Other recommendations for sword channels. Skallagrim who is Canada based, he does plenty of reviews of from budget gear to Albion prices and where to get it in North America. Tod's Workshop has good videos on how swords were worn including the simple suspension methods used in the Viking era. Roland Warzecha/Dimicator has good videos on his ideas of recreating Viking fighting techniques showing that there are a lot better ways than hacking at the other guy, his other content is great too. Thegn Thrand is not my favourite to watch but there's no doubting his enthusiasm and commitment to testing.

When he leans in and says "done and done" was great! You should take a screen shot of that and put it on a Tshirt, along with the quote.

I've got to say, I'm not a sword guy at all and have zero desire to ever own one. However, I enjoy history and I love how you teach and present information so I stayed for the whole video. You did a great job! Two things that I needed to look up after you mentioned them because they weren't explained: what the "fuller" is, and what a "peened pommel" is. Other than that, Mike, keep following your interests and we'll keep following you! PS - Got my first cap and ball revolver a few days ago. Pietta 1861 Navy Sheriff from Dixie Gun Works. Beautiful piece and fast shipping, but the hammer/bolt spring broke after pulling the hammer back about 2 dozen times. Definitely bummed. Luckily, I knew to expect this from your videos and I've got the Wolff spring on the way to fix it (along with the Slix Shot nipples). Can't wait to take her out!

I have several blades made my Windlass Steel craft of India, very well made and fitted, but the edge needed work. So yeah, get what you can afford. I've gone to many a Scottish festival, packing a sword of one type or another, and no one has said anything. Except, the one time a security guard asked me if my sword and axe where real, and I said yes. He looked at his pistol and said "I feel out gunned" I then told him to holler if he got into trouble. And a herd of wild armed Scotsmen would come to his aid. No one needs a sword in this day and age, but there is something wonderful about a well balanced and well made sword. I'm glad you mentions "Point of Status" because swords where not cheap way back when. I prefer a nice one handed bearded axe or long knife for close in work.

I enjoyed this. I have a few Windlass swords and while not perfect they are very good swords. I'm usually buying pumpkins on Halloween afternoon ( when they are discounted ) for some cutting fun. The swords work quite well for this. Like your usual black powder vids but putting in some sword videos is a plus . Good recomendations for sword channels too .

I have been teaching firearms and edged weapons classes for years and I couldn't agree more about the utility of a sword for modern self protection.

Your groups were a little larger than you normally do but all in all, you did a fine job.

If you want to vastly improve that sword’s handling (and aesthetics), do take a heavy file to put a taper on the grip towards the pommel. You will be amazed at the improvement in wielding it. In addition, it will look like the real sword it is. You can also strip the blade to bare steel, cold blue it, and rub it back.

I can attest to Matt Easton's skill base in this field. I've known him from the days of Sword Forum International twenty years back and he proved himself even then to be a knowledgeable and open source of information on not only the swords but the techniques as well.

Nice viedo !!! Don't be bothered by sword snobs ! Some Windlass or Hanwei sword models can be extremely close to museum original in their handling and caracteristics. I have a few of them and really like them. For me a SLO is when it is not made with high carbon steel or made of steel with a lot of nickel and chrome making it brittle; and when the tang is a "rat tail" made of a scew soldiered to the blade (on impact the soldiering can break and the blade can fly away...). Albion swords are beatifull and alwais some of the most historically acurate we can buy not comming from a master swordsmith, but they don't come with a scabbard and are really far far too expensive. My most expensive sword is a Valliant Armoury, not as expensive as an Albion but too expensive for anyone not crasy about swords (at least it comes with a scabbard that is really beatifull).

