Edward's Steam Boat Whippet Boat Maiden Voyage

Edward's Steam Boat Whippet is working after 20+ years of building.
A few technical issues but nothing major. Usual problems with setting the safety valve, injector not working and the odd leaks are to be expected and all but 1 problem was sorted before its maiden voyage out into the open lake.
Edward now looks forward to many years happy boating.

Absolutely brilliant! A beauty to boot! This reminds me of an article in an old mother earth news magazine, I think late 1970s or early 1980s where I guy showed how you could convert an inline-four-cylinder car engine to run as a steam engine. Anyway, thank you for sharing this with us and happy boating!

Congratulations! What an achievement and (although it's a real cliché) you've got 'poetry in motion' there! Although you know differently (because of the work involved in making the vessel) it seems such a relaxing form of propulsion....indeed it seems effortless. Many thanks for sharing the first trial and the Cumbrian weather too. Rob.

@maltelec
@maltelec 10 жыл бұрын
SnyderColorcast In order to get 470HP with 470ft.lb torque the engine needs to rev at 5300 rpm. Knowing what American engines are like, it will last around 5 minutes doing that. The engine in the boat above should still be running fine in 100+ years time, as has been proven by similar engines which are 100+ years old.

modelleg and Thelastminstrel Thelastminstrel was saying that this coal firing set up is much harder than turning a key on an infernal combustion engine. However everyone forgets that the first petrol cars were as bad if not worse than steam powered versions for breaking down and being generally unreliable. If steam propulsion had as much money thrown at research as petrol and diesel has had, it would be just as good (if not better) then Petrol and Diesel cars are today. The energy value of coal is not much less than gasoline (Petrol). The difference is the boiler adds much weight. This can be changed but like the IC engine, not easy to get right. Fuel Energy Density Coal: 24 MJoules/kg. Gas: 46 MJoules/kg. Uranium: 76,000,000 MJoules/kg *Figures taken from xkcd's Log Scale

The shipping companies moved to IC on a cost basis. Efficiency has little to do with economy, it just sometimes follows the same path. Other times it doesn't.
