Malleable cast iron is a heat-treated iron-carbon alloy, which solidifies in the as-cast condition with a graphite-free structure, i.e. the total carbon content is present in the cementite form (Fe3C). Two groups of malleable cast iron are specified (whiteheart and blackheart malleable cast iron), differentiated by chemical composition, temperature and time cycles of the annealing process, the annealing atmosphere and the properties and microstructure resulting therefrom.

What is the difference between a steel coupling vs malleable iron? My personal preference is for malleable iron, but we have a hard time getting them and have to use the thin steel couplings that come on our pipe. We mostly use galvanized 3/4" and 1/2" pipe and fittings for propane plumbing applications. What I'm wondering, is there an advantage to either? The maximum pressure the pipe will see is 20 psi, with 0.5 the normal. This plumbing is used in houses and attics and under houses in crawl spaces. Thanks.

THOSE ARE NOT COUPLINGS ON YA DELIVERED PIPE..THEY ARE JUST USED TO PROTECT THE THREADS

@@kharismoke6239 Actually, they are couplings, as delivered on domestic pipe. Same size, thickness, and quality of thread as ones we buy. The plastic thread protector is on the other end, only one coupling per stick.

It is used when you have 2 pipes (coaxial) to connect but unable to turn them (as it would unscrew at the other ends.) You screw each side them thighten the "middle" nut to make it tight, search youtube for : Union pipe

We use galvanized malleable iron fittings all the time for propane systems.

You did good until you got to what you said was as '"coupling", That's when you pissed me off! What you said was a coupling was a coupling, BUT it was not just a coupling, it was in fact a "reduced" coupling! You messed up big time in your lack of hands on skills. All you are is a narrator, not a craftsman! BEEEEEEEP! EEEHHHANNNNTTTT! You screwed up!
