thanks for all your insights!

I played to a 3 handicap by the age of 17, gave the game away for 35 years, come back to golf 6 years back got a lesson and had grip changed (to neutral opposing palms) and have never been able to find the feel I had as a young fella. just picked up a club and extended my arms adjusted the face square when straight, addressed a ball,, hey presto, back to my old days strong grip, cant wait to get to the range to give it a crack. Great Information Mike, Thank you

Nice Video as always Mike! I was a tennis player for 6 yrs and the very first time I placed my left hand on a golf club, I instinctively used the so-called "strong grip" and swang very naturally and athletically. However, my first golf instructor who was a very nice man but very old-school told me and forced me to change to a "neutral" grip and shift weight to the right during the backswing, both arms lifting high, and flip hands during the impact....etc the whole nine-yard stuff you knew about and I had to use so many kinds of wrist and shoulder compensations to square my clubface. After 2 yrs, I injured my lower back and my left elbow injured with "tennis elbow". How sarcastic!!!! 6 yrs of playing tennis with no injury but 2 yrs of playing golf got me "tennis elbow". lol.....that was when I started searching for golf tips during my recovery period. Your videos help me.....especially the grip part. Now I am a Stack& Tilter and with your "strong grip", it feels so natural and my lower body can turn smoothly, and my arms/hands can rotate with my torso. What a great feeling!! THANK YOU!

For someone who is starting to play or interested to start - START WITH THIS. THIS IS GOLD!! I play off a 5.2 index and have played with a strong grip for the past 20y. It's still hard for me to hook the ball - even with the strong grip - so there is no truth that a strong grip will breed hookers. My predominant flight, even with the strong grip, is still a soft 5 yard fade.

Rather than say "there is no truth that a strong grip will breed hookers" I would prefer to say that there is no "guarantee" that it will breed hookers, but it will certainly help to minimise slice or reduce the amount of fade. Stick with what you know and trust - your soft 5 yard fade. Great stuff!

Love your stuff mike, would love to give people some insight. Remember when we were kids and the baseball coach could hit the ball straight too you either on the ground or in the air. He just knew where he was going before he swung. Thats why when i practice i try to call my shots and curve them there, left right high or low. It really helps if your focused on how you want to hit it than just where your aiming.

I had a similar experience. I was a small kid and didn't sprout up until I was 16-17. But at 5'2" 120 lbs I could outdrive most adults and even one of the best players in the USAF. Started with a very strong grip and would come out of my shoes with a driver. Could hit it about 240 yds in the air w/ a huge backswing...I was sort of like Crenshaw. But stuff went downhill as I started to change my grip and weaken it.
