Hi everyone. It has been quite a while since I did a reading guide on my channel. The last time was for The Realm of the Elderlings almost two years ago. Today, I am back with a reading guide for Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson. I will also do a brief breakdown of each book in the main series. And I will let you know my personal ranking for them. The purpose of this video is simple, to help and guide first-time readers of the series to succeed at finishing it. If you have read Malazan Book of the Fallen, let me know what you think about the series. It is one of my top favorite series of all time, and I truly hope more readers will pick up and love the series. :)

The weird thing about the Malazan series is its limited availability in print form. There are the mass market paperbacks, which for the most part should be available, and after that is is sheer chaos. Some TPB are available, some are out of print, across different editions / lines (I assume us / uk), some hardcovers exist, some do not... A mess!
@PetrikLeo

Yeahhh seriously. Outside of mass market paperback and Kindle edition, it's insanely hard to collect the series in other matching editions. 🥲
@3choblast3r4
@3choblast3r4 Жыл бұрын
I feel like hardcovers should be the default. Big, nice hardcovers are the only physical books I care for, and generally they don't cost that much more than a paperback esp if the book has released a long time ago.
@mormengil
@mormengil Жыл бұрын
@@3choblast3r4 I don't think that is really the case. Usually they are 3-4 times the price of a paperback, only in special cases are Hardcovers anywhere near the same price...

Great guide Petrik. I think encouraging voices are important, as this series has a reputation of being beyond the reach of people or needlessly cryptic. I don't think people need to be intimidated as much as people tend to be. It just needs to be read when you are in the mood for slowing down your reading journey. It is a great series but only as good as what you are willing to put into it... as is the case with plenty of books that can be a bit more demanding. You can breeze through the books and enjoy the surface plot fine enough, but there is some seriously very special if you are willing to stop and dig down in places to try and really understand some of the deeper things to be found.
@PetrikLeo

Petrik, I really have to commend you for this video and all of your love for the Malazan series in the past. I was gifted the entire collection on my kindle a few months ago, and have been way too nervous to try it out. There are so many negatives out there, but also so many positives. It kind of put me off of the series for a long time when people say it’s difficult to read. I think after watching this video, it’s time to start Gardens of the Moon. Thanks for finally giving me that push I needed.

Petrik, I am starting book 4, House of chains, this week. I am excited as I already think this is the best series i have ever read and I still have 6 books left. In order to not feel any fatigue, I have been mixing in other books as i go. I read Gardens of the Moon-Meories of Ice. Read Lonesome Dove and The Will of the Many ( which I will finish tomorrow). Next, I will read Ryan Cahills first novella (The fall) and then I will start book 4 of Malazan afterwards and probably alternate back and forth with the Bound and Broken series. There are definitely “things” I missed, forgot, or didn’t understand it every book, but I pushed through because the overall world, themes, and writing is so amazing. I heard the Broken Binding is going to be making their own books for the series in 2024. I hope so, hardcovers are soooooo expensive due to the lack of availability. But YES! MALAZAN IS SO AMAZING SO FAR!! SPOILER My favorite character is Kruppe. 😂 I pronounce it like this… Krup-uh. How do you pronounce it. Some people find him annoying. But I find him hilarious, and apparently hilariously overpowered. FOR EXAMPLE: when Caladan Brood swings his hammer and everyone gets thrown around but Good Ole Kruppe is still just chillin like nothing happened. Someone get that man some more cake. Also, Anomander Rake is pretty awesome. A freaking floating Moon fortress!?! A sword named Dragnipur. Etc etc etc This series is the Bee’s Knees, the Cats meow, and Kruppe’s dream. 😂

Thank you so much! I hope you enjoy The Will of the Many, Ryan Cahill's books, and Malazan! I can't wait for The Broken Binding edition of Malazan. It's about time we get an affordable hardcover version of Malazan BotF! That scene you mentioned between Kruppe and Memories of Ice are so badass!!

First I would say excellent video, Petrik. Secondly the thing I find having seen a lot of rankings is: due to the way the series is written you can tell what story lines a person likes by the way they order the books. Finally here is my ranking, for whatever that is worth to anyone. 1. The Crippled God - Pretty easy number 1. It is brilliant and the ending forever changes the other books. 2. Toll the Hounds --Brilliant book with, imo, the best final sequence (excluding TCG series finale) 3. Reaper's Gale --Probably the hottest take but I love Tehol and Bugg and Lether, Redmask was great for me. 4. Midnight Tides-- Again I love everything Lether. 5. Memories of Ice -- Fantastic book with one of the best endings. 6 The Bonehunters -- Great book. Certainly one of the most action packed books, I have the hot take that the ending is the best chapter not chapter 7. 7. House of Chains -- Another hot take but I loved the Karsa stuff and the continuation of book 2 storylines. 8. Deadhouse Gates -- Great book overall, Chain of dogs is epic. 9. Dust of Dreams -- I still enjoyed this book but It had the most moments of "why is this here" on the first read. After finishing the series it all makes sense though. 10. Gardens of the Moon --- None of these books are even close to bad but this one is the weakest overall imo. The story is fun and epic enough to hook me but I am comparing it to other Malazan books not fantasy books in general, so it's last.

