Turn up the volume!! We've waited three years to get a good video of a kiwi calling so turn it up loud and enjoy. There's something very special about being in the dark, silent bush and hearing the plaintive call of the male kiwi hoping for a reply from his mate.

Yes we have got to know 'Tumeke' a little over the past few years. He is our star Kiwi Dad. He is sitting on his first egg for the season so it might be a great Kiwi chick year.

It took a few years to get him standing in the middle of the frame and calling. We had a few "near misses", with him just out of sight, so we're thrilled with this!

Ive used this call to give my local lad a surprise.. he showed up the next night and made his presence felt with a loud call and a few grunts.. he has a mate and her call is different again.. i hear them most carm nights.. and a few more up the valley.. beautiful flightless birds that im blessed to have walking on my back lawn.... Kawau island 🏝

The second call, we think, was him replying to his mate. It's a descending call not ascending call, which we often hear when the female has called first (which doesn't usually happen).

Wow, where do you live? If you are in Northland, the Coromandel, rural Taranaki, Rakiura/Stewart Island it could be kiwi. Or it could be a ruru/morepork. They have lots of calls and some can sound like a kiwi. Ruru are cool too.

As a kiwi on foreign soil, it always makes me so happy to hear bird calls from back home. Also, the dog I’m watching cocked his head to the side when the mating call started. His look said “that’s not an American bird”