Good first sword review vid Mike. I'd definitely call that sword fully functional. The anachronistic elements (a hair longer than historical grip area of hilt, one piece lobed pommel as opposed to traditional multi piece hollow construction, modern blued finish instead of polised) take nothing away from the function. That's basically the equivalent of a devent BP revolver replica with a more slightly modern grip profile and finish. I recall Ruger making a couple such firearms. They are still perfectly serviceable revolvers despite not adhering precisely to the originals. Same with the better low end swords. Should we expect a blade stripping and polishing video in future? BTW, Matt is also an avid Blackpowder enthusiast. There's a very good chance he's already familiar with your work.

Nice to see you doing something different. Matt shoots blackpowder so he may well watch you. I wouldn't call that an SLO. There are plenty around though anyone who thinks real swords start at Albion money is a snob. There are bargains to be had that are functional and reasonably accurate, that Maldon looks like one.

I have the Battlecry Acre, I absolutely love it. It too was approved by "Shiv Prasad".

I've followed Matt Easton for a few years and he is a really knowledgeable guy. Lots of interesting stuff on his channel. I had the opportunity to join his annual event - Fight Camp in the UK -a few years ago and they had some really interesting sessions on saber ( which I did for years as well as small sword and rapier) and a fair bit medieval sword classes at the time. Lots of fun. Mike you have to join HEMA. You would love it.

I got a Windlass D-Guard Confederate Bowie. I put a real edge on it, including sharpening the back false edge. I polished up the guard and pommel. I leather wrapped the handle. I got a working frog for the scabbard. It hangs next to my bed, and if need be will serve it's intended purpose. If someone breaks into my house, well... Like Willie Nelson said in The Highwayman "Sword and Pistol by my side"

I don't own any swords but I do see they can be a thing of beauty. I'm a history buff and the Viking age is one of my favorite studies. All the years from the fall of Rome up until the American Revolution, which is many years I know, fascinates me.

I'm not really a gun guy but I am a sword guy. I stumbled across your video while looking for something else to watch but thought I'd give it a shot... Glad I did! Personally I feel that any sword made in the modern era could fall into the category of sword like object even albion's because let's face it none of them will ever be used in a Viking battle or a medieval battle. As such they are all replicas. It's very unlikely that someone is going to get in a swordfight these days, unless they happen to grab a sword for self-defense against somebody who has a knife, machete or baseball bat. That being said in addition to the fact you mention how many people can't afford to spend a thousand something dollars... Well to me a modern sword is still a sword we just must keep in mind some of them aren't going to be completely historically accurate summer going to be fantasy but it's about what you like, what you can afford and if what you purchase does the tasks asked. The windlass battlecry line never tried to say they were completely historically accurate what they did say was that they are an entry to mid-level functional weapon. They aren't meant to compete with Albion they're meant to give people who can't afford and Albion a good working sword which I feel they do. I've owned the battle-cry Bosworth longsword for several years now and put it through some good cutting tests (bottles, bamboo, etc.)...it's held up fine.

I have over the past 4 or 5 months been slowly ( do to being retired & poor) putting a dark age trekking kit together (8-9th century Saxon from Wessex ) I’ll be picking up a Grimsfrost long Seax/ sword. Already have there #lV seax knife . I’ve always liked & have had windless blades & you are right there a grate bang for the buck ! Welcome to the dark ages ! PS: I have an undoing of my seax , check it out? You may like the knife !

Great Video Mike. Good point about sword snobs. I have custom Mike “Tinker” Pearce weapons and Windless swords. Just like with Peacemakers. There are people who say genuine Colt or nothing. Don’t get me wrong Colts and Standard Manufacturing peacemakers are beautifully made and are investment grade, but they won’t perform any better than a Uberti or Pietta (Talking about “traditional” old west firearms.) and will cost you a fraction of what a Colt will.

Albion does stock removal using CNC's machines. Not forging to shape.

As for your description of the reenactor snobs you are dead on I have been doing Native American reenactments for 12 years and we have three groups the guys who come out to have fun and are not always period Correct, the period correct guys ( I am in this group) and the Hollywood Indians which are the snobs keep up the good work .