Great video and I mostly agree about your ranking. I also agree about Ian Esslemont. The writing might get better, but his writing style does not change. And there is just something about his structure, that is not for me. Steven Erikson commented on the duel you mention in Toll the Hound. He actually roleplayed in a ttrpg, and the conclusion was made on a single dice roll. Could have been a different story, if the dice had landed different :)

Excellent! May I suggest reading at least one of the Bauchelain and Korbal Broach novellas before Memories of Ice. I'm currently re-reading the whole thing (second readthrough), this time including the ICE-books. Currently on House of Chains, and even though it is probably my least favorite, I still get moments of "Holy crap this is brilliant, why bother reading anything else when I could just re-read Malazan over and over". An interesting thing is that I didn't like MoI nearly as much as the average malazan veteran the first time around. I had expect this to change upon a re-read, but no. It's still not close to be at the top half of my personal Malazan ranking.

Thanks for the suggestion! I think I will give the novellas a try, too, on my next reread. It won't be anytime soon, though. It's interesting that Memories of Ice is not one of your favorites, but that's the beauty of reading! We all have different experiences! 😁

@@PetrikLeo Sorry, must have missed that. I've read only the first three novellas and there's no significance to the main plot but the further it goes the more absurd and funny the stories seem to get. First novella was nothing special but The Healthy Dead was absolutely hilarious to the point I was laughing out loud at places which Erikson didn't manage even in his spoof Star Trek trilogy. It's similar to Tehol and Bugg type of humor except much more morbid.

@@PetrikLeo hey Petrik thanks for responding! I just got to Act 3, I hear it's all about the ending though so I'm looking forward to understanding what the point is! I think my problem is he spends very little time with the characters/plots I'm interested in (mappo/icarium & sorry/fiddler's group) and a LOT of time with the characters/plots that I don't care about (basically everyone else involved in the rebellion). I loved the epic magic & characters & warren diving from GotM and also the assassin/intruige plots, dragons, gods, it's just epic as shit. The PoV jumped around so much that I never got bored because Erikson literally doesn't give you any time to haha. So much happens in GotM that it would take me a while to explain it to someone. I could tell you everything that has happened in Deadhouse gates so far in like 5 sentences haha. It's just much slower and I don't like the characters or think that the plot is interesting (so far). Love your channel bro!

Idk how far youve read of Esslemont but you should try his Path to Ascendancy series. I fucking hated his writing. I think Night of Knives is probably the worst, most amateur writing I've ever read from a big traditional publisher. He has this thing where he does relative clause attachment ambiguity where you dont know what the object of the sentence is. But his writing really really has improved over the years and by now his Path to Ascendancy series actually has good writing thats worth reading.

@@PetrikLeo Yeah I agree both of those books absolutely SUCK. He got decent around book 4 and actually got good by the PtA trilogy. I think it's actually worth reading PtA before a reread of the main ten, because it gives you so much backstory about the first 100yrs of imperial history with how the empire got started and expanded.

To me, the serie went downhill after the Bonehunters. It seems the plot points dont have focus, and there is so much characters who are just rambling all the time. They seem to always ask retorical questions then taking forever to answer themselves the question nobody asked them in the first place, and it happens all the time ! Even the first 80 % of The crippled God was tough for me. Robin Hobb's serie was way more consistent imo and stuck the landing.

I am about to finish House of Chains and I have enjoyed this series very much. My rankings, so far, and this may raise some eyebrows are: 1) Memories of Ice 2) Gardens of the Moon 3) House of Chains 4) Deadhouse Gates The whole Coltain/Chain of Dogs did not resonate with me like it did with many others. I have enjoyed all the books but find it a lot “easier” to follow my favorite cast from Gardens. I vetted this series by watching videos on Malazan for at least a year and a half. I just don’t have the money to spend or the time to commit without vetting a series as “thoroughly” as possible. Videos by you, Jimmy, Philip, and A.P. went a long way to convincing me that there was a good possibility that I would stick through this series. Now I will admit that I am a slow reader. It has taken me 4-6 weeks to finish each installment and I have found having another series like the Dresden Files to read in between as a good break between installments. We yeah, that is my Malazan journey so far and it has been a great one. Thanks for the video Petrik🤓
