Күн бұрын

Hi everyone, thanks for stopping by, hunting season is here and things tends to get busier than normal... however I'll do my best to keep uploading these videos.For today I have an old one that was hiding in my computer. It was a sub adult moulting Pintail X mallard hybrid, that was a little challenge to make it look good. It was so special to its owner and also myself , so I did my best. I hope you enjoy the show.
Cheers

Your flight feathers are always so beautiful, we have an snowy owl at my school the was never preened properly so its flights are all scraggly.

Crazy looking hybrid! Mount came out awesome Ben, Was it harvested near you?
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 2 жыл бұрын
If it was an older bird or at least in spring plumage it would have been much prettier and more vibrant. But I guess we get what we get. Yes it was harvested in Alberta.

Beautiful i wanted to ask if you do use borax and how to properly clean the bird from borax?
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 2 жыл бұрын
you can use borax or soak the bird in the solution,, look up my video about how to deal with bugs and preservation.. it is on my channel, under tips playlist.

So would you use a mallard skull and mold/form or would you use a pintails
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 2 жыл бұрын
It’s original beak was almost identical to mallard. So I used a mallard but painted it like pintail.

I typically use a little caulking inside the head area, do you ever have issues with the skin drying and "tweaking" the feathers there since I don't think you use any... ? Thank you, another great video!
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 2 жыл бұрын
I actually use caulking too, this video is one of my earlier videos that I just uploaded,, in those days I didnt film every step... if you watch my new videos, you will see me caulking. cheers

@@ArtofTaxidermy Ahhh, yes! Its something I've done only the last couple years myself but I was hoping you were going to have a trick so I wouldn't have to haha It gets a little messy at times for me... Thanks again, I really enjoy your content, talents and inspiration to be a better taxidermist!
@ArtofTaxidermy

@@KKing-rf4ix the reality is that you peel the skin off the body when you skin, so you gonna have to somehow glue it back to the body.. if you leave it loose it will shift on it. cheers

Hey buddy I need help I have the body spot on but how do you mount the skin on the head with ripping feathers because there so fragile am I using to much clay or to thick if a neck I just don’t know or is there a way to pull that skin to up to the beak also what’s the correct way to measure a neck
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy Жыл бұрын
How are you trying to pull the skin over the skull ? Did you invert the neck ? Are you using artificial skull ?
@justinbeavers9484
@justinbeavers9484 Жыл бұрын
@@ArtofTaxidermy I didn’t do a relief cut I just put the clay on a artificial head and tried pulling with my fingers as first but it was really hard and a really tight fit abd feathers were falling off everywhere and I’m starting to wonder if the bird was pin feathered
@justinbeavers9484
@justinbeavers9484 Жыл бұрын
@@ArtofTaxidermy yes I used a artificial head and the skin was so tight around the top of the head it was hard to pull it to the v shapes on the beak should I make a relief cut or do the head first before I wire the body
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy Жыл бұрын
@@justinbeavers9484 some waterfowl heads can get very tight.. you have to develop some techniques to pull the skin over the head.. however, if you rip some corners of the skin while pulling, it is not a big deal, it has happened to me on Teals.. I just sew them back up. make sure not to put too much clay on the skull either.

@@ArtofTaxidermy Thankyou one more question why to do think my wood ducks face feather were just randomly falling out like you can blow on them and they would come out or if you barley touch it is is because of my washing process or because the drying

What size wire do you use for the wings, neck, etc
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 2 жыл бұрын
If I remember right it was 16 for neck and probably 14 for wings. And legs. I choose different wire sizes based on the pose I choose. So it’s not the same all the time.
