When u talk of Malayalam cinema the Hindi audience needs to realise that some of their most celebrated movies were actually Malayalam original movies..priyadarsan came about and took the stories to a different level in a different language which was nice tbh..when I hear about the latest buzz on Hera pheri 3..i remember our own original Ramjirao speaking..which was an actual gem of a movie..

Even those originals were inspired or copied from English movies..so nobody is a saint here..but the ability to adapt into local language is top notch..comic timings , dialogues and performance and even the aesthetics are top class.no other industry can match those aspects

Bollywood industry also has quality Realistic movies most of them are better than Malayalam Realistic movies after 2015. But it always remains underrated infront of Star kid movies or Stardom movies that run the industry. Superstardom movies or Celebration or Comedy movies are reason for sustaining every Industry including Malayalam. It should be happened in every 3 months of time otherwise it causes the industry in dim just like Malayalam movies fall in early 2000s .There are just 10% of people among movie lovers prefers Realistic Cinema others are watching because it has great appreciation from critics eventhough audience never understand or dislikes that movie they just go with flow. Actually Almost 90 % of movie lovers prefers Mass Comedy Celebration type movie or Villain Centred movie Realistic Cinema is for 10% audience loves to watch. Out of 100 Realistic movies in a year only 1 or 2 hits at box-office. Hit rate of these types of movies causes the whole industry turns into a big margin of loss. May be producers get Realistic movies money from ott but for movie lovers and Theatre owners it's just a burden

I think also one of the reasons why we don’t associate Mass Commercial cinema so much with Malayalam movies is because the audience are very questioning in the sense that, if you stitch together a Mass movie with actions that defy our understanding of what is technically physically possible, without being able to convince the audience extremely well that in fact he/she has some super powers, we’ll easily cringe or laugh it off. I mean, I think the Malayali audience can accept Mass more when it is done in other industries by other actors, but when our own actors do that, we can be very sceptical. I think we are quite used to the format of cinema being as closer to real life as possible that when we see something that strays so further away from reality, it puts us off easily. I think it is also one of the reasons why our movies were not quite appealing to us in the early 2000s, when we moved away from the real life narrative formats and tried to follow what the other south industries were doing. Action or commercial or anything, but don’t question the audience’s intelligence!

Malayali audiences have no issues with mass movies, most of the biggest hits came from malayalam industry are mass movies.... We don't like over mass scenes which we feel funny like the villain fly over a long distance with a small touch from the hero, or a car flies when the hero kicks it... All movies are setting in it's own logical world... If a superhero does like this, then that movie is within it's logical world, if hero is a normal human being, it feels like a cringest scene... The movie needs a proper explanation and a make belief to the scene........ In KGF, all what is showing as mass scenes are feels like believable because of its making... That's called make belief in movies..... Thus KGF is highly appreciated by the malayali audiences, if it was in other so called mass masala illogical genre, then it won't get this welcoming in Kerala........ So if a mass movie like KGF is made from malayalam, then definately it will became a huge success here for sure...... We have no problem with mass movies, only we don't like some over action movies, that's all👍🏻

I feel it is because majority of the heroes - Jayan, Madhu, Mammooty, Mohanlal, Shobhana, Urvashi, Murali, Joju George many more - they came in with almost nothing, risking many things. They were true to their heart - and that reflected in screen. They liked acting so they came, not because of the money or power. Not just heroes, many other actors as well. This mindset along with luck and similarly passionate script writers and directors combined helped Malayalam movies become great. I think it was just a lucky time for all of us.

Strength of the malayalam cinema is its literature. Story writers getting equal importance here. Stories are so deep rooted to our culture. Writers like MT, Lohithadas, Padmarajan, their stories were the back bone of malayalam industry. And I think thats legacy is whats that makes malayalam cinema different from other industry.

For d literature loving Malayali movie buffs like myself, Bahubali is lion king played by actual humans n similar success which that movie has found can be replicated in Malayalam with only0.1 % coz a deserving script has nvr been unearthed yet. For us, it’s content over form, any day !!! Not a Prithviraj fan for d very same reasons. He has been trying to bring both very badly, however to no avail. There’s that fine line that has to be crossed or needs to be maintained for making such a movie in Malayalam.

One thing that we need to understand is there is no need for a Malayalam movie to showcase the grandeur or the budget something similar to RRR or KGF or Baahubali. The producers will never put that much amount of money due to multiple reasons: 1. The theatre tickets in Kerala cost from Rs.40-Rs.150/- even in the metropolitan cities like Kochi. 2. They have screens around of radius of 2-3 kms. but the ticket costs are so less that it becomes difficult to project those numbers. 3. Malayalam movies hardly run for 1 week or max 2 weeks with limited shows (even movies of superstars) in other metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Bangalore etc. 4. Now if you compare with Kantara, I would say Kantara was a one off and it is difficult to project same numbers again unless the story is relatable.

