For anyone who doesn't know, "I would give everything I own" is about his father. Gates wrote it after his dad passed.

In 1975 I was on a training course based at a hotel in Jesmond, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. I'd arrived on Sunday afternoon and after dinner with others from the same organisation, we all sat down in the lounge to watch some television. As the time neared 20:00 pm, I decided to risk the wrath of my colleagues by going over to the TV set and saying "I hope you don't mind if I switch over to this programme....". It was Glenn Campbell's BBC TV series and special guest this week was David Gates. There was initially some mumbling and muttering from my colleagues but within minutes, they sat in hushed amazement at the music pouring out of the TV. Every song was fantastic but perhaps the most stunning was David Gates' "Clouds Suite".....with Glen riveted to his chair with that performance. At the end of the TV show my colleagues actually applauded, they were so impressed with Glen and David. I've never forgot that performance and I've never seen that show again (the BBC told me that the recording had deteriorated after all the passing years and would not be repeated (other Glen Campbell episodes from the series were repeated, but not this one). I've hoped and prayed that one day this episode would be repeated and tonight, by chance, I stumbled upon it. Malc, thank you so much for posting this.....you have no idea how much this means to me. If ever the "Clouds Suite" segment from this show appears, in ANY format, please let me know. Kind regards from England..... Ken

I was iin the 10th grade in 1970, and this is the first music I every fell in love with on the radio. I was in the orchestra at school, and I feel that David Gates' music has the quality to last forever like Bach or Mozart. There is no comparison to the beauty or feelings invoked by this man's talent. David is a gorgeous man with a beautiful personality and limitless talent. I listen to his music every night as I fall asleep just as I did when I was 16 years old. I am now 66 years old, and I love and appreciate him and his talent more each day that I live. I hope his music continues to permeate my soul even after I pass to the other side, because his music is the closest thing to heaven I can imagine. THANK YOU DAVID FOR SHARING YOUR WONDERFUL TALENT WITH THE WORLD. Linda H.

I understand how you feel; cuz I'm a '73 model and the experience of this special period, was one of only a couple "religeous" ones...the other is Star Wars. There is however, a healthy creative music scene: One must do some looking around to hear the other...scenes--------like try on some Tame Impala, or Blockhead, or Kacey Musgraves.

This song certainly strikes a huge chord with me and in the loss of my dad in August of 84. Just like he penned I'd give all I have up for just one more day with my dad. I really miss and today appreciate what he tried as a father to teach me. Wish before he passed that I told him how much I loved and appreciated him.

Few could match Glen Campbell’s natural guitar playing ability. Glen was a true master of that instrument! The only other guitarist whose masterful talent over his instrument moves me more is the matchless David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. Gilmour is the greatest guitarist of all time in my book. But as far as vocals are concerned, Campbell’s singing is not only better than Gilmours, Glen Campbell’s vocals are GOLDEN and nearly PEERLESS. Gates too is right up there with the best of the best vocalists, but his compositions (both musically as well as lyrically) IS UNMATCHED BY ANY. If I were to describe David Gates songs in only two words it would be these: “SWEETLY TIMELESS”. Bread’s songs will sound just as good 1000 years from now as they do today...and the song “IF”, especially so if it’s Glen Campbell singing it!

I've never been able to pick between "Everything I Own" and "Wichita Lineman" on my all-time genre favorites list, so it's very gratifying to see these two greats together. Glen even mentions Jimmy Webb here, and on that old (1977) all-weekend "History of Rock and Roll" radio show, said that Webb actually had worked as a line repairman in Oklahoma. (BTW, Oklahoma very cleverly names its highways after its noteworthy residents, e.g. Will Rogers, Shannon Miller, Garth Brooks, but I haven't seen one for Webb -- I hope he does have one.)

David Gates was not only a great singer, but a great composer. His love songs are second to none as far as i'm concerned. Just listen to songs like "Diary," "If," and my favorite of his songs, "Aubrey" to hear his tremendous talent. It's hard to believe that this one-time young musician is a ranch cowboy (with his own spread) somewhere in northeastern Washington, and retired now. Glen Campbell is a great guitarist and vocalist. Look kids, people with actual talent, playing actual instruments, singing without any technological assistance. Nearly 50 years ago, and this is still better than any shit out today.

What happened to music? Did technology make everyone lazy? I miss the 70's

Curtis Moffett the expansion of the internet and computer based music in the 2000's. Yes, people have become fake artists

+Curtis Moffett Yep. Lazy, unartistic and undemanding. Remember how in the 70s we would buy an album and then just SIT and listen to it, intently, over and over, and then form an opinion, musically and artfully, about it. We would catalog it in our brain alongside the other albums by that artist, and decide what we liked, what was new, what was cool about it. Yeah, well, people don't do that anymore. They download a few tracks, stuff them into an iPod, and listen to it in the background while they are washing the car.

Everybody thinks they can sing. Thank goodness for AutoTune right? There was a time when singers could really sing without gimmicks.

Grunge pretty much killed it! It made so you didn't need to be able to sing, play an instrument of write lyrics! Then Dance Pop came along with auto tune and choreography being more important and that was the nail in the coffin! Music has never recovered!

I grew up like Grace 60s and 70s. Glen Campbell show etc. Had the albums of Bread. What a song writer . Now a days can't hold a candle to that era of total music variety. I'm 63.
