It took a lot more courage to confront racism in the streets and on the freedom rides in the Deep South where one was exposed to the physical violence of angry mobs, vicious dogs, and rabid police than it did to pose in front TV cameras making grand statements in safe spaces like Harlem, Harvard, and Berkeley, all the while being guarded by hand picked members of the FOI.
