Welcome to MALAYSIA in 2022!! This time I'm on BORNEO in East Malaysia's Sabah state capital : Kota Kinabalu! We're kicking things off at the Donggongon Weekly Market home to Kadazan traditional cuisine such as "butod" or sago worms. Not for the faint of heart, these grubs can be enjoyed cooked or raw like me.
After our morning at the market a proper lunch was in order. Sabah's iconic Ngiu Chap or beef noodle was on the menu for today at Penampang Ngiu Chap.
To visit Kota Kinabalu without sampling the seafood would be a sin. This city may very well be home to the CHEAPEST seafood I've ever seen. How about 2kg fresh King Lobster, a football sized coconut clam, seaweed salad and a couple hand-fulls of scallops for $100. Have it cooked anyway you like, its guaranteed to taste good. Unless of course your coconut clam also turns into a rubber tire when cooked.
Video Chapters:
0:00-0:45 Intro
0:46-7:23 Donggongon Market
7:24-9:32 Penampang Ngiu Chap
9:33-19:36 Waterfront Seafood Market
19:37-20:03 Outro

Btw those “worms” are actually the larvae of a beetle that live inside the trunk of the sago palm tree… known as butod in sabah or ulat mulong in sarawak… i prefer sago in my desserts and stay away from the worms 😅

@@LukeMartin Do you know how old that beautiful king lobster would have been? Given it's size I'd say it would have been getting on for 100 years, don't get me wrong, I eat all kinds of seafood, including lobster, but I'd never eat something that was older than my parents.

Luke, these spiny lobsters certainly looked yummy! Panulirusfemoristriga longipes is a common species in Malaysia. Local fishermen consider them in general as red lobster (local term ‘udang karang merah’). Local fishermen usually categorize lobsters according to their color. For example, P ornatus is commonly called blue lobster while P versicolor is known as green lobster. Therefore, it is possible that P emoristriga has been mistaken for P longipes due to their very similar physical appearance, such as coloration and the white spot on their abdomen. However, further study is required to determine whether the species was often being mistaken or that it is rare in Malaysia. Further information about marine biodiversity is strongly linked to the resolve to protect the natural riches of the globe, particularly marine life. Considering that spiny lobsters are target fish industry species, it is crucial for its sustainable fisheries management to acquire biological knowledge.

Thanks for bringing back memories of my visit to Kota Kinabalu! It was a weird trip. I went with my Chinese Malaysian friend and spent the whole trip doing family things with a bunch of overbearing aunts who treated us both like we were 12 ( I was nearly 30 with a full time office job and a mortgage). There were all these complex Chinese family dynamics happening that I couldn't quite grasp and I never quite knew what was going on because of the language barrier. Oh, we're at a Mandarin language church service? Dinner at a cousin's house? A stranger's wedding reception? OK! I barely got to see any sights but it felt like a pretty intimidating, possibly unsafe place to travel without a local, so it may have been for the best, and we did have some incredible meals!

Luke, for best taste of fresh seafood, the best taste of it is either eat it raw or steam it, use the less sauce to destroy the nature of the seafood. That would be the best taste. nothing fancy.....If you dont mind of going out the sea, you should also try deep sea fishing here in KK. Your catch can be made as fresh raw sashimi steaight away. The taste is upmost, nothing can compete even with the seafood you get from the market.
