Ever heard of malassezia? No? You're not alone! This organism is not very well known, but it is actually a huge contributing factor toward skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, tinea versicolor, and certain types of acne.
My guest today, Dr. Julie Greenberg, is a licensed ND who specializes in integrative dermatology.
She is the founder of the Center for Integrative Dermatology, a holistic dermatology clinic that approaches skin problems by finding and treating the root cause.
Dr. Greenberg hold degrees from Northwestern University, Stanford University and Bastyr University, and received advanced clinical training at the Dermatology Clinic at the University of Washington Medical School and at the Pediatric Dermatology Center at Seattle Children’s Hospital.
She is also the Program Chair of the Naturopathic & Integrative Dermatology series on LearnSkin.com, a learning platform for integrative health care professionals.
Join us as we talk about malassezia, a bug that is responsible for several fungal skin problems.
SHOW NOTES:
• What is malassezia?
• What's the relationship between malassezia and seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff)?
• Why is the skin pH important? What happens when the pH of the skin is too high?
• Is there a test to look for malassezia?
• What other skin conditions are linked to malassezia?
• Are there any topical or dietary solutions for malassezia?
• Why you should not apply undiluted essential oils directly to the skin

So I developed Malassezia all the gross i.e. SD, after correcting a overgrowth of candida in 2020 wearing a mask all the time created a moist environment for the yeast to overgrow . I wanted to know if lactic acid would help because it’s a lower pH. Would it lower the pH of my skin I suffer from facial dandruff due to the Malassezia. I have tried rosemary on my scalp rosemary water, because the oil is too strong and it really helped. I’m not sure if I should be using rosemary water on my skin as well. I don’t like essential oils they just seem too aggressive.

Great content, but what are those creepy roaring animal noises in the background when Dr. Greenberg speaks. Is she calling in live from the local zoo?

When did you hear weird noises? There shouldn't be any issues like that in the audio

@@jenfugo At 18:22h for instance, 19:19h, 20:09h, 20:17h, 20:38h, 22:19h, particulary loud at 22:58h (sounds similar to a mechanized lion roar to me) etc. a low rumbling and/or higher pitched wind blowing noise, maybe passing traffic? I have 2 decent sized Edifier speakers connected to my desktop and a sharp hearing, maybe the frequencies involved are only noticeable on larger speaker sets? The audio is perfectly fine when you're speaking Jennifer, the weird background sounds are definitely happening at Dr. Greenbergs side. Nevertheless i instantly subscribed because of the nuanced high quality information you so generously shared, thank you!

@@DerSnoeziewoezie thanks so much! We took a listen and unfortunately it was background road noise on the guest's side of things so we couldn't eliminate it. Definitely not ideal, but it is what it is. We try to control sound as best as possible but some people live in busy areas and even using a headset can still end up with road noise

@@jenfugo Thank you for your reply. Besides oldschool "fluffy buffs" for your microphone to surpress background noise i think there are several software audio filters that can block out noise instantly at the input side or more agressively in post production. Quality of the processed audio might be slightly affected though. In this particular case i think based on the frequency range of the background noise compared to that of the guests' voice and the difference in intensity levels you might be able to filter it out with relative easy and neglible loss of audio quality. Such a tool might be valuable improving the quality of future recordings, so try your luck with google to see what's on offer in noise blocker territory.
