Tolkein was instrumental in Lewis' acceptance of Christ. Their friendship is an outstanding example of how to outreach in a manner that changes lives instead of just annoying people. Lewis of course did not become Catholic like Tolkein but this was never an issue between them. I do not recall the exact wording but Tolkien had to say on the matter of Lewis choosing a different flavor of Christianity something to the effect of, "I am first and foremost a follower of Jesus Christ, and after that I am a Catholic".

I am so glad to find your channel. I've been reading your poetry as well. I discovered Lewis when I was 11. He was my guide to Jesus and Christianity. I remember running to tell my mother about Aslan being Jesus. I read MacDonald's fairy tales and children's books at the same time. I have hard back copies of the Chronicles with Baynes' drawings. Thank you for your poetry. I've introduced my daughter to it and she loves it.

If you ever read Arthur Machen's story "The Great Return," tell us if you liked it. Machen is best known for a few horror stories written early in his career, but "The Great Return" is a wonder-tale in what was then the present day. It's one of my favorite stories. I also love Machen's late story "N." Machen was not personally acquainted with any of the Inklings so far as I know, though Dorothy L. Sayers had a little contact with him, I believe, when she was anthologizing mystery and horror stories. "N" introduces us to the Victorian pastor the Rev. Mr. Hampole -- I think "Hampole" comes from Richard Rolle of Hampole, the late medieval mystic. The quotations from Mr. Hampole's book in this story and in Machen's late novel The Green Round are enticing.

The eagle and child yes! Spent many hours enjoying a guiness in there. Tolkien and CS Lewis would meet up and enjoy pints together there. If you look closely at the pub sign it’s an eagle carrying a baby. This is where Tolkien got the inspiration for the eagles carrying the hobbits from mount doom

Another lovely reading - I don’t think I ever got as far as The Dawn Treader in the series as a kid. I do remember the first time a teacher introduced us to the Narnia books - sitting there in stunned silence and enchantment in the classroom. Listening today, i wonder how much of Lewis himself was in those characters - that part about wanting to be more connected with other humans and all that. Absolutely marvellous.