As a Malayali and an 80s kid, I have grown up watching several Malayalam films. A mass Malayalam film is a little odd because that charm of Malayalam films compared to other South Indian language films is the subtlety, natural and almost realistic stories. There is no larger than life drama, suspending disbelief, etc compared to say Tamil or Telugu. However, I feel that a true Malayalam mass film should be made but we have quite a long way to go for that because our whole film making perception has to change to defy our core Malayali audience where say they just accept that we can also do it our own way but make it grandiose like say an RRR with strong memorable story lines. The problem is that attempts were made by Prithiviraj on 'Lucifer' and Basil Joseph's 'Minal Murali'... I am sorry to say that both films were below average. Total waste of a concept and plot.... these films could have been great but it just did not click. 'Minal Murali' was partly hyped more than its actual worth. 'Lucifer' seemed to give more importance to the starcast in it than the story and the plot was a mess of ideas. Mass movies do not happen just because by default you are spending millions and throwing in a bunch of legends. I think the best approach to take is not to go with this notion that we are going to make a "mass movie" but more by being free and at the same time being true to our roots like how 'Kantara' did for Kannada (which almost reminded me of Malayalam films).

We do make shit movies as well. The latest one is "Monster" played by Mohanlal and "Christopher" done by Mammotty. And, guess what? They went to the trash bin after the first day and there are trillions of trolls on social media about these crap movies. The thing is that we do not like stories that don't make sense even if it is done by a megastar and even he will be trolled left and right. The biggest strength is the matured audience. We do like to watch mass mega action movies from tamil, telugu and hindi as well and treat them as entertainment only. But, when it comes to Malayalam, there is no compromise in the quality of the content and the script writers and directors know about it. That's why they make cult classics like ee.mai. yau, kumbalangi nights, ayyappanum koshiyum, kala, The great Indian kitchen and many other quality movies. A simple story line happens in a small village or a simple incident and the rest is in the hands of script writers, directors , DOP, music directors and of-course actors.

Like current state of Hollywood, mollywood also become a woke film industry..... Only woke feminism movies ....that too forced wokisam and forced political correctness.....it's more like watching a online class on political correctness....no story .....only few dir like LJP , dileesh , basil , ratish balkrishna potuval ect make some real movies.....rest all flow with the wind....more like extend version of shortfilm iam also from Kerala....we need to relay on Tamil or Telugu for an entertainer or thriller or horrer ....that's why kgf and kantara collecting crors from Kerala.... I want thet 80s and 90s type Malayalam cinema.....the real Malayalam cinema

What political correctness was being forced in Jaya Jaya Jaya hai. Is saying domestic violence shouldn't be tolerated political correctness? Most female oriented Malayalam movies of recent times only calls out the social evil in our society and nothing else but you seems to have a problem with the bare minimum. Also there is nothing called real Malayalam movie. 80s and 90s are past and most of those stories don't work in the socio political situation of the current world. People's values and outlook on life changed drastically from the 80s and 90s.

Who said Malayalam cinema is popular?? Any statistics? If you are talking about awards, then it is not public opinion. Still a Malayalam cinema can't have a pan Indian release not followed by people from other states.
@WriteChords
@WriteChords Жыл бұрын
Yes Sir, you are right in aspects like no Pan-Indian movies similar to RRR or KGF. But having said that, malayalam movies focus more on content and technical aspects like acting, since the native target audience is lesser in numbers and also since it is not a big industry in terms of business size. However, in the last 5 to 6 years have gained popularity among non-native speakers as well, strictly going by the popular opinions of many stalwarts in their interviews from other industries. I am not aware about the movies' popularity vis-a-vis other industries, but more popular outside Kerala alone, which was the case few years back. This is mainly due to the variety it offers by making more films with realistic content. However, art wise malayalam movies used to win awards in national level categories from the time they have been introduced, considering its small market size.

@@WriteChords good movies are flop in Kerala itself. Movies like Mahaveeryar and Nanpakal nerath mayakkam are flop in Kerala. So how movies are going to gain popularity in other states?
@WriteChords
@WriteChords Жыл бұрын
@@swamybro They are good movies for some people, but majority may be looking for something else. But that doesnt mean movies are not popular in other states. Being an avid movie lover, I think you are well-informed about movies which have done well outside Kerala. Since I am settled outside of Kerala , I know a lot of people, friends, colleagues and acquaintances across age groups who still await releases of new malayalam movies and I see lots of them in theatres as well, coming in groups. But yes - movies like Premam and Hridayam are few these days. A movie like Nna thaan case kodu may be a hit in Kerala, however may not be liked by non-keralites since it deals with state politics - so lots of factors, I guess. Anyways thanks for your observations and comments.
