I am currently in nursing school gonna be graduating in May! I’ve worked as a waiter for the last 5 years during school and in clinicals while some nurses are annoyed I feel right at home, these things in my opinion can help a patient feel cared for and attended to although I could see it being a hastle at times. While I don’t have much healthcare experience besides clinicals some skills from serving I have noticed do transfer over, kindness and professional communication even during confrontation being the two main ones.

Love you sharing your experience!. I think where most nurses get annoyed eventually is from the standpoint that they are in the business of healthcare not retail or customer service. But often times they overlap, and sometimes our job can feel more customer service based in moments rather than patient outcome based.

And yes those skills do seem to transfer over well as you mentioned.

I used to be a waiter and I'm currently in nursing school. Being a nurse entails showing hospitality, compassion and customer service. You're caring for people who can't do much for themselves. If you're not willing to care for people or willing to show hospitality then nursing is not for you.

A nurse needs to be a professional and be caring, compassionate, and empathetic to another humans needs. I personally don’t feel customer service should be so heavily included in our role as much as it is. We should base our practice on patient outcomes more-so than how patients felt after their stay with their assigned RNs. Yes patients are very vulnerable under our stay, but as long as a nurse stays professional and compassionate and attuned to a patients needs, I feel that is enough. We work in healthcare, not retail and not the restaurant industry. But also - not every patient makes us feel this way, but it is a reality of nursing in general. It’s a reason many nurses eventually burnout and it’s unfortunate.

@@MaleNurseMentor I was just speaking in a general sense but I agree that the workload and nurse to patient ratio here in America is unfair. I know some nurses who said they have to take out the trash because the workload for housekeeping is too much. That's very wrong and nurses shouldn't also have to take out trash in addition to doing so much already. Thanks for your insight.

Oh wow, that’s a lot. Not fair in my opinion also.

I find such comments to be absolutely disgusting until the same people making them end up in nursing homes well into advanced age. The world works in funny ways dishing it back when they become dependent on those same nurses and end up with subpar care and treatment at their own expense.

I personally don’t, I find them helpful to understand what actually happens in the nursing workforce. I can understand the level of compassion and empathy required to be a good nurse, but somethings do cross the line as far as expectations placed on nurses to perform that we shouldn’t have to.
