The anxiety is normal, I’m sure we’ll all experience it. I know I did. It gets better, the confidence will arrive as you continue to make headway. One class at a time, you got this!

The emotional burnout thing is real, felt this a lot when working in a mental hospital, couldn't do it again after a year, very emotionally draining😢

Sorry to hear that. It’s relatable, I felt this a lot working in the county jail system, that I got use to it. I like to make the point that nursing isn’t just in one area, you can explore others.

Appreciate you making this video bro! I’m on pace to graduate nursing school next month and I’ve been given the same advice you shared in this video. I don’t really wanna work bedside at the hospital and more interested in doing psych. This vid just made me a lil more confident to do what I actually wanna do. Thanks for making the video 🙏🏽

I’m glad! I can relate to you. I felt a video like this would have helped me a few years ago. Things will turn out just fine. People act like we’re not a nurse because we don’t like the hospital or bedside. Funny thing is, many spend their latter careers trying to escape it anyway.

I've been a nurse for 13 yrs and have never worked in a hospital. I went from psych, mostly case management, then insurance companies, now Health information management/ clinical documentation integrity. I feel exactly like you feel. I feel like a nurse renegade.

You and I both lol. I feel that! Looking at my career path, it will likely look similar to yours! 13yrs in now, in your career, do you ever see yourself needing to work in a hospital on the floor?

@@MaleNurseMentor No, and in fact I hated clinicals. I hated every early morning reporting to the nurse's station in uniform with a care plan and medication cards in hand. I do love being a nurse, but I hate the exploitation. Yet, of all members of healthcare professionals, we have the most flexibility to move to different specialties and enhance our impact within the healthcare system through joining committees, organizations, certifications and collaboration with non-clinical professionals. My end goal is program management, and then entrepreneurship.

@@MaleNurseMentor I've also never worked at a nursing home. I've worked inpatient psych for a couple yrs and even home care for a short period of time.

Your story and mindset is very similar to me! I wanted to ask, as others may see your answer as helpful also. We are out here, many like you and I. We can be a nurse in many very unconventional roles. Also build an entire career out of it and be just fine. I agree with you! Hopefully the message continues to get across, as we need more nurses across the entire healthcare system, not just hospitals.

Thanks Mark! I work in California, at one of the many state prisons. It really depends where you work. I've done it all. There is a outpatient clinic, there is a mini ER, they have an inpatient infirmary. They also have case management and appeals. Your day to day depends which area you are assigned to.

Thank you for your insight on correctional nursing. Quick question, While working at the county hospital, what department did you work in? What was your title?
@MaleNurseMentor
@MaleNurseMentor 8 ай бұрын
For sure! Not fully sure if you meant county jail (where I worked) or community hospital where I did my rotations. But in county jail I worked everywhere, clinic line and intakes. At the hospital I actually worked on a general med-surg unit. I actually worked on both day shift and night. Fun fact- I was the only student to do their preceptorship on nights lol.

@@MaleNurseMentorSorry about that I meant county jail😅. Additionally, I was actually wondering if preceptorships could be done at nights. Thanks for the that fun fact, and for replying with such a detailed answer. I think it would be a good idea to make more videos about your time in county jail, if you have more stories/unique insights to share. I thoroughly enjoyed the one you did about your first day, lol.
@MaleNurseMentor

No worries, I imagined that is what you meant. They didn't openly say preceptorships were available at night. I made the suggestion and asked to do it at night. It's a lot more chill at night and an easier way to gain confidence. Also most new grads do start on night shift so it helps get insight for what it'd be like. - Also, I have so many stories from county jail lol maybe l'll make one my next story or a future story. I plan to make Storytime videos here and there. I'm glad you enjoyed it. It really happened haha

What's up Jesse. I got accepted into Nursing school, one of the accelerated, 15 month programs. Pretty nervous about it, taking out loans and everything for school. Never worked in health care. Is it worth it? How is the pay? Work/life balance? The job itself, especially never working in Healthcare? Thank you!
@MaleNurseMentor
@MaleNurseMentor 6 ай бұрын
I say it’s worth it. For one, it’s a solid career, you always have a job, two there are many areas to work at, and three it helps provide a stable source of income. Be careful to pay off loans once you start working instead of buying any nice “toys”. When I got into the nursing program, my healthcare experience was limited, and many didn’t have any at all. That doesn’t matter much honestly, they walk you from the start, that’s what semester 1 is for. You got this! As far as work life balance, nursing helps, but be patient with yourself, school is tough to balance. Also your first year or two is hard to balance as you settle into the work force. Find a personal development program when you stabilize a bit and start to work on the person you want to be. It’s all a step by step process. Goodluck, I’m here or on insta if you have any questions or need motivation!

While in the field, what do you do to keep your skills sharpen? Plus the skills you don't use on a daily basis, is it still wise to be familiar with them?
@MaleNurseMentor
@MaleNurseMentor 7 ай бұрын
Great question! To be honest, as a nurse the skills are endless. What you'll see is...that to stay up 100% on all skills is not feasible. You just need to understand them. What matters most is being fresh on the skills you need for your active RN role. For example, if you work Med-Surg it's important to be good on NG tubes or JP drains etc... If your a psych nurse you need to stay sharp on soft skills like de-escalation techniques or active listening. I realized this over time about the field. It's too much pressure to tell oneself you need to stay up to date on all skills. There is just no way. My honest opinion.

I’m glad you clarified and gave me an honest explanation. I always have that question in the back of my mind while I’m my clinicals class, when they tell us that we need to know our skills! But, that makes sense to stay abreast of skills dealing with the speciality we are a part of. Thank you! Your channel is a great motivator man!
